League 2, still young enough to climb the ladder Sometimes you've got to take a step backwards to move forwards. Not holding my breath though.

In fairness he just needs to get games, however needs this loan spell to work out or his slide downwards will continue.

League 2, still young enough to climb the ladder Ben Davies has been playing regular PL football from the age of 19. Gethin has missed his chance to reach the top at this point, and I doubt he'll be good enough to be Ben's backup.

Could be Welsh premier next or maybe Wrexham.
Been a quick slide down hopefully he can reverse this at some stage

Is there another thread on this guy?
Been starting regularly at RB for Bolton recently.
No idea how good he is, but is he worth a look at back up with Gunter getting older, and incase of injures (like now) to Roberts and Neco?

Also got forward to win the penalty for the first goal, playing on the right side of a back three, and vice-captain now. MJ had a very good game as well Matt Smith's career trajectory seems to have gone into decline though, was pretty anonymous, but at least he's getting regular game time now.

Wonder if Gethin Jones could be Gunter's heir as jack of all trades defender? It's probably between him and Regan Poole, unless a youngster comes up and usurps both of them. I feel MJ Williams definitely deserves a chance in the squad considering he's doing well playing at the same level as Morrell and Smith (and similar level to what Levitt's playing at too), and as an out and out defensive midfielder with a bit of height I think he could definitely offer something to the squad.

We now have a clutch of defensive midfielders playing at the same level, many of them in the same age bracket, but all below the required standard. We have Tom Lowery, Joe Morrell, and MJ Williams all in their mid-twenties and shown they are decent League 1 players. We then have Matt Smith and Dylan Levitt who are early 20s so potentially have a higher ceiling - particularly Levitt who is by far the most gifted, but blows hot and cold. Matt Smith is a bigger concern - he's younger, but not doing particularly well at League 1 so could drop further. Then we have a younger generation again in the likes of Savage, King, and James who are all in their teens, shown promising signs, and therefore have a much higher potential, but all unproven. That's 8 names, we just need 2 or 3 to kick on as decent championship players at least (hopefully at least one will become a decent prem player). Potentially a late bolter from one of the mid-twenties, and then one or two of the younger lot to fulfill their potential.

I'm sure others would favour a Giggs-type approach of spreading the net more widely and testing other options, which is fair enough. But as I've said before, I think we're in a different context now and that shouldn't be the priority. I think continuity is a better approach leading up to the WC. So sticking with settled squad members in Morrell, Smith and Levitt, unless other players are obviously much better. That isn't the case at the moment. After the WC, I'm not particularly fussed about whether we do test some of those other players, or put the onus on them to make the step up to the championship before they're given a shot.

Not sure why we would call up Gethin instead of Hoole, who plays in the same position, in the same league, doing well, and is 6 years younger. I would also select Denham ahead of him, like Page did for the Nations League

I dont understand the mentally of picking inexperienced, youth players over slightly older, but experienced players. Not every youngster is going to 'make it'.

I dont understand the mentally of picking inexperienced, youth players over slightly older, but experienced players. Not every youngster is going to 'make it'. Because Gethin Jones is unlikely to ever have a meaningful impact for Wales. If he were to be included over youngsters, he would still be behind Rodon, Davies, Ampadu, Mepham, Cabango, RND, Lockyer and Gunter too (although accept the latter isn't based on merit). So that's 8th in the pecking order for the three centre back positions, or if you're talking about RCB specifically, he's 4th or 5th in line for that role. But the point is, Hoole seems to be just as good, is much more likely to improve, and could therefore be an important player for us. Far better to bring someone like that in, than Jones purely because Jones has about 2 more seasons of senior football behind him (remember, he was stuck with Everton's u23s until he was about 23). If you're having a go at Page for something like that, it just shows that it's an impossible task for any manager to keep the fanbase happy.

I would also select Denham ahead of him, like Page did for the Nations League Forgot about Luca Hoole. He'd definitely fit the bill of versatile defender that could take Gunters role of covering CB, RB and RWB in the squad long term if he keeps performing at a decent level. Don't think Denham has ever played right back though, let alone alone RWB. I don't think we should just completely disregard slightly older players though. A 26 year old like Gethin Jones could easily give 6 years of service before he starts to decline, and 6 years is enough time for three qualifying campaigns. If he's playing well enough at a decent level he should be given a chance imo. But not until after the World Cup obviously.

But questioning the logic of selecting him ahead of someone who's as good, but 6 years younger and much more likely to go up a level or two. If it's experience we're after, it would make much more sense to bring Lockyer back in (thinking specifically about RCB here, Finn Stevens is the best bet at RB/RWB).

Not to say slightly older players shouldn't be ruled out but Right back is a position we're fairly well stacked in.
We've literally got Hoole, Fin Stevens, Mitchell Clark and Regan Poole all playing regularly, all younger and with a higher ceiling so I'd rather keep an eye on them.
Left back on the other hand we're absolutely crying out for. Niall Huggins is rated highly by Tony Mowbray, hopefully once he's back fit he can get game time.

I tend to agree with this argument up to a point. If we are talking about squad fillers and bench warmers/odd appearances to count down time/do a job, then I can fully understand Page's approach in bringing in youth and fully applaud seeing players like Luke Harris and Ruben Colwill in the squad by virtue of their potential. I just think it's a shame that in the modern footballing era that many players are not able to establish a consistent club career at a decent level until their mid-twenties, especially those like Gethin or MJ who've toiled in the reserves of top premier league clubs in futile hope of breaking through. Nathan Broadhead is another case in point, now 24, and still contracted to Everton. Many might have forgotten MJ Williams was once one of those Welsh Wonderkids and with the full squad at 19. I've banged on about MJ for ages, he gets occasional stick from the poorly enlightened at Bolton where he's the only holding DM, and the only one there to stop the opposition and initiate moves, but Evatt plays him every week because he knows he does the job of two. In a defensive midfield with either of the Joes I think he could really make an impact. I guess in the scheme of things players like MJ and Gethin, Broadhead or Mullin, will never displace the next maybe possibly big thing. I can understand the thinking there, but sometimes I wish we could just give these other guys a shot.

Gethin has played RCB now for the last couple of seasons, he's more of a potential Mepham cover, not an RB/RWB option. He's the now trendy overlapping CB and gels really well with the unfortunately NI international FB Connor Bradley.

I would also select Denham ahead of him, like Page did for the Nations League Hoole’s not doing well. Had a nightmare the other night (admittedly against the team top of the league) but he’s not been particularly great outside of that either. The vibe is that he’s not league one level yet and is having to play more than he should because of injury and because Barton made a mess of the transfer window.

I was just going off how much he's been playing and ratings on sites like whoscored, which obviously needs a bucket-load of salt. Even so, I don't think it's a position we're particularly struggling in, so I don't think Gethin Jones can feel hard done by. The onus is on him to make a name for himself and go up a level, until then we're obviously going to favour Ampadu, Rodon, Mepham, Lockyer, Cabango, and Gunter (for his experience) for that RCB spot where Jones is currently playing.

Was a well taken goal too, think he's the best option amongst Bolton's Welsh contingent for a wildcard call up. He is consistently, if unspectacularly, reliable. Pretty sure he's played all along the back four/five, left and right CB, FB and WB, and looked comfortable. Would be a real good squad filler just for that reason.
