Out of curiosity I googled Welsh swimmer at the games Medi Harris and indeed she was born in September. I think I had a lucky escape as I could have been called Chwefror!! A terrific fact. At my welsh speaking school a Geography teacher used to say he knew of two people who couldn’t speak welsh who called their daughter allanfa-dan. I’ve seen this on twitter on other occasions so surely an urban myth. Also there are many houses in Wales called Ty Bach, which yes you could get away with I suppose but when I see one I just think of toilet!

I was looking up the number of athletes per country last night, and was pleasantly surprised that we have 201 athletes representing, whereas England have around 430. Not bad for a country of our population - 3m, as opposed to Englands' 55m.

Does anyone know of a website which will tell me which events have Welsh interest on a daily basis? I tried Walesonline but I should have known better... *Update* Found this link on the official games website: results.birmingham2022.com/#/nation-schedule/WAL

Makes me think Sport England get a lot more Government and Lottery funding than our body which obviously leads to better training / facilities etc.

Well we proportionally win more medals and golds than them right?
Golds Population of Wales 3.1mn 1.29 Population of England 56mn 0.73 Population of Scotland 5.5mn 1.27 Population of Northern Ireland 1.9mn 0.52
The Jocks have been patting themselves on their back congratulating themselves for being such amazing athletes. We missed out on a few close calls / and a few of our favourities have failed to deliver too
Medals Population of Wales 3.1mn 5.81 Population of England 56mn 2.00 Population of Scotland 5.5mn 5.81 Population of Northern Ireland 1.9mn 4.21

As quoted by dai above England have roughly twice as many athletes at these games but their medal tally is circa six times ours. I do think their government etc do a lot more for them than ours.

I disagree
I just think it comes down to numbers. The reason they are far more productive per competing athletic is because on average they will have better athletes per that restricted pool as they have a far larger pool of capable athletes to choose from. Liverpool region has a third of the population of Wales for goodness sake!
We do well from the facilities available in England, as our athletes can and do use them, and being linked to a country as huge as England helps the funding indirectly. England has almost 20x our population

2 gold this morning! 7 now in total - get in!
Look at how the women's table tennis team supported Joshua Stacey in his table tennis final - Carey was crying! Hope Carey and Anna get to the final at 4pm today - they so deserve a medal!
Then Rosie Eckles destroys her opponent! She should be professional surely - her attacking style and the power of her punching - wow!
Go team Wales - our Paralympians have been particularly impressive and inspiring!

Two more big chances at gold today. Currently going strong in the road race. It’s not just geraint there’s a lot of Welsh talent here. Chance of a gold in boxing later

I haven't watched all the games so apologies if I have got this wrong.
But from what I have seen are we in a position where we cannot raise a relay team, either 100 or 400 male or female?

So great to see the table tennis women win such a well deserved bronze When one compares Wales with Scotland - I guess one thing that stands out is they seem far stronger in traditional athletics events. I remember we used to have quite a few talented track athletes in the past. What has happened? Is it coaching or infrastructure?

Does anyone think they should try and get an equal amount of competitors? No doubts they are the best in the commonwealth at that sport but Australia and England had twice as many competitors as everyone else.

The have demanded the return of Archery and shooting of which they are unusually gold medal specialists. Organisers also say the future of the games is too include sports that are popular in Asian countries. This makes me wonder if India can start to join in the dominating

How good are we at cycling? Road World Championships: Zoe Backstedt and Joshua Tarling win junior time trial golds www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cycling/62965151Both are Welsh and got silver last year in this event. Zoe in particular looks destined to be a superstar. Still just 17 (for a few days) and looking to defend her junior world road race which she won last year. In the time trial she was on a different level and destroyed the rest. She was even quicker than all the seniors, which ran their race a couple of days ago, for certain stages. Surely she should walk young sports personality of the year? They reckon she is destined to be dominant in years to come Its great being Welsh!

I am not an expert but she seems to be able to do everything and they are raving about her as the next big thing across both men and women's cycling - the heir to Vos. She won by more than a minute and a half which is apparently incredible and she is world champion across very different disciplines: Zoe Backstedt wins junior women’s time trial at Road Cycling World Championships - in-site.xyz/insight/zoe-backstedt-wins-junior-womens-time-trial-at-road-cycling-world-championships/ -The 17-year-old now holds the junior women’s world titles in cyclocross, road race, time trial and Madison.

Tarling will get plenty of opportunities at Ineos now they've begun focusing more on younger riders. Plenty of big names leaving the team at the end of this year but Tarling will still be well down the pecking order for big races. Pidcock, Plapp and the Hayter brothers all have shown huge promise to justify the team's investment. Even if he only develops into a good time trialist he will be a useful World Tour rider - plenty of time on his side aswell. Good to see another Welsh rider in the pro ranks.
Backstedt is a very promising rider. Women's cycling will be far more open with Annemiek Van Vleuten retiring. The development of Women's cycling means she's coming through at the perfect time.
