5 Live Sport, see below: news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/9060364.stmManchester City striker Craig Bellamy has hinted to BBC Radio 5 live that Manchester United were interested in signing him before the last transfer deadline. The 31-year-old Welshman admits it would have caused a "stir" had the move come off and accepts a switch to Old Trafford would have caused consternation amongst City fans. "If I had said I wanted to go there for one minute, staying [at Eastlands] would have been really tough," said Bellamy. "It would have been a miracle if it had come off." It would have been a bold move by Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson to snaffle a player from United's rivals but is there any truth to Bellamy's claims? United officials say not but you can listen to the full interview with Bellamy on Tuesday's 5 live Sport from 2000 BST. Bellamy, who eventually signed a year-long loan deal for hometown club Cardiff City, also talks about the reasons why his Manchester City career nose-dived after Roberto Mancini took over as manager and why he thinks people who talk about loyalty in football are misguided.

Bellamy is 31, his knees are shot. He's been world class at times but now is the time to call it a day. He cannot go on from this point in a ''picking and choosing'' fashion.
Or put it another way, he's good but not that good he can change results or make ''the'' difference.
Over to you Craig, grow some balls and make the decision.

I don't know why we think all of a sudden that we don't need Bellamy. Only a few months ago he single-handedly destroyed Luxembourg. We need him, and last night adds more weight of evidence.

Thats why he should be ashamed of himself for not helping out his country last night. Two weeks ago he was our talisman, now because of what happened last week he is a traitor. Problem is no-one has given us a proper explanation of why he pulled out.

Well, for all those who said Bellamy let his country down by not making himself available for Wales in the last 2 matches, he wasn't able to play for Cardiff City today either. For those people who think that Dave Jones is plotting against Wales, he must be plotting against himself also, presumably. ;D

I'm not having a go at him, nor saying I would like to see him go, but it must be odds on now. We won't qualify for the Euros, the World Cup qualifying campaign is two years away and the competition itself - should we qualify - another 18 months. He's no longer at a club where he'll be a bit part player, Dave Jones will want him to play as many games as possible, so will certainly want him to retire from internationals. While Bellamy clearly knows his own mind, the odds are stacking up. Would it be that bad a thing? In the short-term, yes, clearly. He's one of our very few top class players. But in the longer term it will give more game time to those with the job of trying to replace him. Thoughts?

Sorry bellamyforever, but I think welsho might have a point. Wouldn't suprise me at all if England at the Mill is his swansong.

Sorry to offend Bellamyforever, like I say I don't mean to have a go, I think his commitment over the years has been outstanding and put many other players to shame. But his injury situation is no secret. Don't think him reading my half-baked opinions will make a difference!

Bellamy retiring? I would hope not.
He has always been so committed to Wales - I never envisaged him retiring before the end of his club career.
Hopefully, his missing the Bulgaria and Switzerland games was a blip.

I still think that something's not right. If Bellamy wasn't fit, why did he play against Barnsley? I think that he's been left out of the squad today to try and appease Cardiff fans who may have been disappointed that Bellamy didn't play for Wales as well as the Welsh media generally. I certainly don't think this is Dave Jones suddenly becoming benign.

Spot on I've said similar on another thread ie the last round of matches have retired Bellamy.

Problem is we have a dearth of strikers. Would be nice for him to carry on as these kids now need to be involved in a winning team - and having him there would make that more possible. Agree with the general point though, also wouldn't surprise me if he retired. But at least he has a decent excuse with his knee

i think it's because Cardiff have mapped out which games he can play for them, and this was one that they felt happy for him to miss - given that they are playing in midweek (i think).
honestly, i don't think it changes a thing from our point of view.

i understand where you're coming from but i cant agree..nobody should be retiring, you say it would give us time to replace him but i see no replacement of bellamy's quality in our ranks
your country retires you not the other way around,it's shameful how the modern day footballer treats the international scene

I would be gutted if he retired and then played on for 3-5 years like giggs. would be like a dagger. I hoped he would surpass garys speeds outfield cap record, no doubt bale will anyways..

Could be a rummor starter here, but maybe the FAW invoked the fifa rule, of not letting bellamy play for his club as he didnt turn up for us,
but i probably think as chopra and co were back , dave jones didnt want more welsh public on his back and just rested him to avoid that.

Time will tell , and i am not deluded briann flynn fan, just we do actually need world class players, if you know what i mean... sure heck steve morrison isnt going to fire us to world cup 2014 , it has to be Craig. fingers crossed, as i reckon if he was to surpass speeds record, then we would be far better off with him than without / and far better off with a qualification shout.

I have heard that Man City sacked a physio of theirs last year, and Bellamy is now paying him out of his own pocket so he has his own personal physio. He is taking the advice of this guy and making sure his knee does not get any worse. He will be missing games for both club and country until he retires from football altogether, but I doubt he would ever say he is quitting Wales before this.
