FFS are you telling me that the Premier is the same standard as the Champions league? ? Look the premier league as lost its way over the last 4 or 5 years. Was Hazard the best player? wow i thought he had an ok season with Chelsea. The Premier could comeback but at the moment its lost. Homegrown scene is not happening. The glitter has well and truly gone How on earth are you looking at this?! You're saying FC BATE, APOEL and Maribor would hold their own in the Premier League? On top of that, the Premier League have teams that compete with the Champions League's elite. And this STILL doesn't tie in with the nonsensical comments before. Would Sunderland hold their own in the cl? The English sides who qualified couldn't, so why would they be able to? If you are really trying to say that the prem is better than the cl, then I don't know what you're thinking. That is madness.

'Holding your own' is not equal to winning the tournament. Sunderland would not be the weakest team at the tournament, therefore they're good enough to be there. The final stages of the Champions League is of a very high standard, but the tournament is not really a 'cream of the crop' competition as the allocations are split between nations, some of which are weaker than others. Some teams in the Europa League are stronger than teams in the CL, and there are always teams from England, Spain, Italy, Germany or France not playing in Europe who are stronger than some of the smaller teams in the CL group stage. This isn't a problem, that's just the point I'm making. It's not about Barcelona, Chelsea, the final or the top of the table is it, the standard of a tournament is limited by its weakest teams.

I think it is very fair to assume those who make it to the CL proper would be good enough to hold their own in any of those leagues. Let's not forget apoel got to the knock out stages, something liverpool couldn't do this year.

Couldn't see that this had been raised since the Belgium v France game so apologies if I'm repeating what's already been said, but I think we might really miss Ginge on Friday.
I haven't seen the Belgium v France highlights, but by the sound of it they took a leaf out of Man Utd's book and used Fellaini as a target man to create havoc and it seemed to work! Much as he isn't everyone's cup of tea, and Ash and Chester are solid defenders, I think a back 3 with Collins essentially man-marking Fellaini would drastically reduce his effectiveness in the air.
Obviously I haven't factored in the potential for a trademark red card or missed sitter, but on paper Collins seems made to play against Fellaini.

Completely agree! I didn't watch the France-Belgium game but as soon as I saw that Fellaini had scored twice I immediately thought how we'd miss Collins.

I'm inclined to agree.
On the subject of dealing with target men, I think the way Arsenal dealed with Benteke in the FA Cup final was excellent - they more or less had the goalkeeper man mark him when a cross seemed likely. It worked a treat - lateral thinking, and getting the man with the biggest advantage (allowed to use his hands) to deal with the biggest threat. If it looked as though a cross was coming in, Szczesny sprinted towards Benteke, presumably with a defender or two dropping on the line to cover. Fantastic tactical play I thought, and Szczesny deterred Benteke on a few occasions this way.
Now I think of it, that's the most logical way of dealing with an aerial threat on the box. It might be unconventional, and all the keeper may be able to to do is punch or flap - therefore infuriating any old-school purists who are unable to think progressively - but if it prevents the target man getting his header in it's job done.

I like your thinking, but watching Belgium v France, Belgium were very, very fluid in midfield with numbers coming quickly into box. I can see our keeper sprinting out, failing to catch it and then punching it to the feet of Hazard :-(

Joe Ledley and Andy King are about 6 foot tall, Vokes 6'1, HRK 6', Bale 6'... it might be worth starting these players to deal with Belgium's height and physicality.
I'm a bit worried that Joe Allen didn't play that much football towards the end of the season, lets hope he's on top of his game and doesn't stop running! We need our midfield to be on top of it especially as Belgium have Nainggolan available this time (he looked class against France)

www.cardiffcityforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=159097Seen this being discussed on Cardiff's forum. They say that in an interview with Talksport Collins said that he has a "quite tight" calf but didn't want to risk playing for Wales just in case he wouldn't be fit for West Ham's preseason. Did anybody else happen to hear this interview? Is that what he really said? There's a pic of him on Andy Carroll's Twitter today training with him which suggests he's doing recovery work.

I'm glad that James Collins is still a part of the squad, and it's credit to him that he's accepted a subordinate role, but one incident last night demonstrated yet again why he can't be fully trusted. You all know what I'm referring to - that incident where he was caught in possession late on, where an unkind bouce of the ball would have presented an easy goal to the Moldovans. Its such a shame, because Collins has many good qualities, but these sort of incidents happen more often with him than any other Welsh defender.
There will be times in the campaign when we need to call on Collins' services, and there's every chance he will perform well. But personally, I'm glad we now have enough quality in depth that we don't need him in the first XI on a regular basis.

I was thinking looking at Ash and the fact he is retiring after this campaign and given some rest on 80 minutes who will take over that role? We need to be thinking about it now - not just the organisation/leadership but the ability to move the ball around from the back with the fluency that Ash does. With the other defensive personnel the age is not an issue or the cover coming through.....overto you Regan Poole, Jordan Williams et al.

I think Lockyer is more ready than Jordan Williams or Poole but in truth we'd probably see Gunter move to cb ahead of an untried player.
Collins is at least playing for his club which is more than a lot of players are doing.
Collins was a bit lax in that one incident but I thought he should have come on earlier only by 5-10 minutes but give him a longer run out. I have some sympathy with him as he is getting half an hour here, 10 minites there. Plus he's better in a flat back four rather than a 3

He is still adapting to League one and is some way off even being a squad player, when we have the likes of Dummett available. Chester and Davies should be around for a while yet but with Collins and Williams both likely to retire after the world cup that 3rd centre back position could be a problem in the medium term.

50 caps last night puts him into an elite bracket of some 30+ Welsh legends.
Too much is made of his 'liability'. Our other defenders make plenty of errors, just that they get forgiven, or not commented on. But ever since Collins' red card against Belgium, his every mistake gets jumped on.
And in your case Alarch, I'm afraid in the past you've even tried to plant other defenders' errors on Collins' shoulders (Davies letting Robben cut inside him to score I'm thinking of).
Anyone hear Collins interviewed on Radio Wales last night? Totally committed despite his supporting role, a top-class defender with tonnes of experience playing regularly in the premiership. We're lucky to have him.

I'd take your word for it re Lockyer. I meant he's more ready in comparison with our other youngsters, obviously Dummett is ahead of him, though as the last two years have proven Coleman will opt for Gunter ahead of Dummett if he has to. We've actually been lucky with suspensions and injuries among our defenders so we haven't been really stretched (Belgium away in 2013 the only exception). But history tells us that Coleman isn't going to go with rookies at cb - he's shown that he'd prefer to recall older players (Gabbidon) or convert full backs (Davies and Gunter obviously but also Ricketts. He dallied with Joel Lynch but that ship has sailed. And he has called up Joe Walsh as a late replacement but I can't help think that was just to make up the numbers in training. Outside of the first choice 4 plus Gunter we have not the faintest idea what we have. I deliberately omit Dummett - anyone really know what he offers us?

Whilst others make mistakes none are as blatantly brainless and suicidal as the ones that Collins makes- hence why he has gained a reputation amongst some for being a bit of a liability. Yes good to see he made it to 50 caps eventually, he could have had many more by now like Bale and Gunter but for whatever reason hasn't.

Dummett is an odd one- never really given much opportunity because our core defenders are generally a fit bunch and pick themselves when fit. He seems the most likely to come in if things stay as they are when Williams and Collins depart. I would hope that if this continues to be the case Dummett gets more of an opportunity to ease himself into the squad. Given Coleman's preference for favourites I hope he doesn't bugger off after this campaign leaving us with a glaring hole in the centre of defence. Gunter could play there at a push but is that an ideal long term solution?

And here I was thinking I was being generous to Collins - I've clearly touched a nerve here...
Every player makes mistakes, but Collins makes more brainless ones than most. That doesn't make him a bad player, at his best he's excellent, but it doesn't change the fact that he's unreliable. He may well come in at some point during the campaign and put in a MOTM performance - but could just as easily give away a stupid goal. I can't think of any other player in the Welsh squad where such a range of possibilities applies.
The fact that Collins came off the bench, in spite of the fact that he's played more games this season suggests that perhaps the Welsh management team sees things in a similar way to the way I see it.
