Barnsley fan on Jones:
"Can tell he's a youngster. Very good for a couple then a bad one or two. Better at LB. Makings of a good player. I'd definitely have him at end of season."
Good experience for him getting first team football in the championship .

Decided not to bump the oldest threads on Gethin as I had a look at the threads and the discussion wasn't as good as this most recent one. Article below is very re-assuring regarding Gethin's alliegences. I believe Barnsley have the option to buy Gethin this summer. Not sure if the player has the option to consider other teams as his contract is up with Everton and his career there appears over it seems. ......................... AUSTRALIA NOT GIVING UP ON EVERTON YOUNG GUN JONES www.beinsports.com/au/football/news/australia-not-giving-up-on-everton-young-gun-/524448EXCLUSIVE: An international tug-of-war is brewing over the services of emerging Everton defender Gethin Jones - on loan at Barnsley - who is eligible to represent both Wales and Australia. Australia is keeping the door open to promising Everton defender Gethin Jones in a last-gasp bid to lure him away from Wales. The Perth-born 21 year-old, on loan at Championship club Barnsley, last month knocked back an invitation to join a junior Australia development squad camp in Spain led up by Olyroos coach Josep Gombau. Late last year Jones, who returned to the UK aged three and has been on Everton's books since the age of 12, said in an interview he felt "more Welsh than Australian", after confirming he'd been contacted over representing the country of his birth. Gombau isn't giving up hope that the Wales Under-21 captain may yet change his mind and swap the red for the green and gold before he is handed a senior cap. "We were been in contact with him over attending the camp but he told us, at this moment, he is with Wales and he does not want to change," said Gombau, who views the right-back as a future Socceroos prospect. "He is a very good player, and is playing in a position which we need to cover well. "If he were to change his mind he'd have a good chance of progressing. "Maybe one day he will become a Socceroo, but right now he's not thinking in this way. "He's the captain of the Wales under-21 team and is concentrating on his football in England." Gombau has also reached out to another on-loan Australian at Barnsley, left-back Callum Elder, with a view to assessing his potential. The 22 year-old - who is on the books of Leicester City - accepted an invitation for the March development squad camp but had to withdraw through injury. "Both players are playing at a good level. The Championship is a good League," Gombau said. Another Australian at Barnsley, attacker Ryan Williams, confirmed that Jones - who has captained Wales through the age groups from under-16 level - appears deeply committed to the land of his lineage. "He speaks fluent Welsh, and has Welsh number plates on his car," said Williams, who wants to play for Australia but could also represent Wales courtesy of a Welsh grandfather. "I think he feels a lot more affiliated with Wales than Australia. To him, it's his home. "He's a really good player. He likes to overlap, uses the ball well and is quick and strong. "If I think if he gets another loan next season he'll be happy with that and looks to have a really bright future." Asked if he thought Jones was Premier League-ready, Williams replied: "He might be good enough now but that's down to the Everton coaching staff. It's all about opinions."

Thanks for that, didn't realise he was fluent. Let's hope he gets a permanent contract at the hotbed of Welsh talent that is Barnsley FC and pushes on from here.

He's been interviewed by Radio Cymru several times, I'm not concerned at all about his commitment to us. Good to see him getting first team football, anyone know how well he's playing? Hopefully he can challenge Gunter and Richards soon.

Marley Watkins's stock is high and is a free agent in at the end of the season. Linked with moves away the past couple of weeks.

Been googling Gethin Jones every week for an injury update for ages as there was no info on the net. I now know more info than I'm comfortable with about strictly come dancing. Anyway, it seems his season long loan to Barnsley - www.bbc.com/sport/football/38670556 - has been cancelled as he played in an Everton DVP game a couple of days ago... www.dailypost.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/everton-fc-given-major-fitness-14023255Bit of a pitty the loan hasn't worked out as you'd think Barnsley might be a decent place for him to get games. Hopefully Everton still rate him as a prospect for them beyond next season. His contract is up in the summer I think...

I didn't understand your post for a second and then realised the BBC link I posted was from January. I could have sworn that Gethin went back on loan to Barnsley again this season, but it seems I'm wrong there and he stayed at Everton. Don't know why I thought that.

Before his loans he has been Everton's DVP captain for some time so I wouldn't write him off yet mate. They also triggered a one year extension in his contract in the summer so they either rate him as an Everton prospect or at least a sellable asset.

Thanks for the update. A little disappointing, as I was expecting greater things than mid-table league 1. Hopefully, that will come soon! All the best, Gethin

Thanks for the update. A little disappointing, as I was expecting greater things than mid-table league 1. Hopefully, that will come soon! All the best, Gethin I had the same thought initially, but then changed my view. Maybe it's a case that he backs himself and just needs to go to a level where he is sure to play games? Which is what he needs more than anything. He is 22 now and has less than 30 senior games on his CV. That's not good. I wouldn't be at all surprised if champ clubs went in for him, but with no guarantee of football. Think the move is right for him at this stage. (Not that I know anything about Fleetwood!)

Just watched the first half. It's the first time I've had a proper look at Gethin Jones and to me, he looks like a really solid, traditional full back. Defensively, he's been fantastic. He's up against one of the premier league's best dribblers in Demarai Gray and faced him one on one three or four times, coming out on top every time. He's also looked very good in the air, winning the header the two or three times he's gone up for it.
On the other side, he's looked to play it safe on the ball and hasn't offered much in an attacking sense. He's looked to get rid of the ball pretty quickly each time he's had it. That's the first impression anyway, but obviously might be wrong based on only 45 mins of watching him play.

He looked a better defender than Gunter - Gunter usually gets turned inside out by top class wingers. He was also more direct when he got the ball - he'd typically lob it down the line every time he got the ball as opposed to Gunter's go-to move of turning back and passing it sideways or backwards. He didn't offer Gunter's energy down this is just the impression I got from one game. Based on that, however, he looked like he has the potential to break into the senior squad and eventually challenge for Gunter's place.

He was OK but to say he kept Gray quiet all game is a stretch. Overall from this one game I would not be calling for him to start at RB anytime soon but he looks like he could easily hold his own in the second tier.

Didn't say that, Gray might have had some luck elsewhere but I can't remember a single occasion where Gray got the better of him in one v one situations, and I saw Jones coming out on top three or four times. Happy to be corrected if wrong.
