In the last week we've had 5 full backs playing at the top level: Matthews (Celtic), Henley (Blackburn), Ricketts (Bolton) Taylor and Richards (Swansea). And championship Chris Gunter is still our first choice right back for me.
It's a massively encouraging level of strength in depth, and a situation we really could have done with when Mark Hughes was in charge and Mark Delaney was our only top class natural full back.
If I was Chris Gunter, I'd be worried about losing my international place and be looking to get into the EPL this January. I know Fulham, Norwich and Blackburn are interested, but for 2.5 million could bigger teams who desperately need full backs at the moment- namely Arsenal and Sunderland- take a punt on the Gunt?

Don't think we need t be worrying about these lads, they have both been playing for Wales since they were schoolboys with Joniesta's dad from Bangor he will never play for England

On that podcast, the English guy says he should choose the USA because of the exotic travel, but that sounds like bullshit to me. Generally you're only stuck in hotels anyway. If he wants to travel he can do that when he's retired.
The American says he should choose Wales for the chance to play with Bale and Ramsey. He sounded much more sensible.

Blackburn will be hoping he chooses Wales over the US on the grounds that the furthest he will have to travel is Azerbaijan, Armenia or Israel, rather than Panama, Trinidad or LA. We shouldn't be slack and he should be courted, involved and kept in touch with at all times. We shouldn't however cap him for the sake of it. That cheapens and demeans the cap

It's what I liked about the Jon Williams situation - they got him involved in the squad but didn't play him for the sake of it. Clearly, if they had felt he was ready, he would have played. In the long run, this is far better treatment of a player. Players that jump ship to another country aren't the kind of players that a small country like us needs.

I don't understand how anyone could react negatively to that; he seems quite a sensible lad. Not disrespectful to anyone, says he's hopeful of a call from Coleman, but obviously unable to commit at this stage. All sounds fair enough really. Hopefully he gets that call for Costa Rica.

I saw the interview - I think he was conscious that he didn't want to annoy the US. I mean, he may not be good enough for us, but could fit into their plans. Who knows.
I would like to see him called up though. At that point, indecision would be unacceptable.

yes but Henley has been playing for Wales since schoolboys level unlike that Williams Yes that's why it concerns me more that he has not committed to Wales yet. It feels like he's saying I'll get some international experience then see if England or USA pick me.

You may feel he's saying that, but he said nothing of the sort. He said he hopes Coleman gives him the call; you can't really expect him to say more right now!

I remember looking at his Twitter - loads of Wales related tweets, he seemed very much into the whole thing. Not much to worry about here - he probably deserves a call up, if not Costa Rica then certainly Mexico.

I would like to see him called up though. At that point, indecision would be unacceptable. Klinsmann is using the throw enough shit at the wall and see what sticks technique of managing the yanks. He's got more chance of playing in a world cup for them than he has with us. If he doesn't want to commit to Wales then I don't think we should continue calling him up to our youth teams. This is exactly the kind of thing that Lauren Blanc was banging on about when he wanted a race quota introduced to French football. They spend all that time and money developing players only for them to go and play for another country. The only problem with this attitude though is that playing for our youth teams might make it so that he wants to play for us at senior level. One question that could settle it is this. Assuming we've got our next game under control, would his 6 games (only 2 full) for Blackburn make him a more worthy candidate for a substitute appearance than one of our U21s?

Assuming we've got our next game under control, would his 6 games (only 2 full) for Blackburn make him a more worthy candidate for a substitute appearance than one of our U21s? Interesting points. One thing I would say, I think that we've had maybe three defections in living memory (perhaps there are one or two more that I am forgetting), whereas France have had a shedload of pretty high profile players ditching them - though this isn't to say that all of them would have been first choice French players by any stretch (although I guess that isn't entirely the point.) I think that Henley is probably worth a call to the squad at least - it's not as if we have to give him the full 90 minutes or anything - just get him involved, like we did with Jon Williams, and make him feel part of things. Gunter plays for a dire Forest team in the english championship...Henley is a squad member for a poor, but battling, epl side. It's worth looking at.
