I don't mean to downplay Jonny's contribution referring to his lack of goals and assists. As I said above, I love the guy and I agree that his ability to keep possession is invaluable. But if he's being played as an attacking midfielder, that's one attacking position in the line-up being taken by a player who won't score or assist. Which is why I'd like to see him played deeper in the Allen/Britton role, and then the more attacking role can be taken by someone with more of a goal threat so we get the best of both worlds. This is a point I've made for a long time. His skillset is better suited to playing centrally. He's certainly got the work ethic and willingness to tackle and get stuck in. Whether or not he has the necessary discipline and reading of the game is another matter - but until he's given deployed in that role on a consistent basis we'll never know. His contribution against Azerbaijan in particular came from dropping deep to pick up the ball and driving at the opposition. His dribbling ability and short-pass distribution is top-notch - so we should look to make the best of it. Perhaps he would be best deployed in a three, either a 4-3-3 or a 5-3-2, where the defensive responsibilities aren't as great as in the pair in front of the back four in a 4-2-3-1. Agree with this. He came on as one of the two deeper midfielders against Azerbaijan and changed the game. I'd be happy to start him there against England to see how he gets on

I would be concerned with him having such important defensive responsibilities against better sides though! Having said that, as alarch says, until we test it we won't know for sure.

Seriously, how isn't the lad in the Premier League, never mind nailing down a starting spot in League One? I love him to bits!

It's always been his biggest weakness (apart from his injury-proneness). He'll be 27 next week and he's only scored 4 senior goals. And he doesn't really get that many assists either. I love the guy, but an attacking goal-scoring midfielder he is not. And I don't think that's likely to change now. He'd be best served being moulded into deeper lying, Joe Allen-esque player. Probably should have happened earlier in his career tbh. Think Lee Bowyer has found himself a number 9 ;-))

Really?! Malcolm Allen reminds us every bloody time on S4C! Not all of us can speak Welsh I didn't mean it in that sense, I'm surprised people don't know he's never scored, and it was a dig at Allen as it's been getting annoying hearing it every game.

Seriously, how isn't the lad in the Premier League, never mind nailing down a starting spot in League One? I love him to bits! There was talk of him going to Spain at one point which would have been ideal for him and his style of play. That could have moulded him into the great player we expected one day, when he was 16/17.

He was rated higher than Zaha when both were coming through the crystal palace academy together. It's a shame he hasn't been able to kick on as much as we'd hoped, but no matter where his career takes him from this point on, he's had a massive impact on Welsh football. I don't think we would have qualified from the last campaign without him coming on and turning that home game against Azerbaijan around

Buzzing today. We finished that game where Neco was the only player on the pitch with an international goal. We said someone was going to have to make a name for themselves & here comes Jonny!! Hope we play the 5 at the back against Ireland in the next one - I think that one will be a tougher game than Finland in all honesty

Having had some horrendous luck with injuries from the age of 22 onward, I think Bowyer deserves praise for the way he's nurtured Jonny from the treatment table to the pitch as he's built his fitness back up.
Clubs not wanting to take a risk with him has meant a drop down the leagues, but this lad is a standout gem. This past season and a half have been his most consistent fitness-wise. His injuries have been minor and recovery rate consistent with those an average player may face during a season.
Cross fingers for him that his body may have (finally) adjusted to the rigours of the game, and I hope going forward now he'll prove to teams/managers that he's becoming more reliable fitness-wise. That should see him rise through the leagues again.

Who else has watched that goal back like 20 times today?
The only shame was that it wasn't in front of a packed CCS!

I remember a cold night in Glasgow in 2012 - Bale has to go off with illness with Wales 0-1 down at HT.
On to replace him a certain "Joniesta" to make his debut - Scots ectastic with our talisman having to go off and surely now 3pts in the bag for the Tartan Army with there supporters shouting "Who the f***ing hell are you" as Jonny entered the field to replace Bale.
Within 30 mins they soon knew who he was LOL!!!
FT - Scotland 1-2 Wales
The deafness thereafter at a packed Hampden Park was a thing that will live long in the memory!!!
