The concern is that too much emphasis on building for the future could see us start to struggle, drop down the rankings and then find it harder to qualify than it has been in the last 10 years. I'd rather call up a 29/30 year old Championship regular playing well than a youngster that's not ready yet. 29/30 is a great age for a defender, a lot of defenders come into their own at that age, a perfect balance of experience and physical condition. Agree 100%

Really hope that Ben comes through. Whenever I saw Owen Beck last year, I really thought he was the next big thing for us. Got injured at the turn of the year, but now back playing in the Liverpool u21.

Great to learn that Ben has got back to fitness a little sooner than anticipated. Cymru needs him for June!
He was on the bench for Spurs against Newcastle yesterday - had he been on from the start, he would have made a better job in shoring up their sleepy defence than those who were (allegedly) present!
Noticeable that a few of the Toon's goals came from the side of the field that Ben or Lenglet - who has also been on the injury list - would normally have been guarding.

My fear is that Ben has been brought back too early from his injury although I expect he will play in the next game and the remaining fixtures after the disaster at Newcastle yesterday, which proved conclusively how crucial he has been to the Spurs defence, and because of his dedication to his club which is total, as proved under Mourinho when he played whilst injured which resulted in him having a prolonged period of recovery.

Looks like he'll be our left back in the next set of games. Wouldn't put it past Neco to make a recovery just yet. Seen others suggesting that the healing process is typically around 6 weeks. Might just about make it. But yeah, Davies wouldn’t be aabad replacement!

Good to see Spurs keep a clean sheet the other day, with a fit-again Ben (+ Lenget and Royal) back to shore up their shaky defence.
Hopefully, Ben stays injury-free for what remains of the PL season - as we will need his calmness and leadership for our qualifiers in June.

It's amazing to me that we came out of those first two games with 4 points without Brennan and Davies (and Davies's understudy), and people were still complaining!

Had a game to forget for Spurs against Brentford yesterday.. outpaced by Bryan Mbuemo for two of Brentford's goals. Wonder if he's actually fully fit after the lengthy spell he had on the sidelines?
May well be dropped for the last Spurs game of the season next week (vs Leeds), I shouldn't wonder.
** Get in some sprinting practice before the Armenia game, Ben!

For one of those goals it was just a really well timed run by Mbeumo, Ben moved inside as he was supposed to once Mbeumo clearly had the momentum, and the only reason he then scored is because the middle CB Lenglet was REALLY slow in covering across which is his job in that situation The whole point of having 3 CBs is that you cover for one another in certain scenarios, so imo that one goes down as Lenglet's fault Overall not the best performance tho from Davies or Spurs as a whole. Going to be a turbulent time there as they have a lot of issues to address. I think whoever manages them next will be looking to prioritise other areas than LCB which Davies is adept at

In Ben's defence he was made to look at fault but was left exposed to what Brentford could exploit down his side, and yet that happened more down Spurs right side , so the setup by Mason got found out and punished, Spurs are a mess.

If this was pre-planned and Ben was always going to stay behind with his partner as the baby is due, why was it not said at the start of camp instead a "shock pullout"? This has now caused a response similar to your comment in reference to the mass drop outs we have had in the Gould/Hughes/Tosh eras. But if known, then its acceptable I supppose depending on the circumstances, since its Ben Davies, and I hope it all goes well for them. I find it all bizarre the noise coming out of the FAW at the moment. I feel the comments from Page at the moment are quite strange. Its almost like a manager under-pressure at club level losing it and on the brink of having the "vote of confidance"

The other point is that if it was known in advance, why doesn't have the squad have more cover than a below 100% Neco and an uncapped player who's just been released by Stoke?

I don't like any of it, it doesn't sit right with me as in I don't 100% believe it all. Why announce it so late with no real 100% reliable cover?

Why announce it so late with no real 100% reliable cover? we have cover in Neco He's having a baby of course its legit, would you expect him to travel if his partner was about to gove birth These always leave these until last minute to not give your opponent an edge or giveaway your game plan too early.

Last game of pre-season and Ben Davies starts as a CB for Spurs in a back 4! Very interesting!

Good news for us if successful. Lot of talk about Spurs bringing in new centre halves but as he's done before, wouldn't be surprised if Ben stays in the frame through his professionalism, work ethic and consistency. One of the few members of our squad who club managers seem to love!

Neco has shown he can do a job at LB and hopefully RND is back soon so that we have a couple of options to facilitate that

I know I sound like a stuck record and I hate that I'm often thinking this way but Giggs would have done something like that, he wouldn't have put up with the crap we got served up in the last two games. I've long wanted Davies in an organised defence as one of two or three centre backs, I think his calmness is great for us there, I'm sick of Rodon now,

Davies obviously won't be the bombing LB that Postecoglu wants, and so if there was ever a time for him to shift in-field it's this season. Fingers crossed Postecoglu sticks with him all the way, and if he does that should be his new position for us imo

I’d have Neco and RND ahead of Ben at Lb now, and hedges if LWB. I agree BD should play Cb for us imo, I’d go 3-5-2 rcb: Lockyer/Mepham with cb:Ampadu and lcb:Davies.
Ward Lockyer Amps Davies CR Sheehan Morrell RND Rambo Brennan James

Fingers crossed Postecoglu sticks with him all the way, and if he does that should be his new position for us imo I don't think these comments will stand the test of time unfortunately. From a quick check, no one had anything good to say about his performance at CB on the weekend - quite the opposite. On the few occasions he has played as a CB in a back 4, it's been disastrous. As I understand it, Spurs are in the process of signing other CBs for big money moves (at least 1, potentially 2 just had their medicals), so I assume playing Davies there was more of a stop gap measure than the beginning of transitioning him into an out and out CB. I'd love it if that transition did happen as it would solve a significant issue for us. But I'm very sceptical. Any suggestion of playing Davies at LCB and Neco at LB in a back 4 is complete madness in my view and would make our defence against Armenia look like Mourinho's peak Chelsea side by comparison!

Ward Lockyer Amps Davies CR Sheehan Morrell RND Rambo Brennan James I'd probably go for that formation too, but with Meps or Rodon in for Sheehan. He hasn't done anything in recent seasons to justify a starting place. I'd love to have Ampadu at the back and did much prefer him there, but it looks like he's going to be Leeds' main man in midfield this season and he’s been performing brilliantly there throughout pre season and in yesterday's game. So given our weakness there, and with Ampadu finally due to play there week in week out for his club side, it makes little sense to move him back at this point

i know its one game, but Ampadu bossed the midfield for Leeds. Our depth at centre back is far greater than our current midfield options... he has to be our main man in midfield going forward.
