Played eighty five mins last night in Pre Season against Blackpool. Looked very accomplished, defensively and getting forward. Wales U19 player. I hope he gets match time in the Cup competitions this season or Laudrup sends him out on loan to get experience under his belt in the Championship or League 1 and yep Llanerch he's a left back! www.swanseacity.net/team/player-profile/index.aspx?playerid=470007&tcmuri=17745

Great to see him come on for the last few minutes yesterday for Swansea, and look so composed. Hopefully Laudrup will give him a few more chances to ease his way in.
Quick question: when did a Welsh player last come through at a premier league club to establish himself as a premier league player?
(All our current established prem players came though at a lower level: Bellamy, Bale, Rambo, Collins, Taylor, Allen, Williams etc.... Collison I wouldn't quite call an established prem player yet)
Considering that Giggs came through pre-premier league, I'm struggling to think of any!

It's a funny thing, but I can't think of any! Not in the past 20 years, since Giggs. Our players tend to come through at championship/lower league clubs now. But hopefully Swansea can establish themselves in the EPL and this will change.

I think its a blessing that so many of our players had the opportunity to learn the ropes at smaller clubs before moving upwards. If they had signed up as kids with one of the big guns they could easily have sunk in to obsurity like so many talented lads in the academy system.
The last player to really excel from a very young age and break through in the prem was probably Matthew Jones before injuries aborted his progress.

Which is why I'm not getting exciting about this Huws kid at Man City. The chances of him establishing himself there are miniscule really. You have to wonder if he's have been better off satying at Swansea. After all, it didn't seem to do Joe Allen's development as a top class defensive midfielder any harm, did it? Matthew Jones never really established himself as a premier league player( largely due to injuries and a poor attitude... he had the talent) so I wouldn't count him in for this. The last ones I can think of who came through at established top flight clubs to become established top flight players are Giggs (early 90s), Hughes (mid 80s) and Kevin Ratcliffe (early 80s)... all pre-premier league. Which shows you just how rare it is really.

So Davies has overtaken Richards and Obeng in the pecking order?

Looking at the highlights again and this deserves a thread in its own right. At the time I thought the Ben Davies pass to put Ramsey one-on-one with the goalie was a fluky clearance-turned-wonder-pass. Looking at it again, and Davies clearly looks up before delivering the pass. Had Ramsey scored (and he should have) we would have been talking about Davies' pass in the same breath as Bodin's to Rush against Germany all those years ago. The only difference was that Rush scored. Davies deserves to retain his place on that pass alone.

agreed and your reference to it being like bodins to Rush is also spot on. I would add though that tonight is all about defensive duties first any forward efforts secondary.

It proper caught the Scots defence out and shows that we should not be scared of playing an early ball. At times we have been reluctant to hit the opposition quickly, favouring the slowly slowly approach. We need to mix this up, I feel our best chance of a result tonight will come from long balls to bale and Davies- I suspect the Croatians will not be expecting this and will be more comfortable nullifying our efforts to pass through the midfield.

We need to be a bit more pragmatic tonight and this thread is relevant.
Concentrate on defence - two banks of four - a couple of decent balls over the top to Bale to run on to and maybe..........................

I agree with a mixed approach - and all credit to Coleman the more flexible approach paid dividends against the Scots. We should certainly be looking for opportunities to break quickly, balls over the top and threaded through balls for Bale to run onto. Mind you hoofed balls to Morison/Davies should be used sparingly - as I doubt it will work well (definitely not against the Scots).
We should also persist with trying to pass the ball out much of the time. What we must not do is drop too deep. This will make it impossible to pass the ball out - or hoof the ball for that matter, as the support won't be there for that to work. Dropping back to the halfway line would be OK, but not much deeper.

Coleman is apparently considering Bale in a central role tonight which is something that has been raised here in the past.

Remember the Italy game and how she'll shocked nests and cannavaro were having to deal with the balls in to Hartson. As long as they reach our front man (bale could play that role as well as Davies) I think that will catch them off guard.

There's nothing wrong with long balls if they're played into space for players to run on to. It's the hit-and-hope ball, or the easy ball up to the lone striker that we should keep to the minimum. Just hitting it long to relieve pressure is futile - as it will just lead to another wave of attacks.

Considering he's only 19 and has only handful of pro games under his belt, I thought he was excellent again tonight.

I thought he was poor personally, offered little resistance to all the crosses that we're coming in and had a howler that lead to the 2nd goal. Should have been ricketts at rb, he's been a tough opponent to quality wingers on his time. Easy to say in hindsight admittedly.

Good arguement for Ricketts to be in before Davies, Gunter and Matthews!

was excellent today for the Swans vs Chelsea. He's very much been chucked in at the deep end, but he seems up to it. Considering hardly any of us had even heard of him a few months back (has he even played for the U21's??) his rise has been very impressive.
Keep it going Ben.

He looked out of his depth against Croatia (not that he was alone in that). Would prefer Ricketts to be ahead of him in the Wales pecking order.

It is a good lesson for football in general that,as Taylor was in jured the day after the transfer window was closed, Swansea had to throw a local rookie into the first team and have discovered a real gem.
