Such a talent and the first taste of success in what promises to be a great career in the game. Nailed on starter next month.

EDIT Subbed to huge applause after 73'. They serenaded him with his great chant: Matthew Smith...

I'm a little biased, as I used to live in Belgium back in the naughties and back then Anderlecht were a massive club... Up until this current season they have never once failed to make it into European football, since the War... Nonetheless, I agree that they had a dire season this year ;-( Still, in terms of stature and prestige, there is no comparison between Twente and Anderlecht

That's true. But I'd argue the standard of opposition will generally be better if he stays at Twente.

Anderlecht played some God awful football this season. For me, its just that terrible Holland accent and the food and the beer and the waffles ;-))

Joined QPR on a season long loan. He should do just fine at that level, going to be another learning curve but looks like he has what it takes.

Apparently QPR already have a player called Matt Smith and he got transferred to Millwall today also. That has got to be the only time ever that two players with the same name got transferred in and out of the same club on the same day.

Very disappointed that Swansea didn't try and get him in - and it would have been a better fit than QPR. The silver lining is that it might give more room for the like of Jack Evans. Swansea lack a decent defensive mid to complement Matt Grimes (who may also leave) - so there could well be an opening there for another youngster.

Poor move in my opinion.
Puts to bed the arguement that he is as good as Ampadu.
Hope he has a great season and continues his development.

Why does it put to bed that argument?
Smith went out on loan last year and thrived, he's now stepping up to another level where he will hopefully start the majority of games and again hopefully thrive with the aim of maybe another loan at Premier league level a year later.
Ampadu is class no doubt about it, but if he keeps sitting in the reserves his progression and development is going to be hindered. Give me what Smith is doing over Ampadu every day of the week

Ampadu has played a total of 33 senior games (Exeter, Chelsea & Wales). Smith is a year older than Ampadu, so I'd say that so far in their careers they have roughly equivalent exposure at first team level, albeit Ampadu is mixing it at a higher level so far and will continue to improve. If Ampadu was still in Chelsea reserves at the age of 22 you'd have a point, but he's 18. If Lampard comes in next season I bet Ampadu will get plenty of games.

Matt Smith has played a lot more games at Senior level in the last 12 months, Ampadu has barely started a game, he may have played a part in 33 senior games but take out Exeter and games off the bench and he's hardly featured in the past 12 months at all.
I think Smith is coming along perfectly at the next step, if Lampard isn't going to be starting Ethan much next year he needs to get out and play regular football

I think your initial argument was that Smith is doing the right things and Ampadu isn't, which is where I disagree. I think they are both doing just fine, and Ampadu isn't "stalling" his career yet if he doesn't go out on loan this year. Conte seemed to want to play him, Sarri didn't but I think Lampard definitely will. So we'll see.

It's all about opinions, but I do feel Ampadu only play a literal hand full of senior games is going to stall his progression, I do hope you are right in regards to Lampard though, it would be a shame if he ignore the talented youth he has there

I'm not convinced Ampadu will play as they have a lot of midfielders in his position. I am hoping he goes out on loan to another premiership club to showcase his talents.

Or on loan to a side on par with Smith at QPR. That would be preferable to another season treading water.
Anyway sticking to topic, Smith just signed a new contract at Man City so they are clearly pleased with his progress so far. Bodes well for the season ahead.

Poor game and subbed after 51 minutes tonight.
Bad mistake leading to the goal.

Was ill for the first 2 matches. Since then played 55' twice (starting) but only 20' on Saturday (from the bench).
I missed his first half v Swansea - did anyone else see him in that one?

The pace of the Championship will be far higher than the pace of the Dutch Div. 2. I expect an adjustment phase for Smith, but I'm sure he'll improve as the season continues.

It must feel very strange for young Matt. The FC Twente coach claimed that Matt was the first player on his team-sheet, and other than the first 5-6 matches where he only played 80' or so, he played the full 90' game in and game out.
He did play the full 90' (+penalties) in the EFL Cup last round v Bristol City. Hopefully, he will get another 90' tonight v Portsmouth - and that might explain his 20' play-time on Saturday...

I saw him play - in theory - but I forgot he was playing, so can't say anything about his performance, other than he was hooked and was apparently at fault for Swansea's opener. Still, it's early days for him.
