If one was at all sceptical you might question this scenario nearly every year. Get near the top, get the crowds in, make a few bob, miss promotion, start another false dawn next season.

I watched the Orient game and I thought Wrexham were a tad unlucky. But I have to say I was disappointed by the lack of quality all round. Perhaps my expectation levels are unreasonably high considering the level - but there was nothing to excite in the way either team played.
I really hope Wrexham get back in the league, but if they're going to thrive they really need to get a set-up that allows them to play a more progressive brand of football. Plenty of teams of have over-achieved in the past and are over-achieving now, at various levels of the game, by playing high-end football on a budget. Think Norwich this season, Brentford the last few seasons, Exeter. Swansea are getting back there too.
If Hughes isn't the answer perhaps they can look to Stuart Webber for guidance for the next appointment. Or perhaps he knows of a budding young Director of Football in his mould who could be brought in over Hughes' head?

Thanks for the lowdown robin1864 and erasedcitizen You're welcome. We're not going anywhere anytime soon after today's performance. Well and truly bottled it, I'd rather us lose every game now and avoid the play-offs completely than enter the lotto with a toothless team and inept management.

I listened to the game on Calon FM, didn't sound very convincing. With the number of games left, even runners-up looks unlikely.

We're a team that anyone fancies their chances against now Hughes and Flynn are out of the honeymoon period, their appointments did nothing but paper over the cracks of an inept team who'd be out of their depth if they got promoted.

I think it’s less drama queen and more getting tired of the false hope the club always gives us. A month ago I actually believed we’d do it. A week ago I thought if we bring in the right loanees we could steal one in the playoffs. Now I just think what’s the point. Obviously I’ll take a playoff spot in the hopes a miracle could happen but supporting Wrexham can be a completely numbing experience. I was devastated with Leyton Orient, seeing we’d lost today affected me about as much as seeing Cameroon had lost to Nigeria.

Very surprised the way it’s gone at Wrexham, no one has a divine right to win and be promoted, but I thought they were in with a Chance Allier this season f winnng the league and it’s gone wrong for them again. They should be doing better.

Not a wind up but maybe time to follow Colwyn Bay.
Get into the wpl then into Europe.
Less travelling Local derbies Should win things Maybe have some local youngsters
Instead of hoping for a cup run and maybe div 2 football.

It's easier to get to Solihull than it is Aberystwyth, and faster by an hour too, despite both being 80+ miles away from Wrexham. The less travelling is a myth when we'd be going on mud roads to reach some places, and we have no derbies in the Welsh system; just teams like Bangor and Caernarfon who's fans got a bit naughty whenever we've visited in the past. As for "local youngsters", see the amount of 30-something scousers playing at the best teams in the WPL to remain competitive, that's not happening either.

Fair point about Solihull but what about Dover and Gateshead etc.
As for youngsters it would be possible to have two or 3 local lads with experience around them.
I get there will be a slight drop in standard overall but if Wrexham went in merthyr would probably follow and the league would attract more sponsors more TV money and would improve.
What is the ultimate dream for fans. I presume to do a Bournemouth?

What is the ultimate dream for fans. I presume to do a Bournemouth? There would be a huge drop in standard, and a glass ceiling suddenly pitched right about your head! The only way this should ever happen is if EVERY Welsh club is forced to do it, and even then it would probably spell the end for some of them. There just wouldn't be any appetite for a Wrexham fan to go and watch them play at Cardiff Met, for example. Support drops, club stagnates, income dwindles, European games become one sided drubbings. It's sad that this is the case, but that's exactly how it would be unfortunately. Newport would I imagine throw the towel in and just not bother if we were forced into that sort of situation.

We don't bring youth through which I agree is a disgrace. Joey Jones has had arguments with the board over this and it's been rumoured that it played a part in him stepping down from his duties with the club. Far more than a slight drop in standard, the WPL is still a few levels below where we are now. I get that we'd improve things for the league due to more sponsorship opportunities, an attendance rise etc. but that shouldn't be down to us. We've been part of the English system for over 100 years, the WPL should find other ways to improve. The overall dream at the moment is to get out of non-league and hopefully pick up a trophy or two along the way.

I see your point but dont agree.
People love to watch a winning team and I can imagine the racecourse being full if a title was on the line.
As for Europe look what Shamrock Rovers did a few seasons ago.
Tns banked over 1m for Europe this season

Your guaranteed a play off spot and based on the fixtures you should still get into third place and home tie. From there its a lottery and your as capable as one else. You don't want to be in the Welsh league, other than a probable annual foray into Europe, I don't see what it has to offer.

You don't want to be in the Welsh league, other than a probable annual foray into Europe, I don't see what it has to offer. I was there on Saturday, as well as the previous 3 where we got played off the park by 2 mid table sides and scraped past a side who are already 1 game away from relegation. Believe me when I tell you, we will get battered in the play offs. I really don't get the responses telling Wrexham fans to cheer up. We were top of the league not too long ago and now we don't look like coming close, again. We've scored less goals than every other side in the top 10, we have a rookie manager in charge who we threw a 3 year deal at and our joint top scorer is a centre back. There's also a poll running on our main forum where 78% have stated they have no confidence in the current board. I would bloody love to be proven wrong, but everything's pointing in the wrong direction. There are too many rumours of the manager having lost the dressing room for comfort, nobody respects Carl Darlington and loan players are being completely frozen out.

Genuine question, what’s going on at Wrexham, they were looking good a while ago? The Wrexham AFC board are not footballing people simply. Dropped lucky with the appointment of Ricketts who, for all his faults, was a good manager at this level. He was allowed to leave halfway through the season which left us with a manager problem. They then appointed the assistant Graham Barrow, who had stated in an interview he didn't want to be a manager and disliked the exposure associated with being a manager, as manager. On a 3 and a half year deal no less. Mike Newell appointed as assistant. Started off well, with a 5-1 win over Salford which was tbh an absolute freak result and not really indicative of the football played this season. Results went down the toilet and Barrow resigned. Newell had to be paid off. The board then thought it would be an excellent idea to appoint former player Bryan Hughes. A man who's only coaching experience included a brief and unsuccessful stint at Scarborough Town on another 3 and a half year deal. Results started well as they tend to and now we're currently playing the worst football we've played all season, a manager completely out of his depth, as well as a board. There's other issues beyond just the manager which ErasedCitizen has touched upon but the manager fiasco just highlights how clueless our board are in terms of football.

What is the ultimate dream for fans. I presume to do a Bournemouth? Dover and Gateshead are places we only have to visit once or twice a season. We could be going to Aberystwyth or Carmarthen 4+ times in the same season for all the various FAW trinkets. For the most part the Conference has been a local league for us, playing teams we have actual history with, like Chester, Hereford or Kiddy. Conversely, we could go into the Welsh system and lose all of our sponsors as we'd have a decreased profile, attendances would drop and we'd shrink to Bangor City levels. The dream would be to do a Bournemouth/Swansea (before they sold out), get into the Premier League and go to Europe. At the moment though, I'd settle for an AFC Wimbledon/Newport reality for the time being.
