As I understand the home nations agreement, which was updated at some point in the 2000s I believe, it says that a player can only qualify on residency if they've had at least 5 years of education in that country before the age of 18. I assume Garrick wouldn't qualify on those grounds

Don't think FIFA's 5 year residency rule applies between the home nations. It's for naturalised citizenship and Garrick's British with a UK passport whether he lives in England or Wales. "The associations of these four countries entered an agreement regarding international eligibility in 1993 which provides that a player holding a British passport is eligible to play for the country of his birth, the country of the birth of either of his natural parents or the country of birth of any of his natural grandparents. If the player, his natural parents and his natural grandparents were born outside the U.K., he may play for the home country of his choice. Our understanding is that once a player has played for one of the home countries, even if it is only a friendly match, the 1993 agreement precludes him playing for another home country. The FIFA rule change for players under 21 must be followed in the U.K., however. Under U.K. law, a player (or anyone, for that matter) who was born abroad becomes eligible for a British passport after five years of lawful residence in the country, and he thus becomes eligible to play for one of the home countries provided he has not played for another national side in official competition." www.englandfootballonline.com/TeamBack/Eligibiliy.htmlThat looks like he could play for any country within the UK anytime. Looks like he was born in Jamaica so you may well be right. He considers himself English based on his responses to some of my tweets, though, I'd just assumed he was born around Huddersfield where he grew up.

Yes, born in Jamaica is key.

He will never be eligible to play for Wales. 5 years of compulsory education in a country before 16. Only Jamaica and England for him

He can’t play for Wales,NI or Scotland. See the likes of Dele Adebola and David Johnson for a better understanding. Back in the day I think they could of and that’s how Eric Young played for us but certainly not now. Otherwise we could’ve ended up having Sterling it makes no sense

There was talk when Speed was manager, it was when Bournemouth were in the championship I think, but nothing came of it

I remember watching Inaki Williams for the first time a few years ago and getting excited by his talent & name. The legacy of slave names coming back to haunt us.

I lived in Canada for three years and I was there when he made his debut at 16 v Curcao. Him and Bale are the only players I have ever seen debut and there’s just been this feeling they were destined for great things. I’ve been rambling on about him to football mates for years. Soccer is far bigger in Canada (at least the west coast) than people realise outside of the country. I certainly think it’s on par with the A League in Australia but they are just unlucky geographically like us being in Europe. Put them in Oceania or Asia and they’d qualify. Over the next few years they will improve so so much and come from the shadows

I think he could easily go on to become the world’s best LB or even move further forward. I knew he had already been capped by Canada, but I did wonder with a name like Davies whether he had Welsh heritage somewhere down the line.

Curtis Jones was looked into for links after a rumour went round of having a welsh grandfather. Was not true and has no near enough welsh links to be considered. Seen a bloke on twitter saying Reece James from chelsea is eligible however it is probably lies.

He was very attacking a few seasons ago. I think they are just teaching him the defensive aspects of the game to make him more well rounded

I love the fact that everyone is asking about the eligibility of players because their name is Jones,Williams or Davies, despite the fact that the current players who are playing for us due to Eligibility have names like Moore, Vaulks, Matondo, Ampadu and Vokes. Haha.

Haha. Yeah it’s hilarious. I’m surprised Shaq O Neal never played for Ireland in the Olympics. The first name and middle name really are more of a clue these days if people are looking for someone who could be eligible. Expat parents tend to give middle names as they want children to have some sort of identity

To be fair, it's how Bryan Flynn ended up getting Ashley Williams involved with us whilst he was at Stockport, even if it is generally a pretty daft concept.

I’m glad they aren’t eligible tbh, means we’ve not missed out! The annoying one for me is Jay DaSilva, considering we’ve got Cole. However, with Davies left back he wouldn’t get in our team anyway.
On the subject of channel Islanders, we’ve got a youngster from Jersey in our u16s, Luke Harris.

Charlie Caton, 16 at Shrewsbury. Was on the bench today in league 1. Son of Bala town manager and has represented wales schools. Was at wrexham before he moved to Shrewsbury. Merseyside boy though I think and seems as if he supports England on his Twitter.
