Where to start with this one ? Firstly there is no guarantee Giggs would call him up, so he got lucky with Moore but I doubt he'd ever heard of him until someone spotted he was eligible. Mullin is a handful , he has an unorthodox style with a great workrate and his scoring record is pretty impressive albeit at lower level, but a call up is a big decision for Page to make. Would Mullin be interested, I'm unaware if he has been questioned about this and would Page play a system that provides him or any other striker for that matter, scoring opportunities which is something to consider judging by how we play under this manager, as we cannot rely on dead ball situations anymore. The one thing in his favour is that Mullin is in the form of his life, but it's really down to the big talking man in charge, who has many important decisions to make in his next squad selection.

In the winter we spoke about need for players to be playing and match-fit.
Hard to argue that Mullin could easily step up from Conference to international level. He did against Sheffield United wonderfully, was so impressive, but don't think his performance against Coventry was as good.
Would I support him if in the team? Obviously. Would I support someone else if picked? Obviously.

When you think about it it is a bit bonkers the way everyone goes to extremes in backing youth:
George Thomas (QPR) - was a forward - probably scored 2 goals in his life but because he was at Leicester he was in a few squads and even played in Nations League versus Ireland where he messed up a 1 on 1
George Williams - was a forward - never played for Fulham (Championship at the time) but made a few squads with fans raving because he evaded 2 challenges versus Netherlands away
You know my opinion on Mark Harris
Smith - looked OK to be fair but no material improvement
Mullin - 46 goals in 65 games for Wrexham; 32 in 46 for Cambridge - obviously started becoming prolific from 25. Its not like he did not score at all before then - just it was one every two and a bit at Swindon and one in four at Tranmere - but where did they play him?
He must have had a lot of assists in there too given his style of play
Why are we like but he has just turned 28? Look at Kiefer Moore - who cares? If he can do a job and is a better option than a youngster then play him. We have no goalscorers whatsoever! lets see if we can get 2-4 years out of him. Obviously if he has zero impact then all the naysayers will have been 100% right. He just looks such a positive character - why not, especially if we can keep picking players like Gunter well past their sell by date!
His attitude/work ethic must come in part from not making it at Liverpool, Everton and Huddersfield as a kid. I love his passion. He seems like an ideal fit for us.

There's an annoying tendency developing on this forum to mis-represent players who don't quite make it or whose careers didn't quite go as hoped
George Thomas played just under 50 games as a teenager for Coventry and was rated highly enough by recent PL champions Leicester to be bought and kept around
Williams made his debut for MK Dons at 16, was highly rated in the same youth sides as Dele Alli and played a fair few games in the Championship for Fulham as a teenager. He then had real bad luck with injuries that thwarted his career
Matt Smith was highly rated at Man City, was very impressive a FC Twente and has rarely let us down

Give it a rest. You've previously suggested the likes of Luke Harris should have been capped by now, despite only playing one senior game and I'm sure you've made similar comments about others. You can't have it both ways.
FYI Moore got his call-up when he was 26 and playing in the Championship, a world of difference between that and a 28yo playing in the conference.

I was putting it in terms that we should not exclude someone as a bit of an experiment because they are 28 and proven to some extent, when we are quite prepared to throw in someone who could be a prospect but have done little. I am not saying throwing those youngsters was wrong - we are a small country with limited resources - I am just saying I would be prepared to give Mullin the same opportunity.
On those players I mentioned, I am harsh, but I never saw anything in them that convinced me they would be useful as there was just little end product, based on what I saw. I had some time for Smith - I followed his career in the Netherlands too - hoping he would improve - but he has gone sideways hasn't he?
Simplistic but I would give Mullin a game in a friendly or two to see if he is worth pursuing, given his goalscoring. Just my view. I would also blood Luke Harris too but I note he is not being used by Fulham and so one would assume he is not demanding he should be picked. So maybe both he and Mullin will not fit the bill at international level but we need new blood but I know Mullin gives energy and is something we do not have - a goalscorer, while Harris seems promising but is clearly not a Bale, Ramsey or a Rooney - because when you are that good you are demanding a first team place at 17/18. Ideally he goes on loan to a Championship club (or lower) and hopefully we will see if he is indeed a premier league player in the making - as happened for Harvey Elliott of course!

Yep, this is the bloke who was getting hysterical five minutes ago because that future world beater Chris Popov might elect to play for Bulgaria, now he’s complaining about over hyped youngsters and mocking the number of goals scored by George Thomas. I can’t keep up.

I think the general feeling was that we needed to see how Paul Mullin would do against Championship opposition to form any decent opinion on whether he's worth a look. Two games, two goals and a Man Of The Match performance yesterday against the side well clear in second place, I think he's done alright, hasn't he?

We don't have a friendly for another 9 months when Mullin will be close to 29. There will probably be another year before the one after that. So we would need to test him in crucial qualifiers

That seems to have been how most on here feel anyway, which is fair enough. For me, he should only be called up (barring injury-induced desperation) if he's prepared to move up 2 or 3 levels. It would be a shame for Wrexham, but it should be the only way for him to earn a squad place imo. The reason he said in the documentary that he wanted to move to Wrexham was to be close to his family, but surely if he's good enough, other clubs in the area would go for him. Stoke, for example, is an hour's drive from Liverpool, as is Huddersfield and Blackpool. Wigan is closer than Wrexham. That's four mid to lower championship clubs right there who are all similar distances from his family home and could definitely do with a decent Championship-level striker.

Just a query: Was Rob Page at the Racecourse yesterday? Thought he might/should have been present - to back a Welsh team against more fancied opponents, and he could have viewed Paul Mullin for himself as well. Perhaps he had to think twice about visiting North Wales, as he lives in Sheffield and is an ex-Sheff Utd player. A final thought - on the Mullin debate - if selected, but doesn't start against Croatia, I feel sure he could cause a lot of problems for the Latvia defence on the following Tuesday night! Gabbidon suggested in the first half commentary for BBC that "one or two people from the FAW might be here watching him". Difficult to tell whether it was just an off the cuff comment or whether he has inside info. I'd put my money on someone from the FAW being there after Mullin's performance against Coventry - which impressed me personally

Whilst the championship (by all accounts) pays mad money it wouldn't surprise me an ounce that as two well known TV & film personalities the Wrexham owners can afford to pay their marquee signing more than he would get being Stoke or Wigan's 4th choice striker. I expect Wrexham's resolve will be tested in the summer. after his numbers and FA cup performances this season. Provided they have escaped the conference a large transfer fee by that point would probably be a good deal for Wrexham and then we would see where the truth lies with regards to what motivations Mullin has.

Anyone with grey matter can tell they're full of shit and actually mean they're happy to play Premier League football with anyone that'd give them the opportunity. At the time we signed Mullin, Charlton Athletic were also rumoured to be in for him, the following season Forest were too. Obviously being paid a generous amount of money and a starring role in a Hollywood project sells better.

Moreover, he said that the things written about his salary were grossly exaggerated, so yeah, he must have been lying if that's not the case. This is someone talked up as a good championship striker on here (he would need to be to have a strong case for squad inclusion). If so, why would he only be Stoke or Wigan's 4th choice striker? And why would championship clubs not be willing to give him a typical championship-level salary? Wrexham supposedly have a League-1 style budget - even if they've gone a fair bit above that for Mullin, surely any championship club would be able to more than compete with it. I don't think it adds up personally - I don't believe he's getting more at Wrexham than what championship clubs would be willing to invest in a striker they think is good enough for that level.

Obviously being paid a generous amount of money and a starring role in a Hollywood project sells better. Yeah, it's entirely plausible that he was lying when he outright denied he was getting anything close to the amount reported. But I also think it's implausible that he's getting more than what championship clubs pay strikers at that level. So the point is, if they thought he was good enough, it would have been within their gift to offer him the same sort of money. There are plenty of championship clubs in that area, so his stated reasons around being close to his family doesn't really add up. So chances are there hasn't been any interest in him from championship clubs. That may change now after some of his performances, but imo the onus should be on him to get that sort of move and perform consistently at that level if he is serious about representing us.

Think he's reportedly on just under £5k a week in Wrexham. Which means he'd be up there with one of our higher earners if he joined my team Wigan.
Think effectively now by taking the money at Wrexham, which is fair enough it's a short career! He's almost priced himself out of move unless someone is willing to pay him more than that or he can prove he's able to do it at a higher level consistantly so teams would take a punt.
No lower end Championship club would pay him those wages for what they are effectively getting an unknown quantity at that level.

The best thing for Paul Mullin is to be happy doing what he is doing and earn what he needs to retire a financially comfortable man for his family. Chancing a move to the Championship in the hope that Robert Page picks him over Mark Harris is not the best thing for him to do. He's happy at Wrexham, he clearly enjoys everything that's going on there and it's a unique journey for any player who plays for Wrexham right now.

This is his breakout season in terms of attention in almost every respect (no-one was really touting him for a call up prior to this). So he wouldn’t have justified a decent wage from a championship club previously. In other words going up the league when he left Cambridge he would have had a lot more to prove than going down where he was more of a guaranteed thing and a marquee signing for a club desperate to entice big name EFL players that would guarantee promotion and his wage would no doubt reflect that. That picture of course has been completely altered and, after his FA cup performances, he looks like he would be less of a risky punt by a championship club and could command decent money.

Agreed, at the time he left Cambridge. He was 26 and that was his first real exceptional scoring season, in league 2. Now, obviously career projection is hardly linear, but while I am sure he got offers from bottom-half Championship clubs, it would hardly have been anywhere near a starter. It'd be 'taking a chance' so to speak, so I would be shocked if he was getting offers of £5k/w at that point from Championship clubs.

|
|
Post by iot on Feb 2, 2023 12:23:44 GMT
Yeah, I completely agree that he wouldn't have got that same offer for a championship club, otherwise i think it's very likely he would have gone there. Championship clubs clearly weren't confident enough that he would have an impact at that level to invest what an average championship player earns. It will be interesting to see if that changes over the summer. If it does and he has an ok-ish start, I would be 100% for including him in our squad for the qualifiers at the end of the year. If he doesn't move higher up, considering his age, I personally don't think it would be a wise decision to call him up.
