Think any talk of this training camp being a planning advantage is probably more true for the game v Scotland than the one v us. Surely they have to prioritise the game in front of them. Not to mention that you have 3 players in the PL not in this camp plus several in Portugal, Spain & Italy. But the game against Scotland will be what, their 4th in as many weeks? Their 5th would then be against us so one can only imagine how well versed in their roles they will be by then. They are essentially getting to act like a club side with all the advantages that brings. Admittedly there are down sides too- the intensity v Scotland will be a step up and as you point out they have their foreign based players missing (although their initial squad for March contained more domestic than foreign based players so they seem less reliant on the foreign based players)

Gilmour will be touch and go I reckon. Ankle. There is talk of Tierney being available for the Scots. Knee operation in late March. Arsenal will be spitting feathers if he plays.

Nothing to fear but out of all three teams in our path, Scotland in the final still makes me uneasy.

Typical of us to have the choice between a tough derby team or against a team with the whole world behind them.
I’d hate to lose at home to Scotland in the final, so I’d rather Ukraine get through, who I feel we’d be more comfortable against too.

Nothing to fear but out of all three teams in our path, Scotland in the final still makes me uneasy. Scott McKenna has been very decent every time I've seen him play for nottingham forest, but he's still a massive step down from tierney who I suspect he will replace. They don't really have anyone in their squad who's a threat carrying the ball, just lots and lots of similarly solid players. McGinn is probably the most dynamic, and Adams can be a real nuisance, but this is the type of team we should be beating if we want to go to the World Cup. If we can get Bale and Ramsey to produce somewhere near what they're capable of, I'm confident, but as always that's a big 'if' given their lack of gametime.

Don't forget that Gilmour was apparently better than anyone England had according to Souness during Euro 2021

Yes, Gilmour looks like a great prospect. Not someone that can hurt us, but can pull the strings. Very surprised it didn't work out for him at Norwich. Hopefully that failed loan spell + the fact he's returning from injury means he won't be on his game against us.

Moving away from Scottish matters, and looking at Ukraine.... On their May "European tour", they have recently beaten Borussia Monchengladbach (Germany) and Empoli (Italy) as well as drawing against Rijeka (Croatia). So they're getting more actual match practice than Scotland or Wales, as well as building up a good team/squad spirit. Add to that the fact that players from e.g. Man City/Everton/elsewhere on the continent are joining the camp this week could make for them being a very formidable opponent at Hampden Park on the 1st of June.

Those sides won’t exactly be going full beans will they? It will be a million miles away from an international game. I think they have a decent chance against Scotland. But to go again 4 days later after 4 months without proper games? Can’t see it

Has there been a formal announcement from the Ukraine FA about their squad for the play off game? I have had a quick look on their FA website and cannot see anything like that

I have to say, every time I have, I've just thought he oozes class. A Joe Allen type of player who seems to have all the time in the world and makes teams tick. I think he'll come good, but hopefully not in the immediate future!

A few more tipsters chipping in now on betting websites. Scotland by 1 goal seems to be a theme.

I kinda think we are already guilty of underestimating both these sides. Granted they will have played each other a few days earlier. Plus we have the benefit of playing our B side in Poland…..But we have ALWAYS bottled it in years gone by……. ( even When we qualified in Bosnia we lost and were scrambling around listing for other results).
Let’s not underestimate either side. The Sweaties have vastly improved over the last 12 months and Ukraine will have the whole world with them and are an unknown quantity.

If anything we bottled the Israel home game 0–0, but they did a job on us and we’ve never done well Thurs night away / Sunday evening home (Georgia in 2016).

The only bottle job in recent years was ROI at home tbh.

Agree to a point, we "used" to bottle it, but at the same time, we have managed to get results where we needed to over the last couple of years. Can think of recently: Austria at home - To get to the Playoff final Belgium at home - To Secure Playoff for WC2022 Czech Away - must not lose game to have any chance of a home playoff Turkey - Qualify for 2nd round of Euros - that was a must win game Hungary at home - Must win to qualify for Euro2020 Croatia at home - Must not lose to have chance of qualifying for Euro2020 The only disappointment was the Denmark game in Euros.

2 weeks and a bit to go for this game. Predictions coming in now from betting/tipping websites. First four I came across were 3-0 Scotland, another two that said Scots by 1 goal and another a 1-1 draw. Scotland clear favorites and rightly so. They got a good home record. What I will say though after the Eurovision public vote, lets hope FIFA are not playing silly buggers and getting a sympathetic referee towards Ukraine. Scotland slightly bigger favourites now than when I originally posted. There are more tipsters going for a 1-1 draw now though. Still most going for Scots victory.

Is this the same time that we qualified with four points to spare between us and the next team with also a superior goal difference? Oh, and the same time that we went through the entire campaign with only one defeat and only conceding four goals? I suppose if you mean that we had to rely on other teams results not being as good as ours then you may say we were scrambling around for other results. What’s more likely is that you’ve only remembered that our one defeat was the day we qualified and presumed we got lucky with other results going our way, when In reality we were worthy qualifiers over the whole campaign

Yeah we bottled it hard against Hungary when we had to win as well... Bottled it against the Turks in a must win... Bottled it against Italy when we needed to not concede... Bottled it against the Fins to finish top & as the best team in League B... Bottled it against Belgium when we needed the draw... Bottled it against Austria in the semi... We're ALWAYS bottling it

Back to the Scotland -v- Ukraine fixture.... I read this just now:
"The former captain of Scotland’s national team has said he will be hoping they fail to qualify for the World Cup.
Graeme Souness, the Liverpool and Rangers legend, has said that he will be cheering on Ukraine when the two sides meet".
What's this all about?

We started well but when we needed to do our bit to qualify on our own merits we drew with Israel, lost to Bosnia and it was other results that ended up qualifying us. Looking back we definitely profited from Bosnia have a diabolical start, it could have been a hell of a lot closer if they had played to their usual standard throughout. We have kicked on a bit since then in terms of ability to “get the job done”, the one blot on the copy book since then is when we bottled the World Cup (and it was bottling it). We were abjectly poor against a dog rough ROI. The occasion was too big that night. So I n some ways it feels like the Euros is an itch now well scratched, whereas the WC still remains the proverbial albatross round the neck.

If we lose the final it's not because of some destiny to always be bottlers, it will be because we're beaten on the day Not sure where this ‘bottlers’ nonsense has come from. If we lose fair and square does that automatically make us ‘bottlers’? Is every team that loses a big game, final or a play off a ‘bottler’? Is it possible to lose on Sunday without being bottlers? Or is it simply win=heroes, lose = bottlers? These are genuine questions. I’ve no idea what the difference, if any, is between a team that loses a big game and a bottler.
