Yeah fair play to him, 28 now and time not on his side to get into the Welsh setup. Good opportunity to explore with Australia, I think he'd be a tidy player for them at international level, could go on to play at a World Cup too
If he does play for them at a World Cup he would join the club of "Welsh speaking players to have played at a World Cup" along with; Ramsey, Davies, Allen, Hennessey & Colwill - a pretty elite club that hopefully grows in future

He’s gone quiet on that since haha

I went through the squad on wikipedia yesterday and as far as I could tell the answer is no. Happy to be corrected but most of the players are from areas outside the heartlands, and couldn't find any evidence online to suggest they were in WM education. WM education was much less prevalent back then - for example one of the squad went to what is now Ysgol Gymraeg y Cwm in Swansea, however Wici Cymraeg notes that this wasn't Welsh medium back then. Just shows the importance of WM education

Gethin is 28 but we should consider that he might well be in the Championship next season with Bolton-most probably where Connor Roberts will be.Connor has digressed so much since World Cup Jones is unlucky to not have a sniff.

But I suppose he had to appeal to the SE of england listeners somehow.

Geth is a solid pro and a really likeable lad, and I'm pleased he's getting this opportunity. He would definitely have taken a call up to the full Welsh squad, and probably feels a bit let down having captained the side through all the junior age groups. He's been through a tough couple of years personally, if anyone chooses to Google it. He totally deserves this crack on the international stage at this point in his career.

Gethin should have been called up v Gibraltar.DaSilva getting no minutes for Coventry called up compared to Gethin regular Bolton top 3 L1.As said could well be in Championship next season.Page just seems too lazy to want to integrate new players into the squad. For the recent qualifiers most starting players had 40 odd caps-and Page talks new start ! Another of his failures.

With Huggins' seemingly season ending injury and Lockyer possibly not playing again shows the craziness of this situation. We only have Neco ( who plays LWB for us) the out of sorts Connor Roberts and Burns as RWB options now.

Yes, the misconception came from the fact they both come from Patagonia. However, Patagonia is a massive region within Argentina, and the towns with Welsh speakers in them are concentrated specifically within the Chubut province of Patagonia. There are estimated to be between 1500-5000 speakers across the towns of Gaiman, Trelew & Trevelin, which encompasses around 120,000 people. So even if we unearthed a player from one of these towns then the chances of them being a Welsh speaker is still quite low probably around 1-2%

A previous Welsh U21 captain, and fluent Welsh speaker, currently playing for Bolton Wanderers. May or may not have been good enough to make an impact for Wales, but I've just discovered he is now an Australia international! I wonder what happened here as he has stated in the past that he is "100% Welsh". Would have been one to have a look at in a friendly maybe? en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gethin_Jones_(footballer,_born_1995)

To be fair, we've been pretty well stocked for right backs over the past few years, to the extent we even play a right back at left back
If he were a left back I imagine he'd have been capped

I always thought, and have voiced this on this forum, that Gethin would be have been a good squad player for us, he can play competently anywhere across a back 4/5 and has played at a decent level all his career at various clubs. He's currently vice captain and highly regarded at BWFC. He's a very popular, influential and likeable lad. I understand his parents moved to Perth because of his father's work, and returned home shortly after he was born. This is all in the public domain so I'm not breaking any confidentiality here. He was obviously very close to his mum, who suffered from Motor Neurone Disease and passed away in 2022, which hit him hard. He took time away from football and considered retiring, but was talked out of it. Gethin captained his ancestral country through all the age groups, but although he was involved in training camps, never got a senior call-up. His mother once told him earnestly that he should consider playing for Australia, his birthplace. I guess after that it must have been a very emotional decision, but the chance to play international football in this year's Asian Cup, and maybe a WC appearance in the future, as a tribute to his mum, must have a big factor in his decision when a call-up with Wales was looking unlikely at 28. This is not somebody who jumped ships, but someone who waited, but ultimately felt his opportunities with Cymru had been exhausted and took the opportunity to make his mum proud.

There are some players who decide to represent another nation for good reasons and we should fully respect the decision, likewise there are some players who choose not to play international sport because they don't want to represent another nation and we again respect this.
Hopefully in time this will make a certain young Exeter based rugby player think again.

Hopefully in time this will make a certain young Exeter based rugby player think again. Presume that's Immanuel rather than Joe? Re Gethin. Delighted for him. Hope he plays at the WC with Aus. Just shows again the power of "Mam". Good luck to him.
