Huge game this one, and the type of game we've had good success in recently times - Hungary, Czechia, Austria, Ukraine all popping to mind. I feel sometimes we are better when we have space to counter on teams, and this might require a similar performance
Based on the need to counter I'm wondering if we should be going for something like...
Hennessey Connor-Lockyer-Mepham-Davies Ampadu-Morrell Brennan-Ramsey-DJ Moore
Keep things nice and tight, have Moore as the out ball, but pace out wide to try and hurt them when we can

Turkey are away to Latvia the same night we play Armenia. It would be terrific if they dropped points & we got the win as they would then be desperate to beat us, something that I believe suits us & your ‘keeping it tight & hitting them on the break’ scenario certainly comes into play.
At the Euros they left a lot of space behind once we had gone 1 up, in fact they had done so before Rambo scored - he should have had a first half hat-trick if I remember rightly.

We should have battered Turkey, Ramsey missed chances, Bale missed a penalty, we were genuinely quite sloppy when it came to finishing in that match. I really think we can put ourselves in the driving seat for qualification over the next two games but at the same time I'm only too aware of what we're capable of!

I’ve mentioned before that 4 points from these two matches with the win coming against Turkey would be a brilliant outcome.

We battered them on everything but the scoreline, they weren't in the game at all and it made a mockery of the "dark horse" tag they'd been given

Anyone know if they have any key players missing? I’ve seen Soyucu is unavailable.
Also any on a yellow card tonight that could mean they miss Monday game?

Big changes needed. Lockyer walks into that side, just gutted he's not available. We did look somewhat better with Davies at CB, and I'd say anything is better than Rodon right now. Mepham was poor but perhaps without Rodon next to him he might improve
Ward Connor-Mepham-Davies-Neco Morrell-Ampadu Brooks-Ramsey-DJ Brennan
There's lots of negatives to talk about but I did think Brooks gave us something we're missing. Kieffer suffering from a lack of games, so get Brennan up there on the break and Brooks/DJ playing off him. Nothing to lose now, have to be bold and go for it. Must win game. The biggest focus needs to be a clean sheet after the worst defensive performance since Belarus. At least against Belarus we could blame James Lawrence, no excuse for Mepham & Rodon
Although Lawrence never returned after Belarus, I think we might have to be thinking about Rodon in the same way! Sad state of affairs to say that about a player who made such a difference when he first came on the scene. But he's gone backwards at a rate of knots

I must add that Connor is lucky we probably need Davies at CB otherwise I'd be saying Neco in for him. Thought he gave Zelaryan way too much space tonight

Conor Roberts offers nothing and has not offered much for the last 12 months.
I will watch the Turkey match but why? It feels like a 100:1 shot to get a win and a 10:1 shot at best to get a draw. I wish I was a casual fan - the late 90s, 00s and early 10s were enough for a lifetime!

On paper then while we don't look awful we do look pretty average and unfortunately we do not have a team of fighters like you always get with Scotland, Northern and Republic of Ireland. I really hate the pathetic moaning by players and coaches - they should just man up and do their fighting through competing more forcefully and playing football

As bad as tonight was it shows we can be more defensively solid. In hindsight I think Rodon has been on borrowed time for a while. Without him maybe we have a chance. I have faith we can score a goal but not feeling too optimistic about a clean sheet after tonight

Quite frankly I find it quite pathetic

Now that the dust has settled a little, let’s have a go at picking a team for Monday. It was extremely frustrating to see how tactically inept we were last night, the game was crying out for somebody to sit in the middle of the park and pick up the loose balls, they seemed to have so much time. However, Morrell showed he is clearly not that player, unfortunately too small and weak and not technically good enough.
Ward
Neco Mepham Rodon (there’s a player there, just had no confidence) Cabango Davies
Ampadu (he has to just sit in the middle of the park, there’s nobody better at the minute)
Wilson Ramsey (I would maybe give somebody else a go, but can’t see him being dropped)
Brooks Johnson
Noteable absences-
James- just not good enough on the ball, does so much off it, but his quality is so bad. Roberts- doesn’t appear to offer anything, defensively poor and no quality up top.

Ramsey as a holding midfielder has never worked.
It didn’t work in Qatar. It didn’t work last night to disastrous effect. And it’ll never work. It’s not his game.
Could have driven the international space station through our midfield. Armenia spotted that after about 15 mins. Every time they robbed us of possession, they scored.

Ward Roberts Mepham Cabango Davies Neco Ampadu Morrell Brooks James Ramsey
We need to be ruthless and show that poor performances will lose you your place. Unfortunately our squad is awful so some have to keep their place. Would be temptwd to throw Hennessey in too.

I’m not sure if replacing Ward with Hennessey achieves much, unless Wayne marshals the defence better, which is possible.
Apart from cutting out a low cross when we were still 1-0 up, I can’t recall Ward having another save to make all game.

As poor as we were we have to hold our hands up and say they were ruthlessly clinical. That Ranos is going to be a star for them, 4 goals in 2 appearances at the age of 19. I think Ward or Hennessey couldn't have prevented any of those goals to be honest

I personally feel that changing the formation won't do much. We looked wide open at the World Cup with a back 5. The common theme between then and last night is that Mepham/Rodon were starting, and Ampadu, Ramsey & Wilson were starting
I wanted Ramsey to start last night in that role and play a disciplined role as our captain. Unfortunately he has shown he is incapable of doing that, so I think we have to bring Morrell in, and take Rodon out
Ward Connor-Mepham-Davies-Neco Morrell-Ampadu Brennan-Ramsey-DJ Bradshaw
The team I picked last night contained Brooks but obviously he probably isn't ready to start. Bradshaw is a hard worker so I think let's give him his chance. Hopefully Morrell-Ampadu gives us the stability we saw against Croatia & Latvia, and I'm not convinced by Davies at CB because it's a gamble but at this point it's just time to roll the dice
Connor is lucky that we need Davies at CB and don't have another decent RB. If Regan Poole was in the squad I'd start him at RB instead. Half tempted to say Fox at LB & Neco at RB but it's just never going to happen and is probably too much change

It was more because I see them as equal and could send a shock wave through everyone. I do feel more comfortable with Hennessey, but Ward has more years in him in this squad.

Our best hope is a 5 back 3 in the middle of the park with Brennan and James up top to hit on the break. Id probably go for: Ward Roberts-Mepham-Cabango-Davies-Neco Morell-Ampadu-Ramsey/Wilson James-Brennan
Can always bring on Brooks if we need to score a goal.

Pretty obvious Page will probably play the exact same formation with someone like Bradshaw instead of Moore.
