Good move for everyone in my opinion. I don't think Swansea will miss him and he'll be playing in the champions league.

Is this definitely happening?
As long as he has been told he has a big part to play in the project at Arsenal, I agree that it is a great move all round.

A great move and opportunity for him, goes to show that you can work your way to the top. Hopefully he will start well and keep his place in the team Link? Still just rumours?

According to the gossip column on the BBC Napoli boss Rafa Benitez has taken a shine to Ashley Williams after impressing for the Swans in the Europa League recently.
Interesting!!

If there's any chance of him joining a top team in the champions league this summer, whether Napoli, Liverpool or someone else, he has to take it. I think he's 29 now, so its now or never. His status as a Swansea legend is already secure.

He inspired them to a win away to Saints today. He was excellent. MOTM for sure. He even made two goal line clearances to keep the three points.

He'd walk into England's team now, so happy with his commitment to us, and the way he's playing for Swansea is inspiring

good to see him getting the plaudits he deserves. Always turns up for us and I think after Bale and Ramsey he's the next name on the team sheet.

Why does his place of birth negate him being Welsh? Ive never understood that really. One of Beckhams kids was born in Spain, does that make him Spanish? Its about parental cultural heritage and the blood that flows in your veins. He has every right to call himself Welsh.
I find it a shame hes not more bullish about it - the apologetic nature of his claim makes him sound like he knows he doesnt really feel Welsh and is trying to make the most of how its panned out, like with the reference to "the country" rather than "my country".
Ah well, as long as he does the business on the pitch thats all that matters.

Do you know what, you could be born in Cardiff, with a mum from Swansea and a Dad from Bangor but that man is as Welsh as the rest of us. He embraces the country and culture and knows how important it is for us that he does his best. I think that is a Welsh attitude and trait. You dont need to win everything in sight like the English expect, but as long as you go out and give it your all and leave that pitch knowing youve done everything you can then great. Hes proud to be Welsh and im proud hes captain of my country.

Jesus was born in a stable, doesn't make him a donkey. By definition a 'nation' is a group of people united by a common identity, therefore nationality is all about what you define yourself as - it's completely distinct to citizenship which is far more black and white.

As a Swan & proud Welshman, I think that Ash is terrific on so many levels. I concur with the comments above.
A part of me - and I declare a personal interest - would have liked him to have been that bit more explicit about being Welsh but on the hand identity is a very personal thing. He said:
"I’m not stupid enough to go around saying I’m Welsh when I was born where I was born"
There is a danger that that above does concede some of what the interclub rivalry peeps were saying. I feel no less strong than I always have done that place of birth need not determine how we identify ourselves. I am every bit as proud of Ash, George, Joniesta and HRK as I am of our boys born in Wales.

I agree you don't have to have been born in Wales etc to be welsh, but I think what Ash is saying is that he was 'english' until the FAW came knocking. Now he is feeling the welsh vibe, but let's not kid ourselves that he was 'welsh' all along.

Yeh thats how i saw it, he wouldnt have thought about playing for Wales before he got the offer, but ever since Luxembourg he is one of the proudest players on the pitch to wear a wales jersey, and sings the anthem too which is great to see.

Now he is feeling the welsh vibe, but let's not kid ourselves that he was 'welsh' all along. That's a very important point Squatter. Its vital to remember that it takes time for the importance of such a commitment, a feeling of pride, of responsibility and one of belonging to be realised and to bed in. Over the years I hope many more of our non-Welsh born players have the same awakening as Williams and feel equally at home and attached to our nation. However at the moment I wouldn't be a bit surprised if a number of our youth products in the development squads still 'feel' mostly English at present. Its a process and a realisation that can take years to grow, we shouldn't be expecting our youth to display Ashley Williams levels of passion at 16-17 when they're still learning what it means to be Welsh and to play for and represent Wales. I do cringe at times when some fans send ridiculous negative tweets to players such as Isgrove for not mentioning Wales etc, which will only serve to antagonise and unsettle them in the long term. I hope that we as fans also realise the importance of our role in nurturing such feelings of pride in these players, especially with the immediate access to players that exists in today's world of social media.
