Love Sorba, such a passionate & down to earth guy. Good article on him here ahead of the playoff final In some ways I do think it will be better for Welsh football if Huddersfield win the playoff. Sorba being promoted would be an incredible story - and it feels like either way Brennan will be a Premier League player as someone will pick up on the back of this season www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/61611022

If Sorba keeps up his rate of productivity in terms of assists then he will get a crack at the Premier League at some point too, so I don't think its so urgent.
Brennan getting goals in a big final and coming into the play off with Wales full of confidence would be best for us, albeit Page already seems to be focused on using him versus Poland (which is surely wrong) than the play off. Ideally I'd love him and Moore up front but Bale has to fit in somewhere. I would also prefer Wilson to Ramsey as Ramsay is just not fit / fluent enough but there is no way Page would bench him.

Why is using BJ v Poland wrong? The guy is young and full of energy and will want to prove a point... great game for him. Page will go with Wilson or James next Sunday, and so he should, they guys have always done well for Wales over the past 3 / 4 years. We can always bring BJ on if needs be. I think I would feel more confident with him coming on than Wilson or James.

Imagine - Dan James or Bale pull a hamstring in the first 5 mins of the final.
You'd rather have a fresh Johnson off the bench to replace them. Worse case - Brennan takes a knock versus Poland and misses play off and the same scenario happens
Let Colwill, Matando and co play versus Poland. All our game changers need to be fit and available for the big one!

Thought he played very well today, probably eclipsed his Welsh counterpart Brennan on the whole.
Would love if a PL side came in for him over the summer.

I'm happy for him to have another season in the Championship playing week in week out as a key player at a side challenging at the top end of the table as opposed to going to a Premier League side with one season of professional football under his belt and a second move in the space of a year which will probably see him play a lot less.

The problem with trying to develop Sorba as an attacking Wing-back is Huddersfield themselves only used him there as an emergency last season (even then, I saw for myself it was more of an asymmetric system with the RCB basically at RB an him as a RW). Now, he only ever plays as a winger. Even then, he is mainly in the team for his set-piece delivery (which it is still unlikely he'd get a look at) and would be way down the list in terms of wing options.

Exactly, I don't know why Page uses him as WB cover. The only proper WB's we had at the WC were Neco and Roberts, and the jury is still out on Roberts doing that role well.

Agree. For me, Sorba shouldn't be in the squad as a wing-back option, as he no longer players there at club level. He should be one of our wingers, and for me that pushes him down the pecking order. Neco, Connor, RND will all be there, I'd prefer to see Burns back personally. He was really good against Poland, and then he was poor against the Netherlands away (so was everyone aside from Brennan), but he hasn't been given a chance since then, and was actually out of position in both games as LWB, when he only plays RWB for Ipswich
If Page really doesn't fancy Burns then someone like Huggins, or Declan John should be looked at

I believe Burns has also been playing as a winger this season, so I don't think he's a viable WB option. Huggins, Beck, or Stevens would be my preference.

Maybe we need to drop the whole WB idea altogether. I just don't think we have the personnel to pull off that formation good enough, and we also struggle to compete in the middle against same level or better opposition.

I agree and I think we need to simplify everything with a 4-4-2

We have no viable left back and our best RB is defensively suspect.

To play with wing backs everyone needs to be fit and durable, across the park we're not fit and durable.

I agree and I think we need to simplify everything with a 4-4-2 We have no viable left back and our best RB is defensively suspect. Ben Davies is fine at left back if you play an adventurous RB. He's tidy enough on the ball anyway, he's just not a "world class" left back The whole point of a 4-4-2 is that it takes pressure off the wing backs being the sole player in the wide area - something we were exposed by this tournament

Yeah wing backs led to us getting pulled apart all over the place. You can't play open and expansive football successfully if you don't have players that can get the pass right 80-90% of the time minimum, our lads were messing around trying to pass it at the back and getting into all kinds of trouble. You also need all of the players working considerably hard and knowing exactly what they're doing to conserve energy. I know they're easy targets but Bale and Ramsey spent a lot of the tournament not looking like players that knew exactly what they should be doing, they were just trying things and often barely seemed there. We need to go 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 with fast wide players supporting whoever is up top, not necessarily as regimented as those formations look on paper but this would allow us to be a tighter and harder to beat team. Whenever you try and fix something in sport you go back to basics and you get the basics right, that's your foundation. I'd rather we approach Croatia away wanting to keep it tight, respecting a point if it's the best we can get and using that game as an opportunity to build confidence and remind everyone, including ourselves, that we're not just the team that capitulated against Iran and England and spent the last Nations League group shooting ourselves in the foot.

Asymmetrical systems are fairly common. Man City do it all the time with Walker joining to make a back three and usually Cancelo bombs on.
Not to say we'd replicate that and even if Davies would be deeper doesn't me he can't be an outlet by swinging crosses from deeper areas of the pitch whilst still giving a degree of protection preventing the counter. Think it definitely could work

I'd like to see it tried. Doesn't get away from our awful midfield though. That's the concerning area for me.

At a certain point though sometimes it's fine to accept going 3v3 in the midfield is somewhat pointless if the other team has the superior players in there anyway. Sometimes just having 2 solid CMs sitting in can give you an advantage in other areas of the pitch

Just a reminder that Mourinho tried the asymmetrical back 4 at Spurs, with Aurier bombing on and Davies holding back. Nice idea in theory, didn't work in practice and ditched after a few games

I think you've suggested he's well suited for that particular role. You would think so in theory, but just pointing out he struggled at it the one period it has been tried.

Nice idea in theory, didn't work in practice and ditched after a few games Mourinho tried a lot of tings that didn't work and continues to do so, we've got to do what is best for us. Well yes, obviously! Ha. Couldn't care less what Mourinho does and how successful it is. But there's a few making the case for a back 4, which is fair enough. The main issue of course is that we have much better wing backs and wide centre backs than full backs - in fact, it could be argued that our best players play in those positions, so moving to a system that doesn't have those roles is questionable. Now allez has suggested the asymmetrical back 4, which as I say, could be the solution in theory. But I think it's a legitimate concern that it has been tried before, with what is arguably our best player currently, and he didn't perform the role very well - to the extent where he was dropped from the team and Mourinho went with a more attacking full back in Reguilon. This is a good piece on what they did at Spurs: breakingthelines.com/tactical-analysis/tactical-analysis-asymmetry-at-tottenham-hotspur/As I say, good idea in theory, but Davies didn't perform the role very well when it was tried. I'm not averse to see us trying it, although I probably wouldn't choose our most difficult group game. I favour the more unpopular option, which is to carry on with the 532, but to perform it better - if we could do what we did in Prague with that formation, I would be confident of getting a result out in Split. That was a really good performance, and it was the perfect setup against good sides.

On the bench tonight for the game against Rotherham, I hope he can get himself back into the team and playing well otherwise he's no good to us when there's players like Hedges doing all the stuff we hoped Sorba would.
