Taylor was trending on twitter - it was generally mocking of him as the worst player on the pitch despite liverpool having an average age of about 19. Harvey elliott gave him a tough time apparently. I think his confidence is shot and I would be concerned if we needed him to come in instead of davies at some point. Thanks for that. That is bad news indeed. Taylor was having a terrific season up until the October international break... and then just disappeared off the radar. I hope it is not any personal / family issues.
Only saw the last 10 minutes of the game. He was certainly getting the runaround by the Liverpool attacker in the first half. James Chester has certainly been missed I hope he makes the squad for the Euros.

James Chester is massive for the squad. He might not be a Giggs shoe-in first 11 but if we get injuries and suspensions the cupboard is a little bit bare at CB

Another start for Chester, away at Fulham in the cup will be a good test.

What does James Chester need to do to get back into contention ? Now fit but not really featuring for Villa, he would of been a cert had he'd not missed most of a year through injury. Would 10 games for Villa would do it ? Perhaps a loan to the championship and becoming a regular maybe. I still think a 100% Chester gets a place in the starting 11.

Given the length of his injury lay off I can't see himself being given the games to work back up to 100% in time for the Euros unfortunately. I don't think a loan would work either because I think his injury return will need to be managed very carefully, and it's probs best to do it at the club who are most aware of how to manage it. I think it's just going to be a timing issue in the end really, unfortunately for Chester. My guess would be that by next season we'll see him start to get involved with Cymru again, fingers crossed!

Reckon if he stays fit, he might get the spot available because of Mepham's injury.

Great move, really hope he gets a run of games. Will definitely be in with a good shout if he plays regularly until the end of the season.

James had a very decent half. Very confident on the ball and constantly involved in the play out from the back. Don't think he could have done much about the Charlton equalizer in extra time. If he can keep this up for another 45' - I would be very impressed. A (poor quality) feed here -

Great to see him back
Would Giggs play Chester and Williams together? Possibly with Rodon in a 3?
If Mepham is fit Giggs wi have a tough choice.
Mepham Rodon Williams Chester.
If all fit these would be the 4 I take.
Davies and Gunter providing extra cover

Chester possibly starts in a 3-5-2 but Rodon and Williams start for me if they are 4-4-2.

take 7 defenders for me, (gunter, davies and ampadu all covering CB) but if Chester carries on getting minutes till the end of the season Giggs will have some really tough decisions to make. i think giggs will go with: Rondon, Mepham, locktear/chester with gunter, roberts, davies and neco.

i'd take him 100% - just have this feeling giggs wont... especially if chester continues to get game time.

7 defenders + Ampadu will be enough
Rodon Williams Mepham Davies Roberts
Think the above 5 are certs
Gunter Neco Williams
Would be my choice as things stand
Leaving out
Chester Lockyer Taylor Fox Lawrence Matthews Richards Cabango
Could get an experienced back 4 out of those left behind.
My only worry is not having a specialist left back to cover Davies so Neco or Gunter could get swapped for a left back

Chester is considerably better than Lockyer and James Lawrence.
The tricky decision is Chester or Mepham, again Chester is better, but it would be harsh to leave Mepham out.
I'd like cover for Ben Davies at left back, that would be between Fox, Jazz and Matthews for me.
As it stands, the defence I'd take would be: Gunter, Roberts. Chester, Rodon, Ash. Davies, Fox.

I'd go three centre-backs, four full-backs, with both Ampadu and Ben Davies able to fill in at centre-back if needed.
I'd go with:
Ashley Williams Joe Rodon Chris Mepham
Ben Davies Connor Roberts Neco Williams Chris Gunter

If Chester gets a run of games Mepham could be the one to miss out. He's going to be injured until April and with Ake back playing will Mepham come in immediately after his injury? If Mepham struggles for minutes on his return and Chester plays from now until the end of the season I'd probably favour Chester.

I think both mepham and rodon will go and rightly so. They're both similar types of CBs so you'd want at least one of them playing. If rodon gets injured, I would be nervous with any combination of chester/Ash/Lockyer as part of a back four. Ideally we would take rodon, ash, meps and Chester with the former two as the first choice CB partnership and latter two as like for like back ups to rodon and ash respectively. It won't happen though, he'll go with rodon, mepham and Lockyer as the CBs + davies, Roberts, Williams and Gunter/Taylor as FBs, leaving Ash and Chester at home ☹️

james chester released by villa. he'll make a great free transfer for any mid table premier league club or championship club - the risk being how bad his injury is and how he needs to be managed going forward. rewatching the euro's and the campaign to get there... Chester was outstanding.

james chester released by villa. Great news, I suspect a good championship club will come in for him (or a prem team might even take the risk) and he'll have an opportunity to press his case in time for the euros. He seems to be doing quite well at stoke. I agree with cadno on this, a chester-rodon partnerhsip would make a lot of sense.

I've gained the impression that Sion Spence is quite a technical player, although I stand to be corrected on this. If so, it would be interesting to see if Swansea might be interested in him.

Chester being released is baffling. Tyrone Mings gets an easy ride for how much of a liability he is. Chester is the best natural defender Villa had. I think his stock is too low at the moment for a Premier League team though.

I think his stock is too low at the moment for a Premier League team though. I'd suspect he's on a decent wage. They probably don't want to risk keeping on expensive players who aren't in the starting XI in case they drop down a level.
