Good, I think that makes us 31st in the European rankings, which puts us in pot 4 at this moment. Pot 3 or above is a must.

^ Pot 4 yes but not through ranking. The Euros are based on coefficients. In order to get to pot 3 I suspect we'd need to be unbeaten in all our competitive games, maybe even qualify.

I think its a bit of a farce if truth be told- there are 50 odd teams in UEFA so having 24 qualify is pretty much half and that is narrowed down further when you take out the un-competitive sides like San Marino and Malta.
So it would be nice to qualify but I suspect that some of the shine will be taken off for me personally when I consider that most teams worth their salt (and some that aren't!) will get through.
Even more depressing is the fact that this could be the last chance we get to qualify for a true Euro finals, it seems no-one fashionable is interested in hosting the competition anymore, so I can see this other farce about playing games all over Europe being here to stay for the next few Euro championships at least.

Disagree. The standard of European football is so high that it will still be an excellent championship.

Regardless of whether it is 16 or 24 you are still playing the top teams in your confederation in predominantly neutral venues in short succession. Compare that to a qualifying double header every few months or the odd meaningless friendly and there's no negatives about it at all.

I wonder how much higher we would have gone with a draw against Croatia (who are now 4th)
We really need to get a June friendly with someone on the slide just above us in the rankings (like Scotland were)
Hopefully we can pick up 7 or 8 points in our last 4 games which should see us move higher

Interesting that we are only 30 places off Brazil (19th) When was the last time we could say that? Under Yorath 20 years ago?

Brilliant. Matches have to be played when this season is completed. If they are not it may return to bite us on the ass when groups are drawn in terms of seeding.

I feel that the games against Austria, Scotland and Croatia has won over quite a few Coleman sceptics over. I was at Hampden and loved it. I was out of the country for the Croatia game and it sounds as though the future is getting more exciting all of the time.

It probably would have been even higher if the FAW got off their fat corporate arses and sorted out a couple of games this month.
Still good news though.

The rankings are utter nonsense and have been ever since they switched to a four-year system rather than an eight-year one. A six-year system would have been a more sensible move.
The fact we're currently doing well in them is irrelevant.

lucky we only dropped 6 places Lucky, but mainly because of our poor record under Toshack in 2009. The matches with Montenegro (lost -1-2) and Russia (lost 1-3) dropped off our ranking total this month. In October, the 1-2 defeat in Finland will disappear, but then so will the 2-0 win in Lichtenstein. We really need a win over Macedonia to stop ourselves falling down the rankings. Obviously the biggest chance to boost the ranking would be a win in Belgium. In November,, the 3-0 win over Scotland will disappear. Note to FAW: organise a November friendly; the world ranking points may be vital.

Wales up 8 places to 44 in World rankings Amazing how useful a draw against a top ten side is in terms of our world ranking! Imagine if we'd sneaked a winning goal... Need to follow this up with a win over Finland.

Our "points total" goes down even if we beat Finland and if we lose it plummets, so pot 3 is not an option but pot 5 might be.

Hopefully we win PERIOD but I would hate to lose and for there to have been a possibility that had we done nothing, we could have snuck into pot 4. On balance, right thing to do but just hoping we do not some Welsh luck.

We'll lose points gained from the 2009 friendly versus Scotland, yes, but if we beat Finland won't that compensate? And isn't the past year's results weighted more heavily than the results gained 4 years ago?

How many of the teams around us in the rankings have organised two friendlies for November?

Go on the FIFA website and you can put in the various results against Finland and it gives you the total points Current 634 Win 600 Draw 574 Loss 559 Hopefully I have done this wrong
