Rodon, whilst captaining Wales U21s, played on the right side of his pairing with Mepham - as you can see here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdIDEnDIGD8The only rationale for selecting Lockyear ahead of Rodon is that Giggs wanted to balance the squad with a bit more experience, given that we've already got three rookies in Mepham, Ampadu and Lockyear as potential centre backs. The positive news is that Rodon's ability to play on either side of the defence will only increase his and Wales' options going forwards. I think Giggs would rather Rodon captains the u21s and gets that experience, rather than sit on the bench for us, which is what Lockyer will be doing.

I would expect most of the fringe players will get game time out in Albania - that's what games like this are for. I'd be surprised if Lockyear doesn't get 45 minutes.

Maybe Giggs is trying to help Lockyer get a move in January, which will be good for all involved

Apparently they only became aware that Lawrence was eligible to play for Wales 6 months ago and they have been scouting him in that period. I read somewhere it was 1 Welsh grandparent and 2 somewhere else, so no doubt it will come out in the wash. If he considers himself Welsh, satisfies the criteria and wants to play then welcome aboard. The stronger the squad the better. Saw an interview Page gave recently, when asked about our scouting system ,said it was easier now we have some success as agents come to them with names of eligible players, wonder if this is an example of that, I personally have no problems with that as long as we don't go full Cascarino on it!

Doesn't seem to be many Premier/Championship clubs after him that I am aware of. I'm sure he probably could do a job at a mid table Champ side like Birmingham but not international quality

How disappointing. It's called an international break for a reason! He couldn't be more important for us in the Denmark game so I hope he features, even if it's just for 45 minutes. No disrespect to them, I know they are wholly committed and they still have a place in the squad, but I don't fancy a starting line-up that includes King and Gunter. Agree about Matt being absolutely essential, even for the Albania match. Chelsea will not be happy with us if we play Ethan in both matches.
Still, I feel that the Albania match is the perfect environment to give non-playing / fringe players like Woodburn, King and Gunts at least 45 minutes. Otherwise, why else invite them into the 23?

Seems funny calling Woodburn a "fringe player". It only seems like yesterday that he was the answer to all our prayers! Hopefully he doesn't go the way of other past promising youngsters.

I'd never begrudge them a start in the Albania game... just not in our last UEFA Nations League fixture of the season.

He is still only 19. It's taken until the last 12 months for Wilson and Brooks to shine for us. Woodburn should definitely feature in the Albania fixture. He needs game time.

Look at this strength in depth! Hennessey
C Roberts Williams Chester Dummett
Allen Ramsey
Brooks Lawrence Wilson
Bale
vs.
Vokes
James T Roberts Woodburn
Smith Ampadu
Taylor Lawrence Mepham Gunter
Ward
Doesn't include Thomas, King, Lockyer or Adam Davies. Plus Ben Davies, Richards, Ledley, Edwards, Rodon, Evans etc.
So many options!

I'm particularly liking the first option you've postulated. My only problem with it is that I can't add Smith and Ampadu to it!
So many players, too little positions.

The increasing depth bodes well for the qualifiers next year. There’s still a lot of inexperience but the management team have put these international windows to good use by blooding them all.

So many options! Before we get carried away, look at the second option One player playing prem Two regularly in the championship One in Dutch champ, no better than league 1 or 2 One played a few games for Amderlect I do believe the future looks bright but think we might be getting carried away a bit

But we'd rarely use that second option (except maybe for friendlies). Likelihood is that they all play at some point but we'd rarely (if ever) play them all together as per the second option.

Can't recall a time where we had good options at all positions (CM and CF the possible exceptions)

Ampadu instead of Smith if he's fit. Taylor has been starting for Aston Villa recently, I don't think there's much between him and Dummett. Given that Smith is playing regularly and King isn't, I can see how Smith could be a more logical option. But I think if King is fit enough then we could really use his experience against a very good Denmark midfield. Matt Smith and Ampadu are going to be huge for us, but I'd rather see King alongside Allen and Ramsey for this game. I'm a bit disappointed there's no Lee Evans yet again. Nice to see Shaun Macdonald back in Wigan's squad the other day. What's up with Ledley, is he injured??

I've seen enough of Smith to assure you that he isn't the future for Wales - he is the right now ;-) Compared to a fully fit Ampadu, Ethan has a slight edge - but Ampadu right now is far from match fit.
Also seen Taylor the last two weeks and agree with you, he can start for me as well.

Smith could become a very useful player for us but Ampadu is different gravy.

Anyone have intel as to why Lee Evans doesn't ever make the squad? This is clearly not football related.

King isn't anywhere near those 2 right now in that position.
