If that’s a big player through there like Messi or even Gareth Bale I believe that’s a penalty. There was contact.

I’ll never forgive Scotland for Dave Phillips joke handball. I was there as a broken hearted 9 year old. Joe Jordan before my time but yeah.

There was clear contact which took the Scottish forward off his feet and therefore a penalty.
However, the Scottish forward after this contact was in the process of pulling the defenders shirt to try and engineer a penalty which is why the Hungarian player fell down.
Tierney, Patterson, Hickey, Ferguson, Anderson, Doak, Dykes and Brown were all missing for this critical game. Add those back in and Scotland win tonight and go through.
Hungary relying on the counter-attack when they need a win more than Scotland? That is commitment to a game plan over 90+10 mins and fair play to them.
Scotland really are the reverse of Switzerland who yet again have progressed from the group stages. What an inspiration they are for all the smaller-medium sized nations right now.

Most fans around Europe will already have forgotten that we got knocked out in the Play-Offs, whereas Scotland are seen as perennial failures. So I think the former. I am happy in the knowledge that no Scotsman has ever had the experience that I had in 2016.

You can't just run full pelt, immediately stop and get bundled over by a defender not expecting you to stop and get a penalty. They haven't given them for years. If you influence the contact you won't get the penalty, same as when people would move their leg unnaturally to get the contact. Their keeper put their striker in hospital with no penalty. I think keepers get far too much protection. If they wipe out an opponent but get a fingernail on the ball the strikers get nothing.

But financially as a football association, as fans and players for the hope and experience, it's much better to be there.

Apart from the suspicion of offside which I've not seen mentioned in the media, Armstrong seemed more pre-occupied with the defender than with getting a shot on goal. Must admit as a neutral not too unhappy that their brand of football has left the competition! Unbelievable that 'even' our 2020 Euros record is better than anything they've ever achieved.

I'm not blaming him entirely for the incident, but it was a poor and strange decision to venture that much off his line when there were a number of defenders approaching the ball.

In 2016 there was one third placed team who progress beyond last sixteen.
In 2020 that increased to three teams.
If asked to bet now I would suggest one team, but Portugal were third best third placed team and won in 2016 then Ukraine were fourth best and progressed in 2020.

I don't know what anyone sees in Southgate drudgery, Slovenia although not creating much kept the ball well and deserved the draw, Slovenia smaller than us only 2.2 million population.

The boring bastards still top the group and are on the easier side of the draw, missing Germany Spain France and Portugal It’s amazing how often this works out for them. They have been the tournament’s most unconvincing group winners, yet results elsewhere conspire to give them almost a free ride. Unsurprisingly they never seem to acknowledge their good fortune. Look at the last Euros, a combination of Covid & the semis & final being played in England presented them with a ‘home run’ when everyone else was forced to trek around Europe. Having said all of that, if they end up facing the Dutch they may come unstuck.

Why did the bloke on ITV say that England could face one of 7 opponents? That doesn't make sense. I thought it was either the Dutch or one of three teams in group E?
Can't believe only one of France, Germany, Portugal or Spain are going to make the final. That's the four best teams in the tournament. It's a bit shite.

That being said whoever gets to the final from that side of the draw is very likely to win it IMO. They will be battle hardened by that point France don't really look to be firing on all cylinders so I'd expect one of Spain/Portugal/Germany to win it

"Southgate's men will face the Dutch, who finished third in Group D, unless the Czech Republic beat Turkey or Georgia are victorious against Portugal in Group F."
They will then play the winner of Italy vs Switzerland in the quarters
Their semi would then likely be easier than the quarter on paper if they get there. I wouldn't be surprised to see them lose to the Netherlands or Italy/Switzerland though to be honest
