and can pass the ball too I think you'll find conventional wisdom says that he can't. It doesn't matter how much evidence you put forward Cymrupenybont said last may he'd love to be proved wrong if Ash could cut it in the Premer League. I trust he is now eating his hat?

Aye. He's been brilliant this season fair play, so has Neil Taylor - he didn't have his best game today though...

Both goals for Sunderland were wonder goals - no fault on Williams' part, nor Taylors'. Allen was sensational today - his pressing and distribution, long and short were top drawer. You will not get a greater travesty this season than today's result. Swansea totally dominated, and the Welsh players were to the fore as usual.

Yup,Swansea deserved a draw at least - second goal was a beauty! thought Neil Taylor made a few mistakes though, and yes Joe Allen was superb fair play.

Why, are FC Kluj preparing a bid? Oh yeah, sorry, I forgot. Ashley Williams is shit. He's slow and he can't pass. That better RD?

Hes just another player who has been overhyped by people with a vested interest. Show me people with no vested interest who are clamouring for their club to sign him and I may re-think. I doubt the likes of Man United or Spurs are queueing up for his signature. Just the other week against Arsenal he gave a goal away because he was hopelessly out of position. Thats not to say he won't ever play for a really big club, but I will put money on it not happening next season, or the season after for that matter. Basically, file alongside Wayne Hennessey- not as good as the people of Wales think they are.

I don't think he's over-rated at all. :L Wayne Rooney, or Shawcross are over-rated!:L he's always been a great defender, and fair play to him he's been superb this season, his performance against chelsea was clearly top top class. Solid at the back, amazing blocks, great tackles...he can pass the ball superbly! (long and short) He could fit in to any team in the premier league, ...Newcastle,Arsenal...Spurs? Maybe it would benefit Wales more if Ash Williams and Neil Taylor stay with Swansea for a few seasons more though. I'll bet with you that there'll be a number of bids for ashley williams come the summer transfer window...and i wouldn't be surprised if he leaves to a top 6 club! hope he doesn't though.

Who is better than ash at the moment? I mean who is playing better than ash not on reputation. eg Vidic is not as he is injured. Terry? Ferdinand R and A? Dawson? Cahill?
Against aresenal he was under instruction to make the extra man in midfield and so had to take a risk. Arse caught them twice but Caulker could have done better for the 1st goal. Name me a defender who does not make a mistake. Ledley v Man City? I think Ash is being judged because he does not wear a top 6 shirt. He is currently playing as well as anyone.

If Samba is being touted by some as being a £15m player then "our" Ash is worth that easily.

Speaking of hyped up Welsh players, whatever happened to Andy King? Wasnt he supposed to be playing champs league football by now too?

Williams has been outstading this season, him, vorm and allen the spine of the side.
watched them against spurs, the ball straight to williams from vorm everytime and a simple pass to taylor or allen. He wasnt afraid to ping it across field to dyer either. Really impressed.
Have to give credit to tosh though, that international experience has been great for him this season. Great attitdue too.

i don't know if he's overrated, over hyped or about to be whisked off to a top club.
all i know is that he is holding his own in the premier league and has been putting in consistent performances. That can only help Wales and thats good enough for me

Basically, file alongside Wayne Hennessey- not as good as the people of Wales think they are. You could put the whole England team in that file - not as good as the English make out they are. I think you'll find it is what generally happens with a "vested interest". When you consider how many caps Nyatanga and Morgan have, and the level they played at, and now to see Williams playing well in a decent premierleague team - isn't that an improvement? Shouldn't we be happy about it? You are defintely glass half empty.

Speaking of hyped up Welsh players, whatever happened to Andy King? Wasnt he supposed to be playing champs league football by now too? Good player - didn't start the season as first choice due to a number of big players brought in from premiership. Team failed, manager sacked, new manager, King in, King injured, out for season, not moving as a result.

Shouldn't we be happy about it? You are defintely glass half empty. Thats exactly why it bothers me, because we criticise the English for hyping their average players up beyond belief and it gets on my nerves- but its not any better on here tbh. We need no excuse to jump on bandwagons and reckon a player is champions league quality after half a season in the prem! Its King one week, Hennessey the week after, Allen the week after that and now its Williams. I agree with marsvolta, as long as they are doing the business at their clubs thats all that matters, I think the hyperbolic predictions about them playing champs league football in a matter of months are OTT and reminiscent of some of the English tabloids when talking about the likes of Theo Walcott.

I don't go overboard about Ashley Williams - not because I don't think he's good (he certainly is very good), but he is prone to an error or two. I've no doubt he can improve but we've seen the good and bad of Williams in a Wales shirt, and I don't think he will suddenly become a top 4 defender. The more he plays in the top flight though, the more experience he will get against the best clubs and best strikers and that can only be good. Be fair to the fans on here though. We get 10 games (ish) a year, plenty of quiet times inbetween, and a stat showing one of our defenders (a problem area for us for many years) is jumped on. Lets get carried away with positivity, especially as its been a difficult few months.

RD- when you talk about 'overhype' you're talking about few posters on here. there are just over 230 members of this board and only a small percantage contribute on a regular basis, so in effect there are probably only 20-30 people doing the hyping. And if us passionate fans can't talk our players up a bit then who will? because it certainly won't be the 'British' press, who are too busy hyping English footballers. And it won't be the 'Welsh' press who are too busy hyping egg chasers. I don't understand why people on here pointing out that Ashley Williams is having a fantastic season (which he undoubtedly is) bothers you so much?

The thing with Ashley Williams is that the hype is being justified by excellent performances against the best teams in the epl. That's a completely different thing to a young midfielder banging in goals in the english championship.
If he does move to an elite epl side, they'll need to judge whether he can step his game up a further level to Champions League standard. Whether he can or not, I don't know, but I hope if he does move, it's to a genuine elite team, rather than somewhere like Villa where his game won't improve and he'll have less chance of europe than if he stayed at Swansea.

Agreed! I believe he's better than the overhyped and overrated England defenders Lescott, Jagielka, Jones, Smalling and Cahill etc who journalists the last three to five years have gone on about how brilliant they are and they've turned out average! I'd like to believe myself that when he quits the Swans it'll be to a top four side where he can play Champions League.

Just thought I'd resurrect this thread in the light of the end-of-season stats in this table: www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thefootballtacticsblog/2012/05/you_will_probably_know_that.html#moreJust to spell it out: Williams tops the end-of-season list for all players in the English Premier League (aka "the best in the world") for passes completed, with Allen in 10th place. Shame I can't find that thread where it's claimed that Williams can't pass... Interesting that Williams also tops the stats on blocks. He's even better than we thought! Beatification can't be far away. For those Rangel knockers out there, please note that he's 5th for passes completed and 4th for interceptions. Most unexpected stat: David Vaughan in 5th place in Tackle Success table, with 85%. Perhaps he's more suited to a holding role than I'd previously thought.
