I would be astonished and really concerned if Swansea weren't going to sign a further centre back. Van der Hoorn struggled to get into the Ajax team - and is very much there as back up. Amat is promising but has only had bits and pieces, and so it's by no means guaranteed that he will adequately replace Williams. In any event, you need back-up for injuries and suspensions and having just three centre-backs, two of whom will be largely untested, is reckless. It would be great for Rodon potentially, but that's putting hell of a lot on a complete novice. I see an initial loan at a League One/Two club being the obvious path for him.

Didn't end up too bad for Ben Davies being a novice. I can't see signing a centre half taking place, things have been far too slow this window.

They need a relegation to reinvent themselves in the same way West Ham have. Massive public subsidies in the shape of the Olympic Stadium have helped That, being savvy in the transfer market, and having a manager with vision - Something Swans have lacked since Laudrup. Whether Ash leaves or not, James Chester should be signed by the club. Not just Swansea but any club in the bottom 10 could have done a lot worse than signing Chester, hugely surprised that he has had to drop down to the Championship. West Brom fans don't seem to be surprised.

What a role model this guy is. English born and bred but one million percent committed and humble. How lucky are we do have the likes of him and the other Welsh squad members that no matter how good they are nevertheless give an excellent level of commitment

Ashley Williams went off for Everton at half time... is he okay?
Edit - seems like he was poor in the first half going off the tweets.

He also thinks very highly of Chris Gunter. For me Rio was the best centre half the Premier League has ever had so for him to say that is something special.

Rio Ferdinand owns part of New Era Global Sports, the agency that represents both Ashley Williams and Chris Gunter. (As well as, Jazz, Tayls, Kingy and Jonny Williams.
He's been to a fair few of our games, and he even attended the London premiere of don't take me home as new era had a co production credit in the film.
Rio and ash are best mates. So although he speaks highly of him, he has a vested interest in him doing well.

"Man City 0-1 Everton Posted at 60 mins Double change for Everton.
Ashley Williams, holding his back, is being replaced by Davy Klaassen."
This off the BBC live text feed. Was he taken off injured? Fans on twitter seem to think it was tactical and are questioning Koeman's decision-no mention of an injury on there.

Klaassen made a vital interception at the end, only flicked it on with 20 mins left but hope it's tactical. Can't afford another injury!

Ash going off was definitely tactical. Klassen is a midfielder and Koeman tried boosting midfield in order for the team to give Man city more to think about defensively.

Looks to me that Ash is really not focused today. Partly to blame with both Chelsea first half goals

Couldn't find another thread for Ash.
In my opinion, he should retire now. He's really looking like his age is catching up with him now. He'll be 34 at the start of the Nations League and 35 at the end of European Qualifying.
Unfortunately I feel like he's lost a yard of pace very quickly and it's time to use these friendlies over the next year to find a replacement for him in defence and as a captain.

We have no replacements, if you want to make us defensively weak let him retire. Until we have adequate replacements id keep him in the side till he is 76!

Way too premature for a centre-back and certainly not one of Williams' stature. He was certainly slow against ROI - and age catching up may be a factor, but let's see how he fares when he hasn't had to play a short time previously in a far flung land.

And as mentioned, who is his replacement. We are defensively solid at the moment, this would change significantly with him gone, forget about Woodburn and co, we would be 1-0 down and out in games as we cant score that many.

He's become a complete liability though for Everton. I get where you've been coming from on the fatigue thing alarch because our away/home back to back records are poor. But I think Ash's slowness isn't a one off.
This is the best opportunity we're going to get to bring someone through who can replace him. We won't have the time to do it once the competitive fixtures start because it's pretty much straight through to Euro 2020 from then on. So unless you think Ash is going to be good enough at 36, surely he should move on now and let us get his replacement through.

To be honest 36 isnt ancient for a centre back, he is a good footballer so can get out of situation with good footwork. I agree with you that for Everton he has been terrible this season. But for Wales he is still solid, yes he has lost a yard and certainly not as dominant as he used to be, but still better than anythng else.

The Ash situation is similar to Coleman's...if he goes now, who replaces him? There has been talk of Ampadu becoming his successor but he's not even been capped yet so its far too early for that.
Williams should have another campaign left in him at his age and I hope he sticks about for it. We need as much continuity as we possible at the moment.

There's no way should he retire.
He has 75 caps for us, important experience.
Look at John O'shea, he's 36, he might not start every game but he's an important part of ROI's squad, and does a job when called upon.
Ash will continue to play an important role on and off the pitch.

I think a more apt question is should Ash continue to be our captain?
For me, he should.
If it's not Ash then I think it should be Ramsey, Allen or Gunter.
Also, he should move from Everton asap. Their fans are deluded and they're against him, it's a rubbish club to be at right now.
