This has been a common problem - the senior players deciding not to sit on bench - we need experience on the bench for when the inevitable injuries / suspensions occur. There's a fair chance both of the Collins would have taken the field versus Bulgaria. We need strength in depth.

This is where Speed's man management skills are tested.
He should try to talk Collins through this.
However, Speed should just have one shot at this and if Collins doesn't come around then forget him.
He can go on the 'fuck off' pile with Koumas and Giggs.
Frankly speaking, there's a good reason why he aint first choice.

Its interesting how many of today's professionals who aren't first choice for their clubs often appear in the press stating how committed they are and how they'll "knuckle down in training and show the gaffer they're worthy of a first team spot". But when it come's to their national side they're not prepared to do the same thing. Just shows that people like Earnie are a rare breed in this day and age.
Of course this may all be bullcrap as the only evidence is Iwan Roberts's comments, whether he knows something on the inside or not I don't know. Until Collins comes out and actually says he's considering it I'll treat this one with a pinch of salt.

Lets hope that this is not true, I'd like to believe that Collins is mature enough to know that he's needed around the set up for his Premier League experience and his presence, but in all honesty IF is true then he can kindly can fuck off. It's not dawned on him perhaps that him playing alongside Ashley Williams was simply, not functioning properly. IMHO each occasion they played alongside each other, always 1 of them looked likely to make a mistake and never looked comfortable.

The article reads a lot like speculation. Still, feel strongly that Speed needs to be asked about this at the next press conference.

Maybe Im jumping the gun here, but if he retires after being dropped once at the age of 28 and also being a recent captain he's a total disgrace!

It's amazing that we have 4 centre backs (or players who can play centre back) out at the moment- Gabbidon and Ricketts (legitamatey) and the 2 Collins boys (questionably). What happens if Ash Williams gets a yellow card vs the Swiss? we'll be going to bulgaria with only 2 fit CBs- both in the championship, both in their early 20's. Not exactly ideal.
I'm disappointed with James Collins for missing these games. But then, he's been disappointing me for years now....

"Speed needs to be asked about this at the next press conference." He must duck questions on this matter and deal with it privately. A JC-Blake combination might work and may be needed.

Disagree: he should have already dealt with it privately and be ready to give a clear answer by the time of the press conference.

I can't see that the BBC have got any proof of this. Too many of our players have done this in the past though, so I can understand why a story like this is being reported. However I'm sure he'd withdraw for "personal reasons" rather than giving the story of a knee injury if it was false. Whatever anybody here says, we NEED James Collins.

No evidence that Collins is seriously thinking of quitting. We don't know why he has pulled out; he is injured apprently. That is possible even though he play 90 minutes for his club the other day. Sometimes injuries, particularly hamstring injuries, do not reveal themselves in full extent until after the match. Collins has always been one of our most enthusiastic players and has turned up in the past for away trips to places like Cyprus when players like Koumas couldn't be bothered to travel away.
If he is seriously thinking of quitting, it would be a massive overreaction. JC is still probably our best centre-half on paper, but it is right that the manager picks players on current form. Blake did well whilst Collins was out against Montenegro and England - you can't take his place away from him. However I still don't think Blake is quite ready to step up and be part of our 1st choice centre-back pairing permanently. Collins will definitely get back in the team in the future, no doubt about that, as Williams occasionally has bad games too and no-one is entrenched in the side of our four main centre-backs. So it would be ridiculous for him to quit (not to mention he's 28 and has at least 5-6 years of international football ahead of him yet). And I don't think he will quit for one second.

How would that help team performance, which is the only thing that matters? Least said soonest mended, and the noseyness of hacks and supporters should not be appeased.

JC is still probably our best centre-half on paper. That's half the problem with JC... he's always been our best CB on PAPER! Big prospect when he was at Cardiff and high-profile moves to Premier League clubs. But Ash Williams has comparatively come from nowhere and sealed his spot in our first 11 ahead of him. For me the two most memorable moments of JC's international career so far are his slip against Northern Ireland early in his career and giving away the penalty against England earlier this year. Yes, fair play, he may have had some great games in between all that, but I can't think of any that come ahead of that (certainly nothing as memorable as some of Gabbidon's early games for Wales). It goes to show he still has a lot to prove for Wales and with him now being a senior member of our squad he should be showing the character to step up to the plate rather than talking of quitting and pulling out of squads.

Lol we need james collins surely your on a wind up mate Do you really think we can toss James Collins to one side? We are hardly blessed with an abundance of centre backs, and if we lost James Collins we'd be replacing a mid-table premier league player with a low end Championship defender. We need to keep Williams and Blake as our current pairing, that goes without saying, but without Collins on the bench we'll be bringing on Nyatanga instead. I'd rather Collins. Collins' experience is another attribute, although I have to admit I thought he had more caps then he actually has. He plays week in, week out in the Premiership and gets good reviews. If we could find a Welsh Richard Dunne then we'd have our pairing sorted.

He's not talked of quitting, its just paper talk at the moment so lets wait and see before making any judgement.

although I have to admit I thought he had more caps then he actually has. He missed about 10 internationals when he did his cruciate ligament and didn't get capped until relatively late (by recent standards) and when he did Gabbidon, Page and Melville were ahead of him in the pecking order. Also for a spell he wasn't a first choice at West Ham. All in all though, you're right, 39 caps is a poor return for a 28 centre back whatever the reasons

I still think of Joe being about 21 though!

Ledley is 24 and has more caps (40). Gunter (age 22, caps 31) Bale (22, 30) and even Nyatanga (23, 34) are catching up with Collins!
Memorable Collins games for Wales (in a good way) Czech Republic at home 0-0 (Giggs last game) and two away games in Germany (0-0 and 0-1) Apart from those though its mainly bad memeories sadly...

He's the sort of player that is always prone to a major error, and because of that we always remember the blunders, and not the good games. I remember that English fan who posted on here around the time of the Mill Stad game saying how well he thought Collins had done - winning everything in the air etc - but the only point we'll mention is his clumsy foul for the penalty. I suppose thats the life the back 5 have, although saying that I wonder how Earnshaw will be remembered after that miss at Wembley!

Its interesting that he usually plays well for Villa and their fans love him and usually plays badly for Wales and we all er..question whether he should be in the side.
with Blake it seems to be the opposite. Cardiff fans don't seem at all convinced by him, but all of us on here think he was superb in the last two games and deserves to keep his place.
I wonder if this shows the difference between English/ British football and internationals? Even though there are lots of top strikers from all over the world in the prem, I feel like its still more direct football than internationals and possession isn't treasured as much. there's still quite a lot of high balls going into the box, which Collins deals with well. He's less comfortable with clever, quicker strikers like Vucinic. If you watch Villa, you'll often see Collins just boot the ball long down field into an area of the pitch too, which is obviously different to the style Speed wants to develop.

Olive branch, ego massage, words of comfort for Collins Fair do's to Speed. He's explained his case well here. Collins should have no complaints. If indeed there were any in the first place. news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/15160529.stm
