The attendance was fine, but then I remember watching games at the liberty and in cardiff where we were just topping 10k, and also a few at Parc y Sgarlets which were even less. So to get 25k now in mid week on the first school week after summer hols isnt bad. Any fans who say otherwise don't appreciate the history. From 2004 - 2014 we probably averaged 12-14k per match. This^ If that had been a normal qualifier the other day I am pretty sure it would have sold out pretty comfortably. There is a perception at the moment amongst the general public that these nations league matches are nothing but a bunch of glorified friendlies and its going to take a while for this perception to shift. We are a well supported nation these days at international level. One of the best in europe in fact, and thats despite the fact we have been turning away 10's of thousands of people for a lot of our matches in the last few years due to the limited capacity of the CCS.
The turning away of 10's of thousands is not realistic because aside from Ireland game last year I don't think there was any game where you could have filled the Millenium and even for that game I wouldn't have been that sure.
Their are lots of fair weather fans in most countries and would suggest 20,000 is core support for Wales with rest depending on weather, etc etc.
We probably a little higher to between 25-30000 if that.

I was quite surprised it was only 25k . Certainly didn't look like 8000 seats empty. Away end was half empty (1500), there was some segregation either side of it (700+), top tier of Ninian was half full at best (1800), there were quite a few empty seats in the Ninian lower tier (500+), family stand was around two thirds full (1000) and the cooperate areas/top tier of Grandstand had tons of empty seats (2000). Seemed about right to me. There was a lot of empty seats visible and was surprised when they said 25k as thought 22-23k.................. wonder if Corky will confirm how many actually attended vs tickets bought.

To be honest, from my point of view, the calls for O'Neill to go are understandable only in light of the last two hammerings. When you look at the bigger picture and the last qualifying campaign in full, it's hard to fathom. Getting (no offence) that bunch of sloggers to a World Cup play off was an incredible feat. The way he plays isn't pretty but the cupboard is bare in terms of playing talent. IMO there are two ways to go, either back O'Neill and try and grind results out short term and hope something comes through, or do the full scale write-off of Irish chances and start again with a new, cheaper, possibly domestically-based manager. This second method is no guarantee of success either. From what I gather the FAI are greedy and hate the thought of a painful rebuild for a couple of years out of fear of losing sponsors and ticket sales. Therefore they'll most likely continue with MON and Keane and sneak the odd big 1-0 win from time to time by playing to their strengths with experienced players, but ultimately build nothing long term.

From time to time ! Yes it’s been a fallow period of late - apart from being the only 4th ranked European group team to reach the playoffs. However we’ve proved remarkable resilient in overcoming such difficult periods in qualifying for 3 World Cups & 3 European Championships & I’ve little doubt that we will again .

Never underestimate the fickleness of the welsh public. World Cup 2002 Campaign Norway 51000 Ukraine 46750 Poland 44000 Armenia 18683 Belarus 12000Euro 2004 campaign Italy 70000 Azerbaijan 72500 Finland 72500 Serbia & Mont 72514 Russia 73062 Pretty sure we would have had quite a few sell outs in recent years if we had gone back, but I dont think we would have sold it out for every game so we have wisely kept the CCS as a default home stadium. Better to play in a full CCS than a two thirds full Millennium IMO.
