We've signed Adam Chapman now. Not the best personal history either.
Good player though.

No effect on welsh football, Newport will never ne more than a league 1 team and should of joined the welsh pyramid especially as the "new" tem had no link to the English league, same applies to Merthyr
That would of been more beneficial to welsh football on the whole

To think we missed that massive opportunity of playing in the WPL. Port Talbot over Port smouth any day of the week for me. We could fluke it into league one but as you say that's as far as it goes. It would be silly to suggest that a Welsh club team, playing in an old stadium in front of a few thousand fans could ever progress out of the lower echelons of the English league system. No Welsh club who's been bankrupt or on the verge of bankruptcy could ever hope to turn it around and make it to the EPL. Could they? No Welsh club side who's been relegated out of the league or saved themselves on the last game of the season could hope to make it to the EPL. Could they? Us County fans have been robbed of the trappings and glory of a 10-nil defeat in the extra/extra/extra preliminary round of the Europa Cup. Haven't we done this discussion mate, don't be a bellend.

They don't have the support and don't have a ground to sustain a higher level of football, and unless the euro millions winners pumps all his money in I can't see things changing.
Raptor, you failed to point out any benefits to welsh football, I understand that going to Portsmouth will be nicer than Port Talbot but still can't see that benefitting the national team.
Also, why would you get hammered 10-0 in the preliminary round? A stronger welsh league with Merthyr and Newport in would improve the standards of our national league, results would probably improve in Europe which will create more opportunities for welsh youngsters, although I appreciate teams like TNS don't have many.

The Welsh league is completely terrible and will never benefit the national team. County playing in the football league alone benefits Welsh football more than the Welsh league entirely. WPL fans moan about the lack of publicity but what are news organisations meant to do? Shit doesn't sell.
County can be more than a league 1 club even though they don't have to be more than league 1 to benefit the national team. The ground has a 10k capacity and county have the potential fan base to sell it out at a higher level.

I'm more of the opinion that the Welsh Premier does little to enhance the Welsh team, and a Welsh club in League Two does little to enhance it either. To what extent do the 23 other teams in League Two enhance their national team?

League 2 teams give youngsters game time at a good level and produce future England stars. Joe Hart is one that springs to mind straight away. I'm sure there are plenty more. The county academy will be improved, facing better opposition, produce better players that will hopefully one day play for Wales.

Who have Newport produced in recent years that have gone on to represent Wales.
Newport don't have the fan base to sell out 10,000 on a regular basis and never did have, Newport like it or not is a rugby city.
Also when I hear people talk about the Newport glory days only one thing gets mentioned and that's the European cup winners cup, not a trip to Grimsby or Woking etc.
The Welsh Premier would be stronger with Newport and Merthyr, two new clubs who I believe should not have been allowed to play in the English Pyramid

Newport haven't produced anyone BECAUSE WE HAVEN'T BEEN IN THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE and haven't been a FL league club for 25+ years!!
Newport isn't a rugby city, its a football city.
Yes, the thing people talk about is the cup winners cup run, which came about from winning the Welsh cup WHILST we were in the FL!!!!!!!!!
The Welsh premier league would not be much better with county & Merthyr, the fanbases + quality of player would drop to terrible lows, much like the 'top' clubs currently in the Welsh crappy terrible premier league.

Please tell me how many Welsh Premier games you've watched to base your scientific opinion upon. Or have you just followed the lead of most Welsh Footabll fans of writing it off as 'crap' without giving it a chance. As a Bangor supporter, I haven't found the standard of football for Wrexham matches to be a million miles better, certainly not worth the £18 to get in as opposed to the £7-£8 you'll find in the national league. In the last 20 years the WPL has produced Mark Delaney, Steve Evans, Owain Tudur Jones and Tom Bradshaw is a regular for the U21's now. Not that shocking.

The reason why Newport are not in the WPL is because the WPL is shite. So shite in fact our crowds would dwindle back to approx 250. Any league produces players over the course of time, it's inevitable. Delaney et al would have come through irrespective. Nobody in Newport wants to join this crock only Nationalists who can't see past the end of their noses. Hey, but it's ok for the big two to play in England. Double standards methinks. I expect the wealth at Newport is bigger than the whole of the WPL combined so please don't drag us down to this shite.

If it all turns out to be on shifting sands - and, hey, Newport wouldn't be the first club to find itself in such a predicament should the sugar daddies get bored - and the club is no longer welcome in the English pyramid the club will probably feel pretty sheepish approaching the WPL for a place.

The point is that no matter what predicament the club is in they still would not join the WPL. I believe the club would fold before going into the Welsh set up as the Welsh set up is so awful. Even in this day and age substitutes have been spotted smoking on the bench. You do get the odd side which would perform well in the Conference South admittedly but other than that it's not much above English County Football standard.

15 years ago, I would defend the WPL to the death. It was labelled as amatuer and a mickey mouse league by the press and armchair critics would had never attended a game. At the end of the day, it was a new league and teams like Barry Town showed that there was so much ambition. I remembered when Barry lost 8-0 away to FC Porto, the Western Mail had a 2 page spread, damning Barry's efforts and made the case for Cardiff City to play in Europe (there was no sporting merit for Cardiff being in the CL, just the fact they were the "biggest club"). But it was the 8-0 defeats against the likes of FC Porto and Dynamo Kiev that were punches that needed to be taken in order for the league to get stronger. For example it was only a matter of time before a club were to get into the group stages of the Champions League (like Bohemians achieved). But these days, the FAW have destroyed the league. There has been no support for the clubs (Rhyl were relegated based on their ground), the development is awful and I now sit in the category where I think the WPL is a joke. Once again, apologies for the lack of paragraphs. I'm on a joke work-PC.

You're welcome to your opinion but I find it extremely odd County fans have never forgotten how the FAW try to pressgang us into the LOW. There's still a lot of hatred toward the Welsh set up. A lot of County fans were used to the Football League and that is where we wanted to get back to, playing in front of 5,000 fans, an occasional cup match against a bigger team. We used to have Aldridge and Tynan up front, we don't want to swap that some park's players. Carrying on kidding yourselves but the WPL is awful and if we played there we would be the main team. We don't want that. I wouldn't watch Newport if they joined the WPL, that would be me finished and I've been going since '77. The WPL is embarrasingly bad. It did look as if it would make progress at one stage but that was shortlived.

I watched a bit of Conference and WPL football on the telly last season, and there's no question that the better sides in the WPL would more than hold their own against the best that the Conference has to offer. Sorry to say, but the times I saw Newport I was very unimpressed. Hoofball of the most retrograde kind, whereas the New Saints, in contrast, play a much more sophisticated brand of football, which showed in their European performances last season.
I don't blame you for wanting Newport to stay in the English pyramid, and all things considered, I think it's better for Welsh teams to play at the highest level available to them, and if the structure that they find themselves in happens to have an English label, its no big deal. But it's a shame that your defence of Newport relies on the very suspect defence of a comparison of the merits of the Conference and the WPL.

The thing is Alarch is that I'm bored to death of non Newport fans doleing out their wisdom in so much as they think we ought to be in the WPL. I agree there are decent sides in the WPL but the standard overall is no more than English County standard. We did play some route one hoofball but it's the no nonsense stuff that gets you in contention in the Conference. The 10- nil defeat that a WPL side suffered against a Finnish side tells us all a story doesn't it. Newport wouldn't lose like that, or Wrexham, or Forest Green, or Dartford.

When people say the FAW doesn't support the WPL, they usually mean they don't hand the clubs their cheque book and tell them to go nuts. Is that what you mean?

I watch a lot of WPL football thanks to S4C and I saw quite a bit of Wrecsam and Newport (and thus other Conference teams) via the channel too. I also joined a Grimsby fan friend at the Play-off game.
The thing that strikes me each time is not so much the quality of play but the type of play. Conference teams seem to be full of athletes who can play a bit. The consequence of have pro footballers I guess.
WPL games tend to be slower with players having more time on the ball. Attacking moves can great one minute but break down with the first attempted pass the next.
As much as I'd like the WPL to progress, I sincerely hope it doesn't mean 11 athletes going at each other.
We 'should' be happy that we have the choice of two different types of games I suppose...?
Bit off-topic. Sorry.

Newport played much more attractive football lower down the English pyramid, as you say, the game is slower. Most players can do most skills, whatever their respective league. Doing it at pace is what seperates the poor from the good and the good from the best.

I still back the WPL, but I couldn't justify saying to anyone that Newport should be in it. We're in a really difficult situation historically in terms of where clubs play. You simply can go further in the English pyramid. It's a bigger market. But we are where we are. Wales is an unusual country.
The bottom line is we have to have a WPL. It was set up to help safeguard our national team's existence. With all things considered, setting it up was absolutely essential and has been worth it. You can get a "different" experience by being a club in the Welsh pyramid. Like Bala qualifying for Europe, for example. It's part of our identity as a European footballing country.
My opinion is that we have to give the WPL a unique branding based on it being a community/grassroots league. We also have to be relaxed about the biggest teams playing in England, as a fact based on history and that Wales has developed in an unusual way as a country next to England.
The S4C coverage really boosts the league as well. I watch most of the televised games and while it's touch and go whether you'll see a decent game, the actual standard with the commentators, camera work etc is really good. I do feel i'm watching more out of loyalty than enjoyment, which is why we need the WPL to have that patriotic/alternative branding.

For the record, I've never argued that Newport should be in the WPL- they have a reasonably decent history in the English pyramid, if they continue to progress they'll get decent enough crowds there too. Methyr and Colwyn bay is a different matter. I simply cannot fathom what is so much more appealing to them about staying so low down in the English system, when they could be competing for the title and playing in Europe regularly if they played 'in Wales' The main thing that anyone knows about Merthyr (if they know anything) is the games vs Atalanta in Europe. If they wre to play in the Welsh system there would be a very real possibilty of European ties again. Wouldn't that be more interesting for them? I think this especially know that Cardiff are EPL. Lots of blue/redbirds in Merthyr, so if their local team plyed in the Welsh system they'd have a more unique angle... Agree about the WPL needing to have a unique branding based on community. A move to the summer would really help this too.
