He is not going to mange Wales when he can earn much more in club management
Unfortunately Wales will always be stuck with either getting an experienced manager well past their prime or taking a risk on an inexperienced, former international, player

Do you think He could manage Forest alongside Wales? Sounds a bit mad but the Wales squad pretty much picks itself every time it's international week, when it's international week is he going to be doing that much at Forest that can't be taken care of by his backroom team? I know I might sound like I'm downplaying the importance of what goes on at International management but I don't think it's impossible that he could do both and do both well.

If it was that easy I’m sure we’d see more examples of top managers moonlighting for the likes of Poland and Slovakia alongside their day job. There are too many variables to make it feasible imo, not least the good will of the parent club already paying the manager a wage for their full time commitment. Cooper’s next job will probably be in the prem. If he manages Wales at all it will be when he can’t get a job anywhere else, like Coleman or is failing at club level like Speed was.

Didn't Forest prevent a certain legendary manager of theirs from taking on both jobs?

Failing at club level like Speed was? As I remember it, Sheff Utd we’re happy with Speed, the FAW approached Sheff Utd and were given permission to speak to him. Speed is actually an important example to note in this issue. It was also assumed at the time he wouldn't be interested as the FAW couldn't hope to match his SU wages and the fact he'd only been there for 3-4 months and hadn't yet bedded in properly. It took Speed himself having a word in the ear of a few friends (think Bryn Law was one) to relay a message to the FAW not to automatically discount him from the running...rest is history. My point is that we have no idea what motivates a coach like Cooper, in many instances the money is neither here nor there when compared with the thrill of the challenge presented to them. We don't know what his ambitions are, perhaps he harbours a fierce drive to be manager of his country, who knows. If anything, I'd say the fact Cooper seems to have come of age within the England setup counts against him much more than any financial barrier. He isn't familiar (I assume!) with the Welsh way of doing things and may not actually be a good fit, compared to any other FAW Trust associate/graduate such as Robinson, Henry, Martinez, Bellamy, Vieira etc (Vieira especially considering his very close ties to the FAW and Osh partnership. There are many factors that drive coaches to take up positions, I'm not convinced that money is that big a stumbling block in today's game, especially with Wales' international exposure over the past decade. Steve Cooper for Wales manager? Why not, could easily happen!

So whereas Speed was presumably already a wealthy man, the same cannot be said for Cooper. As you say, we don't know what motivates him, but I suspect he's more likely to be the type of person who will want to push on in club football.

Can see him being manager one day for certain but pretty much no chance of him being the next Wales manager unless Page sticks around for a good few years, which isn't that implausible!
But I think Cooper has got a long club career ahead of him first.

He may well become an international manager one day, perhaps not with us, don't forget he has already been involved with England so you never know they could come calling.

Indeed, Speedo had only been in the role for 4 months. The same people on here love rewriting history with a negative rhetoric. Erm…from memory Speed’s results weren’t exactly stellar were they? Okay it was early days but I recall reading the forums and he was getting a lot of flak particularly because he was persisting with trying to implement playing out from the back and Sheffield United just weren’t capable of doing that given the state they were in and it was costing them goals and ultimately results. It seemed all very well intentioned but quite naive at the same time. It seemed to me the prospect of managing Wales offered him an opportunity to exit gracefully and avoid longer term damage to his burgeoning managerial career. It was certainly a huge gamble by the FAW at the time especially considering Sheff United had them over a barrel for compo for a manager they were probably going to sack in the near future. Would Speed have been interested in the Wales job if he was doing the same sort of job that Cooper is doing at forest? With all due respect to him, most likely not. I disagree with Texan- the job probably isn’t attractive to anyone who is making a name for themselves at Championship level or higher. A young manager will surely want time spent day in day out with players to hone ideas. Page himself, let’s not forget did not exactly make a name for himself in management in the lower leagues and that, possibly, is why he is managing Wales at the moment.

That would be my concern, he probably has an affinity of sorts with England and they for him, especially given that by the time he comes on England’s radar (if he continues his career trajectory) the kids he won the World Cup with would be the foundation of the England team.

Page himself, let’s not forget did not exactly make a name for himself in management in the lower leagues and that, possibly, is why he is managing Wales at the moment. Sheffield United ended up getting relegated that season, actually, after a series of poor events kicked off by Kevin Blackwell who had a knack for kickstarting the demise of several clubs (Leeds, Luton & Bury as well as Sheffield United). Speed's 33% record wasn't stellar, but given the basket case of a club he was in charge of it certainly wasn't bad enough to call him a 'failure' and after he left, Sheffield United completely fell away. You've been asked to expand on your point about Speed failing at Sheffield United and have been put in your place over it, can you now accept that it was an over the top comment and move on? I wouldn't usually get involved too much in such a debate, but with some posters on here there appears to be a common theme where the achievements of Welsh legends are downplayed. Like they want to say 'yeah, Gary Speed wasn't all that was he?'. Is there really a point to that?

Like they want to say 'yeah, Gary Speed wasn't all that was he?'. Is there really a point to that? I don’t think I have been put in my place at all- he left Sheffield United when the rumours on the grapevine were he was getting the sack anyway. Do you really think that he would have left them for Wales if he was winning games there? Seriously? I recall their fans being unable to believe they had actually been paid off for him. Whether his results were the fault of someone else is a debate for a different thread. He had a close season (iirc) to bring in his own players and he started the season poorly enough that he was under pressure to keep the job. Don’t have a go about me for that, blame his players who didn’t get the results required. As for the “achievements of Welsh legends being downplayed” as I’ve said many times before I put my objectivity first and foremost, it annoys me when people say “that wasn’t a red card!” Because a player is Welsh and then in the same breath demand the death penalty because an opposing player raised a leg in a Welsh direction. Such partisanship renders people’s opinions worthless because it reduces it to”Wales good everyone else bad”. I treat Welsh players the same as English or German ones and if they do something worth praising I’ll praise them for it. As such, no matter what he achieved as a player at club level or for Wales Speed’s record at Sheffield United is not praise worthy. That’s it. Whilst we’re on the subject of praising Welsh legends I think you’ve got a very short memory pal because I was one of the very few who was saying we should give Coleman a chance while the likes of you and everyone else was giving him horrendous personal abuse after the Serbia game. You all wanted Dutch fucking Ray in charge 😂 So don’t you go giving me any bollocks about being put in my place because history proved me very right for standing by him whilst the rest of you all ate humble pie and had to row back from the awful things that were said about him. Funny how quickly attitudes changed on that one eh?

Didnt see much reductive football today from Cooper’s team. It’s disappointing to think that we’ve got no chance of him being Welsh manager in a medium term future, or ever perhaps. With some decent youngsters (which this FA cup weekend has brought to the fore) he could do great things.
