I'm pretty sure Mark Hughes played a game for Bayern Munich later that day. Mad. Legend. That was back in the days when players gave a fuck. No disrespect meant, but as much as Bale loves Wales could you see him playing an international on the same day as a Real Madrid game....or maybe that's comparing apples to oranges as in the current era the number of games in a season would be the main reason to stop a player playing two games, compared to Hughes who have played a much lesser number making two games in a day more palatable.

Ratcliffe: "I can't believe that tonight. A lot of questions are going to be asked"
Thank god someones willing to jump off the fence.

Good on rats but wish the rest of them had the balls to criticise. That's an amateur side ffs . The players bar bale should be saying they weren't good enough tonight too. They should be banned from talking themselves up before games an do they're talking on the pitch.

I am quite amused and bemused at the above. So many Welsh fans would complain when Toshack the pundit was critical in a way that noone else was.
But interested to hear more about last night. I could not hear the comments at Half Time where I was but got the impression:
Sky are taking Wales more seriously this time; The coverage started 45 mins before Kick Off rather than 15 mins;
How long was it on for after the final whistle? Was there much in the way of interviews etc?

The programme finished at 10.30 but that included highlights of the Cyprus and Bosnia game as well. Bale and Coleman both got interviewed, both saying more or less the same thing i.e the state of the pitch, how it was all about the 3 points etc..

The punditry was so bad it was untrue, completely lacking in analytical insight, or a willingness to criticise in the slightest manner. Good of Rats to say that "questions need to be asked" - but what questions did he ask then? Try these for size:
Why did we go for a 3-5-2 formation when only Chester plays regularly at club level with wing backs? Why did we go for a 3-5-2 formation when we haven't played with that formation in recent times - not even in friendlies? Why didn't we have more friendlies pre-World Cup and the previous week to experiment with new formations? Why didn't we revert to 4 at the back at half-time when it was clear that 5 at the back wasn't working? Why didn't we revert to 4 at the back at any stage of the game, when it wasn't working? Not even after taking the lead, as we continued to look uncertain at the back. Why did George Williams come on so late, and Joniesta not at all? Why couldn't Coleman see that we needed tricky players, who are quick off the mark, to draw fouls in dangerous places (as I argued for before the match)? Look at the video of Joniesta against Leeds - in one match alone he manages to win several free kicks just by being so quick over 10 yards and nipping in ahead of his more ponderous opponents. If he could do that against professionals what could he have done against Andorra?
I loved Toshack's criticisms - because they were intelligent and well-informed. What was unnecessary (and un-professional I might add) was the degree of invective attached to it. It should be possible for a pundit to be ruthlessly analytical without getting emotional. It was that element that undermined his credibility, not the analysis itself.

Why did we go 3-5-2 with two defenders, Taylor and Gunter playing in midfield. If we are going to play 5 in midfield, why don't we play 5 midfielders?

Saunders words were at one point we "didn't play well and the tactics were wrong". Fairly critical Id say. Poor old Rushy is bad though bless him. He cant string a sentence together.

Did he say that - I must have switched off mentally by that point? But did he elaborate on which tactics were wrong - and what he would have done differently? No, I thought not.

Message from Ian Rush ahead of tonight's U16s match: "You've got to have a dream... if you don't have any big dreams, nothing happens." Love it.

Also, for some of these kids this will be their best moment in football so I hope they get the result and enjoy it.

Inspirational words from one of our best footballing minds. " I couldn't settle in Italy. It was like living in a foreign country" I always recall the job he did for BBC Wales providing punditry during the 2003 campaign away to Azerbaijan- he couldnt pronounce it properly so it came out something like 'Abababan'. Good old Rushy- a national treasure

The game is on sky sports 5 tonight. Really looking forward to watching the lads because of course it's very rare for them to be televised.
Is Harry Wilson playing? Would love to see how good he really is.

Harry Wilson is too old
He plays for the U19s at the moment.
The 2 stand out players (attacking wise) have been Cullen and Roberts

While in Italy. "what do you miss about the UK Ian?" Rushie replies "baked beans". People laughed at Rushie for that comment but I've been overseas for quite a while now and I'm not kidding you that if you asked 5 British people what do they miss most about the UK at least one would say baked beans. I kid you not!!! Heard it many a time.

I do feel the media are being unfair on Rush, Hughes and the other stars of that era when saying that the current group of players are going to achieve something they didn't. While that's true the facts are that I can't remember a top seed when Rushie and co were playing doing a collapse like Bosnia did.
I'm not taking anything away from this group. Its a bloody delight to be top of the group but some of the groups Rushie and co gad to deal with were bloody horrible!!! Italia 90!!! Remember that one

Remember that one I agree, one quote which stuck out for me on the Radio Wales commentary highlights of the match was, 'we've found 50 ways to fail so far'. Not sure what the 50 was about, but saying we've 'found a way to fail' was a bit harsh in all fairness.

Its typical Welsh hand wringing.
Now we are on the verge of success we have to use it as a platform for more apologising for being the plucky underdog that never made it.
Hartson and Bellers queueing up to tell all and sundry on 5 live that they weren't good enough when it mattered. Bellamy stating that he wasn't good enough as a player really depressed me because the circumstances were so much different back then. Not to mention the often overlooked matter of the crucial Serbia away game being postponed at a time when we had a fully fit squad and confidence was high.
Without diminishing what this squad have achieved, I reckon we would have qualified from this group with Hughes team provided Bosnia collapsed like they have done now. Plus 2nd place being automatic is a luxury Hughes team never had.
What was our 1990 group, out of interest?
