Does anyone else think that Joe Morrell wouldn't look out of place in a side like Swansea? Been at 4 or 5 lower league clubs now and doesn't seem to fit. I think he is definitely one who could do with a spell abroad.

Belgium seems like an obvious choice for me if he's to go abroad, either there or Holland.

Page loved him and now he’s on the bench when our best midfielder has been out injured ?? Crying out for someone like Morrell to break up the play, keep the ball ffs! Have long been a fan of his, had many a discussion on here when people have dissed him, he does the simple things which it has to be said very few today could manage. still allen would probably start ahead of Morrell in MD3, becoz Morrell hasnt played much himself. I would be happy to see them both starting though. really miss the allen+ ledley…

Considering that we were so light in midfield I'm really surprised we didn't see more of him. Against both USA and England he did the defensive side well (as he often does) but was also pretty fearless in showing for the ball and in keeping possession under pressure.
People get hung up on the level he plays in his club career, but he always does what we ask of him.

He was tidy enough when he came on. He's never going to come on and turn a game on his head but he can help provide a foundation for more creative players to make things happen, it's all about how you use him. I like and rate Joe, I think at the right club he'd flourish.

A shambles he didn’t start the first 2 games.

I've slated Joe in the past but will hold my hands up, he's shut me up. Genuinely if he was a couple of inches taller he'd have been one hell of centre back I reckon reminds me a lot of Gary Medel

He has massive underdog appeal with me, I just don't understand how someone who has it in him to be so tidy on the ball is messing around in League One after struggling to get on the pitch in the Championship.

I've always rated him, he's never let us down.
Still don't understand why Page played him every single game not long ago but now he seems dropped despite other playing worse. But that's Page for you.

The funny thing is that he's recently been displaced at League One level too, which is bizarre because he's always brilliant for us. Would like to see him start more games in the future
If only we could call up the bloke who took his place at Pompey....oh wait! We can!

Granted Thompson has been injured recently but both appeared to be ahead of him at one stage.

And when our best CDM Joe Allen was injured, he dropped Morrell (the most like for like replacement) and let Ampadu do all the work on his own, bloody bonkers.

Said it in our workplace that he should have started EVERY match in this WC and everybody scoffed!!! - he helped got us to Euro 2021 with his passing qualities and energy!! - very underrated player - never gives the ball away! - he links the play also (does the work a bit like Joe Ledley) in Euro 2016 - crying shame as he would have sat in the middle of midfield in this World Cup and given the ball to Dan James, Bale, Moore do give us a chance - wasted opportunity in this tournament!!

Idiotic mate. Ampadu Morrell anchoring with Rambo in front of them; it’s obvious ffs. Did we make use of our subs enough? Could’ve given Mark Harris a game , at least he runs the channels and stretches opposition/boost of energy.

Lowery looks decent - he was called up to a Wales training camp before the Euros wasn’t he? Had a bit of a shocker last year because of a contract dispute and Crewe were relegated. Getting decent game time and reports. Also, Thompson had a lot of promise early on but has had his career ruined by injury. He’s viewed as an important player for Pompey, but broke his leg at the start of the season.

5 league starts for Lowery so far this season, has he been injured or waiting for his chance?

I'll preface what I have to say by saying I've not actually watched him play. However, here is what I know... When we first discovered his eligibility he was at Crewe in League One. He was talked about on DS as a player who had scalability to international football due to his skill-set of being a ball playing midfielder. He was one to keep an eye on at that time Then he went through a contract dispute with Crewe in pre-season in 2021 and as a result he was demoted to the U21s. Crewe then started sliding down the table, and Lowery was re-introduced as it became clear they were in a relegation battle Lowery then left at the end of the season and was snapped up by Pompey. Recently he has displaced Morrell in their starting XI playing the last 7 games, and Pompey are currently 7th in League One We really should be watching out for him because if he continues to play regularly he's certainly playing at the same standard as Smith/Morrell/Levitt, and perhaps he'll be one of these who just takes to international football. He's still only 24 as well, so plenty of football ahead for him

Was Morrell being managed for his injury prior to the World Cup? I seem to remember someone posting an article on here where the Pompey manager said he was easing Morrell back?

I've always rated him, he's never let us down. Still don't understand why Page played him every single game not long ago but now he seems dropped despite other playing worse. But that's Page for you. There's no inconsistency. He was usually playing when we had other players out and when we were playing a midfield 2. Page went with a midfield of one holding and two number 8s at certain points towards the end of the WC qualifiers (second half against Czech and the games against Estonia and Belarus), with Ramsey and Wilson playing in front of Allen. He did the same against Austria and went with the same approach in the first two WC games, but with Ampadu in place of Allen. The only time he did seem to be first choice was in the last Euros where I think he started all four games and was very poor to be honest. So there's again a risk of revisionism creeping in here.

Pretty sure you've been saying for a while, well before Page started doing it, that you would like to see Wilson in midfield and that's where he played. We played with one anchor against Austria and second half against Czech, which are arguably up there with our best performances in recent years. I'm pretty sure no one had Morrell in their starting lineups before the world cup. Just seems poor form to come out with this stuff in hindsight and the extent of revisionism going on.

It's a fair point that it's easy to see with hindsight, I just feel that it was obvious in this WC that Ampadu was struggling as a one man midfield and Allen was way off fitness, we needed an extra body and a bit of energy and Joe Morrell was the best option we had for that. Which brings me to my biggest concern, which is that Page and his coaching staff struggle to see what's going wrong during a game and to do something to change it.

Joe came on in the 81st minute and was booked in the 84th minute of today's 0-0 away at Exeter.
By all accounts Pompey's injury problems are coming to an end so the competition for midfield places will increase.

Doesn’t really bode well if they have injury problems and Joe comes on in 81st minute. Done well for Wales but either he steps up or we need to look elsewhere if we are honest.
