The Bulgarian chick at work uses Turkish to fly home and she says they're excellent. Never had the pleasure yet. Airline or the chick? ;-) Both! I've never knowingly met a Georgian but most Eastern Europeans I know are bonkers. They've got really eccentric senses of humour and like a drink too. I'm doing both Serbia and Georgia but the latter is the one I'm really looking forwards to. Such a pretty city.

I'd say that KLM are marginally better value/times and convenience, if you are not going for the Luton to Kutaisi direct flight. WIZZ ALERT ;-)
The LUTON to KUTAISI route is on a 20% discount again this weekend through until midnight on Sunday.
There are only two more tickets at these reduced prices.
I can imagine that they will do a similar 20% discount across ALL FLIGHTS - but this weekends' discount is only for new routes.
Going out Thursday at 6.40pm is £80 (or £74 if member) Coming back Sunday at 4pm is £116 (or £109 if member)
I think the Sunday option is extremely attractive, as all other airlines dept Tbilisi at un-Godly times of night
MORE COMFORTABLE OUT JOURNEY
Sunday at 12 noon Dept MANCHESTER to BERLIN Schonfeld arrive 3pm Ryan Air £25 OR Sunday at 1pm Dept BRISTOL to BERLIN Schonfeld arrive 4.15pm on Easy Jet £26 Sunday at 7pm Dept Berlin arrive THESSALONIKI at 10.30PM on Ryan air £33 STAY THE MONDAY Dept Thessaloniki on TUESDAY at 8.20AM to KUTAISI arrive at 11.50AM on Wizz for ONLY £8 (or Dept LONDON STANSTED 4.40pm MONDAY and arrive Thessaloniki 10pm £40 on Ryan Air)
EVEN EASIER - £89 one way from CARDIFF Dept CF 10am Monday to Milan arrive 1pm on Flybe for £39 Dept Milan 6pm Monday arrive KUTAISI mid-night on Wizz for £50

If anyone is looking at using KLM/Ukarainian Airline with Kiev stop-over ... Remember that the local currency, the grivny (Gv) is only available inside Ukraine (closed currency) but exchange shops are available in the airport even late at night. Practically no difference at all to the down-town rate! Its spelt 'Hryvnia' - but there is no 'h' sound in Russian, hence: 'gospital' and 'gamburger' etc. If you are taking the airport bus/metro, just change £10 / €10 that will give you plenty of drinking/snack money and you can order a restaurant meal with a credit card. You might struggle to spend £20/€20 in a day, but there are duty free shops at the airport that will take local currency. Flying out of Kiev. I flew out twice, once around 1pm and once around 6pm and at both times security was a total breeze. From the entrance doors to the flight gate in around 15-20 minutes (with only hand luggage). Even for those of you looking at the 1am arrival and 8am or noon connections in Kiev, there is a great motel about 2 miles away from the Boryspil airport called KORONA HOTEL which only charges €7 bed and breakfast in a single room. Bellini pancakes and omelette for breakfast were amazing and their super cheap restaurant bar is open 24/7. A taxi there will charge you around 250 grivny (€8), although if you call/email the hotel they will send their driver out to collect you for only 90 grivny (€3) = any time of day/night! Book it through www.hotels.comIF ARRIVING TO KIEV INTL BORYSPIL DURING DAYTIMEThe Sky Bus 322 (the locals call it 'palet') will take you to the train station in 50 to 75 minutes, depending on traffic, for 60 Gv (€2). During rush-hour, you will do much better if you get off at "Kharkivska" metro station (€1 to here) after about 20 minutes and catch a METRO into town - its only 5 Gv (20c) anywhere! Dont expect to get a paper metro map leaflet ... but all metro stations are also numbered, so if you do your homework, it will be easy to count them... Its about 30 to 35 minutes into Independence Square. Although the train station is not very central, you can catch the bus back from there and its mostly down-hill from the centre of town to the station (about 30 mins walk). Note that the bus departs from the SOUTH entrance of the station - so walk through to the far side, and its slightly to your right.

Skybus was the one we took from station and had driver going onto pavements for a KM or two, chatting on phone with a coffee in hand and doing speeds that Sebastian Vettel would struggle to keep up with. Lad with me wondered had I been giving the driver lessons........ %^**&& !!!!!

Best to locate yourself in the area of Liberty Square or between there and Sioni Cathedral. Dont be too far away from the river, as the hills in Tbilisi can be very taxing ;-) Its a fantastic city, with wonderful food and the taxis are plentiful as is the local metro system

Never forget the Irish and Scottish bars. Absolutely brilliant. It was the Old part of the city where the embassies were. Which I'm assuming you knew anyway 😂

Very decent location. About a mile north of Liberty Sq and only 2 miles South of the stadium. Rustavali is the main shopping street as well as the main boulevard for opera government buildings etc. Still, the more beautiful / exotic part of Tbilisi is its Altstadt / old town - which is about half a mile WEST of Liberty Sq. Staying nearer to Liberty Sq gives you the freedom to explore both the old and the new as well as the nightlife. Don't stay in the old town itself, as you will hate the steep winding alley ways ...

Is it really a mile away from the main action? I had thought it was closer. I'm a lazy swine and prefer a five minute amble to the bars.

Surely you do not intend to be drinking the black poison at the enemy's bars?! Georgian wine is superb and their brandy / cognac is even better - please go local!

Just a heads up to anyone on WIZZ AIR in / out of KUTAISI
Wizz air have just amended most of their flights in and out of Kutaisi - you will probably only get an email notification in 5 or 6 weeks, though. None the less, you can see the amendment when you log in and check your bookings.
Just in case you have any second thoughts and want to CANCEL that flight, you are allowed to get a full refund or get 120% in CREDIT with them for future flights.
My flight from Kutaisi to Luton has only shifted by 5 minutes, but still qualifies for full refund.
That flight has been up to £190 or so, but is now down to £104 again - look out for their 20% OFF days and you might grab yourself a bargain...
If you fancy an OVERNIGHT IN MUNICH
Dept Kutaisi on Saturday 6.15pm to Memmingen (Munich-West) arrive there 8.20pm for £70 (or perhaps 20% another day?)
Stay the night in MUNICH and Dept MUNICH Int Airport at 5pm SUNDAY to either Manchester OR Bristol on Easy Jet (with change in Geneva) arrive around 10pm - FOR ONLY £50
IF YOU PREFER TO SAVE MONEY AND NOT OVERNIGHT IN GERMANY Wizz also do a SUNDAY early morning Kutaisi to DORTMUND Dept 6am arrive 8.30am for £53 (perhaps 20% if you wait). On Sunday there are at least six early/late afternoon flights from Dortmund/Dusseldorf/Cologne TO London/Birmingham/Liverpool/Manchester for around £50
KLM OPTION FROM CARDIFF WITH DIRECT AMS to TBS flight on Goergian Air
I noticed that lastminute.com now allows you to take the Georgian Air DIRECT return leg TBS to AMS on their KLM option back on Saturday morning for £238 return: Dept CARDIFF Thursday 5.15pm arrive KIEV midnight. Dept Kiev 12 noon arrive TBS Friday at 3.45pm ... cutting it a bit fine though ... The return Dept is Saturday 6.30AM but only 6 hours wait in AMS arriving CARDIFF back at 4.45pm
IF YOU CAN DEPT CARDIFF TUESDAY 10AM you get amazing connections with KLM on lastminute.com and they allow the Georgian Direct flight back on Saturday as well - RETURN FOR £242. Note midnight arrival into TBS. Dept Cardiff Monday at 6AM with the DIRECT Georgian both ways arriving TBS at 5.15pm for only £233

Like a good few on here, we are also going out on Tuesday 4th October from Gatwick to Tbilisi (11:50 flight via Istanbul) and returning on Saturday 7th on the 17:20 departure from Tbilisi again via Istanbul to Heathrow.
Leaving the car in Osterley so the outward journey will start with a tube trip from Osterley to London Bridge for the train journey to Gatwick (loads cheaper than the Gatwick Express from Victoria).
When we land back at Heathrow there is a very short tube journey to Osterley and within 15 minutes we'll be back on the M4 and homeward bound.
Looking forward to our September & October jaunts out east

Avoids central London. Thameslink is worst service for time. Also Southern Service to Gatwick from Victoria which is much cheaper than Gatwick Express. Either that or leave car at Reading and get train to Gatwick and then bus back to Reading.

The Gatwick Express from Victoria was something ridiculous like £20 last time I used it. The train stopped outside Victoria for ages and I missed the last tubes.

The only thing that I will keep my eye on is the industrial dispute on the southern rail network but hopefully it will be all sorted by the time we need to worry about it

Despite same Company running Southern and Thameslink only Southern is striking.

Turkish Airlines were top notch for the Serbia trip. The flights were on time and it was comfortable. Found BA shocking for Spain twice ditto Norwegian for Stockholm.

Thanks for the feedback. I was pleasantly surprised by the Dutch Transavia. Decent comfort and service, for a budget airline. Also used Wizz Air twice on this trip. Can't really complain. They twice departed about 40 minutes late, but made up the lost time and arrived on time. If anyone needs to use Sofia airport as a stop-over for Chisinau, and can happily report that it took me about 15 minutes to disembark, go through passport control, exit arrivals building and enter departures building 50m away, go through security and be at gate... I was supposed to have a tight 40 minutes change-over, but actually had time to order a great pizza (6 lev) and coffee (2 lev)

Just in case any one is booked on the Wizz Air flight Luton/Kutaisi.
A heads up, as they have once again changed the departure time (again by 5 minutes!).
Wait until a day when they offer 20% off their flights (about every 2 or 3 weeks!). The fare to Kutaisi seems to fluctuate a lot, so it is actually possible the current price will already be cheaper than yours (its only £53 at the moment!). Still, you are allowed to CANCEL your existing flight due to the time change and get 120% CREDIT REFUND. You will need to wait 2 or 3 hours until the credit registers on your account, then just buy the cheaper fare ticket! See if that together with the 20% discounted fare might save you some notes ;-)
Then... coffee is on you in Kutaisi ;-)

LEARN RUSSIANAfter the statement of intent in Belgrade, I am now more confident than ever that we will be be needing to speak Russian next Summer ;-) Notwithstanding that, you should find that most people over 30 years-old in Chisinau and Tbilisi will speak decent Russian. People over 50 are likely to be fluent in it. A great free tool to learning most languages is Duo Lingo. You set your standard and pace and it does the rest. A fantastic tool is their Tiny Cards - Flash Cards. A little repetitive, but a great visual way to study. www.duolingo.com/course/ru/en/Learn-Russian-Online
