I keep promising myself that I won’t look on this thread as it’s just the same thing being repeated over and over again in circles but I’ll make one last post. Of all the arguments against Ramsey, the ones saying that ‘other than these upcoming games, the Euros and the friendlies before the Euros, he hasn’t played for Wales in over a year’ is the most bizarre. Arguing that he hasn’t played for us apart from the times that he has played for us shows that we’ll never resolve this argument. As someone said above, it’s getting like Brexit where no one wants to budge from their position. Some seem to privately hope that Ramsey pulls out so they can be right. as opposed to him playing and, you know, us having a quality midfielder on the pitch. Well phrase it like this He's played 9 games for wales in the past 3 years 6 of those games were during a tournament and the tournament build up. It was me that said its like brexit - lets knock this on the head now but means no smug i told you so comments! We all want him to play!!

right we're done now - please delete this thread Haha yeah, would suit me. The fact that we are having the same arguments when he has turned up as when he pulls out shows that this thread has run it’s course.

I'll save you the time.. person writes totally one sided argument with no substance based on the fact everyone else is wrong to call out Ramsey for playing a total of 3 games since 2019 (apart from the euros) but played 69 games for Juventus since 2019 - 35, 30 & 4 this season. He's played 4 games for Juve this season and been benched for 2 games. The minutes played Wales v Juventus is a total misrepresentation but yes lets not get the facts get in the way of a blinkered argument. Our last double header Ramsey did pull out for a minor muscle injury and played either side. He has done this before. This bloody Ramsey thing is like Brexit - Im right, your'e wrong. I think supporters are quite right to question a player who has probably pulled out of more squads than any other player in our history. "Our last double header Ramsey did pull out for a minor muscle injury and played either side." Incorrect, he missed Juve's game before the last international break. I'm not going to get dragged into this debate, just correcting that

Back to Ramsey's effect on Wales.....
Unpopular opinion, but I struggle to see him making a big impact in the next two matches - depending on how much he plays, if at all. A lot of Ramsey's success has been achieved with Bale playing, and he's now lacking match fitness, sharpness, while also playing alongside players he's not that familiar with.
I know this sounds hypocritical from someone who's slated him for missing matches, and who's now available, but I don't think he's going to be the miracle worker a lot of people think. If Bale couldn't be the difference between us and a team like Estonia then how do we expect Ramsey to be?
(wonder how this will go down)

There have been other games where the opponents have been able to do a job on him and where he's been ineffective - that Ireland decider stands out. But generally, he's been a big game player throughout his career for club and country. You are right, however, that with him struggling with injuries and form for a while now, it is asking a lot for him to replicate some of those top performances in these two games.

If Bale couldn't be the difference between us and a team like Estonia then how do we expect Ramsey to be? (wonder how this will go down) I agree and have been of that opinion for some time. In many ways I’ve never been able to get over the game against RoI to get out of tje WC group. I wanted to see Wales in Russia at the WC2018 like no other tournament we’ve been eligible to qualify for, that was my Holy Grail of tournaments and Coleman (as confirmed by Osian) had purposefully played safe by taking draws instead of wins to leave us needing a mathematically possible, but practically impossible task of needing 4 wins from 4 games just to make the sodding play off. In the build up all anybody would talk about was “don’t worry about Bale being out lads, Ramsey will step up and destroy them because he’s a big game player” and on the day we couldn’t have possibly done any worse if Edwards or Woodburn had started instead of Ramsey. He was completely, utterly, totally shit against the most basic of opposition, 3/10 sort of stuff. It was significant that whilst ROI targeted Allen they were almost careful not to touch Ramsey in case they undid all his good work (for them) by injuring him by accident and we might be forced to bring a player on who actually had a clue. Ever since that night I’ve always found it hard to buy into the narrative that he is as good as everyone says he is, especially after seeing Eriksen then make easy work of ROI in a way that Ramsey couldn’t. Since then he has turned up for Wales and put a creditable shift in against Hungary (which looks better in hindsight given their Euro 2020 form) and against Turkey, but other than that unless I’ve missed something he really hasn’t hit the long ago heights of Euro 2016 in a Wales shirt imo. So I’ll be expecting him to have an anonymous game if he plays against the Czechs as much as I would be expecting a good one. I struggle to see him as a top level player these days because he very rarely stands out in a Wales shirt. He was largely anonymous in Euro 2020, although I’ll be the first to admit he most certainly wasn’t alone in that. Maybe that’s the price of having so many injuries? I dare say that has had a great deal to do with it. Having said that as much as I’d love to see others kick on where is the competition? I don’t have much faith in Ramsey but then if it’s a case of Wilson being the next taxi off the rank then I have to wheel back round to Ramsey and say without him in the team I don’t give us much chance at all against the Czechs. In general I feel like the squad has reached a transition point, where the last of the 2016 old guard shouldn’t really be guaranteed starting berths in the way that they are given they’ve all had a somewhat dramatic early decline (at least for Wales) despite ‘only’ being in their very early 30s and it’s a mark of how the players coming through haven’t kicked on that despite very indifferent form from Bale, Ramsey and Allen over the past year+ in a Wales shirt there is still hardly any competition for their places to the point where a guy who was playing non-league in January has got pulses racing because we’re desperate for a bit of fresh impetus rather than the same old, rather tired faces.

Fair point about the Belgium and Serbia games. Looking back the Serbia one is hard to take as iirc we had done enough to justify winning it until Serbia scored late and that late goal, plus arguably not showing enough ambition away to ROI was what directly lead to us being in the last chance saloon against ROI at home. I guess you could say the Georgia home game too but we were second best in that one for long periods so not as hard to have recriminations about that game. In fact iirc we were only ever behind in one game- the decider against ROI. Every time I’m reminded of that campaign I’m reminded what a shocking waste it was. Too much acceptance of draws by Coleman and inability to see games out which had previously been a strength. Grrrrr I’m angry all over again now! 😂

So much to disagree with in that post. Yes he had a shit game against Ireland. It happens in football. Sometimes things just don't go your way, sometimes the opponents do a job on you, or the tactical set up isn't right. There is no player on earth who's never had a stinker. Messi's had 3 or 4 of them since moving to PSG for Christ sake. I get you were really invested in that game, as were we all, but it's absurd to change your whole opinon of a player based on one game. You say Eriksen made easy work of them, but actually their very next game was in Copenhagen where they held Denmark to a 0-0 and completely nullified Eriksen. Despite being very limited in many ways, the one thing they and O'Neill were good at was nullifying the opposition's creativity through an incredibly conservative yet wel-drilled and disciplined approach. Yes, Denmark scored early in the next game and were then able to get a few more when Ireland were chasing, but that was very much the exception to the rule. Prior to that second Denmark game they had gone 10 games without conceding more than one goal in any game and only conceded 4 in total. You say he's only turned up for 2 big performances since then, but as we all know he's hardly played in big games since then. He did well against Ireland in the nations league, was superb against Hungary in his only start in the euro qualifiers, was superb against Turkey, and fairly quiet in the other euros games where the whole team struggled to get on the ball. Apart from that, there have been no other games apart from a nations league game or two. So he's had 3 top performances in his last few appearances.

Grrrrr I’m angry all over again now! 😂 I'm actually most annoyed with the Georgia home one, because we actually started on fire and scored after about ten mins. From that point, you could see the team, led by Bale, deciding to bring down the tempo. They thought the game was already won. I remember Bale playing the game at a walking pace and gesturing to his teammates to slow things down, thinking it was clever game management when in reality it was the exact opposite. We let them gain confidence and made them comfortable, they started to apply pressure and got the equalizer, and then we just panicked and went a little gung ho. Had we continued with the same tempo that we started with, I'm certain we would have won that game quite comfortably. I disagree with you and others on the draws. I think, going into the campaign with three tough/stubborn opponents (4 if you include Georgia), aiming to win the home games and getting draws in those away was not a bad idea - it would have got us the top spot. It's just that cock up against Georgia that derailed the whole thing. In hindsight, we should have gone for it more in Dublin as well because we had all of our key players fit and they showed no ambition all game, so we didn't need to play for a draw.

In hindsight, we should have gone for it more in Dublin as well because we had all of our key players fit and they showed no ambition all game, so we didn't need to play for a draw. That’s why I point to the ROI game because at least the Georgians had something about them. I bet O’Neill couldn’t believe his luck when we went there and upon seeing them playing for a draw from the off we responded in kind for the first half. I complained bitterly about it afterwards because believe me it wasn’t lost on me that having Allen Ramsey and Bale all fit for that game was a blessing we should have made more of and in hindsight I’m sure Coleman sees that now too considering how we ended up losing Bale for a good portion of the campaign. It’s like the thinking was by getting a point against a poor Ireland Bale and co would bail us out against better teams to come. I don’t understand why you wouldn’t see Ireland away as a more winnable game than Serbia away and act accordingly so we weren’t facing the prospect of needing to win over there to stay in the driver’s seat. The draw over there then meant we had that impossible run at the end of the campaign. It was the sort of strategy only a supreme optimist could think was viable given that all it took was one slip to be de-railed. Anyway bringing it back to Ramsey and to pick up on your other response, some fair points and I am in some ways holding him to a very high standard by being so disappointed by one performance- to be fair that’s probably less to do with the player himself and more by the way he had been built up as a big game player. I appreciate every player has off games but to have the reputation as a big game player you have to stand up in games like those and it wasn’t for him being marked out of the game either, he saw plenty of the ball, too much almost, but he was just extremely poor with it. Culminating in that desperate free kick towards the end where the ball is probably in orbit alongside Chris Waddle’s penalty from Italia 90. Overall his form for Wales over his whole international career has been patchy apart from Euro 2016. That’s what he could play like on his day, but you never really know when that day is going to be. If he starts against the Czechs it would be a brave man who puts money on Ramsey having a man of the match performance.

Hmm, not sure if I like this - poor decision from Page to be honest.
He will be under enough pressure as it is to deliver after being out for so long, without the burden of being captain as well.
Anyone else feel the same?

I know he has his critics, I've been incredibly frustrated with him at times, but I'm so glad it looks like he'll play tomorrow. It is just typical the one game he can make Bale can't.
*one game isn't the right wording, one round of fixtures.

Funny old world we live in isn't it. According to some on here never plays for us and avoids doing so, so that he can play for Juve
Yet here we have Juve fans claiming he does the opposite. As always, the truth clearly lies somewhere in between

I've made the point before, but Ramsey went on about how he was just as frustrated as everyone else with all the games he's missed. He's clearly aware of all the stick he gets. Interesting to hear Gabbidon say on EJFOF, as someone who knows him and has played with him, that Ramsey loves playing for Wales and it means just as much to him as it does for Bale

Always fit for Wales? I wish. He keeps getting muscle injuries at Juventus because of the failure of their medical staff and as a result he barely features for Wales.

It can't be if Juve's fans perception is that he always turns out for us not them I dont want to get involved in this again but its all based on this misleading stat: Over the past 7 months Ramsey - Wales 447 minutes Juventus 378 minutes Does not take into account we had a tournament and for around 4/5 of those 7 months there was no domestic football. Like saying Ramsey hasn't trained with Juventus for the passed 4 days but managed to train with wales - silly comparison. Ramsey has come out now and said he's not being managed by Juventus correctly in terms of recovery time during the week. Perhaps he's edging closer to a premiership return, good for Him and Wales. I think this Juventus spell has been disastrous for him in footballing terms

The reality is somewhere in between and he's probably just unlucky with injuries in reality That kind of ends the debate for me, there's no conspiracy. Just a man who has had bad luck I thought the Juve move would be great for him when he signed for Allegri. But since Allegri left Juve have gone downhill quickly. I'd rather see Rambo back in the Premier League now. Wages might be an issue but there will still be plenty of club who would want his quality. Maybe he can be the first signing under the Newcastle revolution hahah

Ramsey has come out now and said he's not being managed by Juventus correctly in terms of recovery time during the week. Perhaps he's edging closer to a premiership return, good for Him and Wales. I think this Juventus spell has been disastrous for him in footballing terms I seem to recall him slating the Juventus medical team pre Euros, or during the build up to the game v the Turks.

Funny old world we live in isn't it. According to some on here never plays for us and avoids doing so, so that he can play for Juve Yet here we have Juve fans claiming he does the opposite. As always, the truth clearly lies somewhere in between That doesn’t reflect on Wales fans on here at all. Even the most cursory glance at the appearance stats shows that that person is quite clearly talking bollocks. They’ve done no research at all when coming up with that “always fit for Wales” line.

Always fit for Wales? I wish. He keeps getting muscle injuries at Juventus because of the failure of their medical staff and as a result he barely features for Wales. That's the point though, it's not some conspiracy to avoid playing for us as many on here have suggested. It can't be if Juve's fans perception is that he always turns out for us not them Juve’s fans perception (generally) is that he is a drain on their wages and isn’t good enough for them. Injury criticisms stem from that first and foremost.
