Depends who we play and who others play doesn't it? I meant our maximum points (not ranking) available would likely be after Bosnia rather than Andorra. As you say, we can't control what other teams do. I was just pointing out that 2 wins would give us 1255 points, which in July's rankings, would have been enough for 3rd in the world. I am too lazy to work out the permutations for the teams currently above us come September. As alarch said after this month these rankings won't mean a thing in terms of seeding or anything for over two years so I wouldn't worry too much about it, just enjoy being 10th, if we can go higher then great but it's not going to impact us immediately whatever happens.

Are we the highest ranked team not to have qualified for a tournament since the rankings started in December '92?

Are we the highest ranked team not to have qualified for a tournament since the rankings started in December '92? Montenegro were higher than we presently are for a brief period and have never qualified for anything if I recall correctly, I'll just check that. Actually, having just checked, they were 16th in June 2011. You may be right.

We'll find out our 'true' European ranking at the Euros next summer.
My suspicion is that we are now one of the best teams in Europe.

Well, just looking, we're going to move ahead of the Netherlands without even playing a game it seems in the next rankings, so we'll be 9th next time around.

I mean, Belgium have been considered the 2nd best team in Europe (behind only Germany) by FIFA for a little while now. And they've been unable to beat us the last three times we've played (all competetive games, two of them in Belgium)

Does anyone know if games played exactly 12 months before the rankings come out are depreciated or not? For example, the September 3rd. On September 3rd 2014 England beat Norway in a friendly. Does this get depreciated in the September rankings, or the October rankings?

That's what got me thinking about it. I've been trying to find it on the FIFA website, but its not exactly clear on the depreciation part of the rankings

I think it would still fall under the most recent 12 months, I'll check when I get home. My calculations indicate that we will go above them in the rankings released 3rd September

If more than one calculation is coming up with the same outcome, its likely to be spot on I was curious where it works out that they drop the points, and the original question is something I've been trying to work out for a while

Their match on 3/9/14 would still be counted as the last 12 months. I had a discrepancy when calculating England's ranking for June, it turned out that my formula had discounted their match on 4/6/11 (June 2015 rankings were released on the 4th).
I have September as Wales 1145.58 (1146) and England 1142.82 (1143).

Will be interesting to see how high we climb back up the rankings after 3 wins
Northern Ireland and Slovakia were both ranked higher than us so we should pick up a mass of points

Think FIFA next table is published 14 July. Probably looking at Top 15 based on the current results

I'd say a win over Belgium on Friday could push us nearer the top 10.

We already have the World Cup qualifying draw, we would need a strong campaign to maintain the levels to really take advantage. Happy to see us high don't get me wrong, just not that valid for another 2 years.

If I've worked it out correctly, as it stands...
•if we were to lose on Friday it will leave us as either 13th or 14th (depending on Poland's result - they would need a win to go above us)
•if we draw we will be 13th, or 12th (above England) if we got to penalties and lost
•if we win, it all goes up in the air as there would be another game bringing up a new set of possibilities, along with results from the other games

Surely our UEFA coefficient is more important looking forward to the next Euro qualifying draw? The FIFA ranking is only now of use if we qualify for the WC in 2018. I know when we were flying high in the world rankings our UEFA ranking was still pretty low, but presumably should be on the up?

I know when we were flying high in the world rankings our UEFA ranking was still pretty low, but presumably should be on the up? Your right. Football seeding have the current EUFA ranking standings cleared ready for the next cycle - the world cup qualifiers, but not yet including these euro finals. It now shows us 21st. I think we rise to 13th if we go out on Friday I think well go up to 13th or so.
its an odd table though. Russia top followed by England, France below Gibralter. It all makes perfect sense - honest. Russia are top having had the points for qualifying doubled, they now can't earn anymore as they don't play qualifiers. England 10 out of 10 wins in the qualifiers. France currently show no points in the current cycle as they played no qualifiers. They'll get a lump of points for the current finals when they get added and I think the next set of qualifying game count twice.

BUMP.
That win over Belgium - 2nd in the world and with a nice big tournament multiplier - must do us a world of good!

Bookies have Portugal roughly evens and us roughly 3/1. Then bookies still haven't learned their lesson regarding Wales. ;-)

I don't think those rankings are set yet, as there are still 5 teams to play before the rankings come out which brings other possibilities, but by my workings we cannot drop lower than 11th now
