Anyone have some info on this kid? Scoring goals for the youth team and appearing in articles. OR...is this Emyr all over again and therefore nothing to get too excited over. There is no route to the first team at this club so it doesn't matter how good he is, in a way.

There was an programme on BBC 5Live last night regarding the battle between Manchester's bid two clubs to sign up youngsters. This is a snippet regarding them trying to sign up kids as young as 3. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p04tt714I did not listen to all the programme but the one point of relevance is that more youngsters at United played for the first team. The full programme is here: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p04ttzm0

Which is saying something given he's in one of the most talented age groups I've seen for Wales. He's a very composed player, good awareness, who is always looking forward and playing with his head up. Seems to have an excellent football brain for his age. He's been given the captaincy a fair few times which must be a good sign. The comparison with Huws is actually a pretty fair one I would say. Smith is still at an age and stage in his development that leaves us only able to speculate on his potential. I do get a bit pessimistic when players are at the big academies these days, but hopefully he can capitalise on the Man City reputation and get a loan when he hits 19 or so.

Maybe a loan deal next season to a good championship club would be a good idea. Is he dual qualified?

Think he is too, going off stuff I've read online. Not sure he'll be ready for Championship footy next year? Though I haven't seen him play in the last half year or so. I'll have a look out for streams of Man City youth games. Hopefully he's broken into their DVP side and we can have a look at him.

Which actually brings to mind a (genuine) question: Prior to Woodburn, who was the last 'highly-rated' young player signed to a premiership club to break through and actually start making consistent appearances? To my mind we see more of Halley's Comet than we do of young Welsh lads actually successfully coming through the ranks of established Prem teams. You could argue Lawrence although he really didn't make many appearance at all before being flogged for a few quid.

I heard that some of the Utd coaches were not to happy about selling Lawrence, but Utd do have a buy-back option so you never know. Some info on Matthew Smith. www.mancity.com/news/academy/2016/09/01/all-about-matt-smith/1472639191668

Congratulations to Matt on the call up. Let's hope he gets some great experience with the first team and his raised profile earns him a good loan next year.

Can't see him getting capped yet but a great experience to go along with the first team.

Well done, Matt. If Matt is as talented as Huws, just without the injuries - I see a great future for him.

Isn't he the one who got Wilshere sent off in an u23 game earlier this season? If so, I like him already!

Matt Smith has gone on loan to FC Twente:
I'd like to see more of our youngsters make this sort of loan move, far better than U23 football.

Brilliant, they're a really good side too from what I understand They WERE quite decent (top 4 side) in last few years, but GOT RELEGATED this year ;-(
Still, Enschede is a lovely city, right on the German border.
The local dialect (Twents) is lovely - a combination of Flemish and German ;-)
Should get plenty of game time, from what the Dutch media are reporting

Despite playing in midfield, the boy can't help himself ... another goal in the first half (the equaliser, below). He does need to work on his goal celebrations, though ;-)

For your viewing pleasure. Started at 7pm. Its 2-1 and already an assist for our man ;-) A very noisy 30k seem to love him ...
EDIT That was certainly a game of two halves. In the first, Twente were allowed to play the ball in an expansive and flowing manner that suited Smith and he had a lot of the ball and made 2 or 3 great runs with it - almost creating another two goals. The second half was a tight and cagey affair. A lot of ball losses all around, and Matt seemed to be a little more nervous. Taking a little too long on the ball instead of simply passing it on. I don't want to sound too harsh on the lad, but he seems to occasionally over play.
Otherwise, we certainly seem to have another right sided right midfielder - so Rambo, beware ;~)

Matt had another 81 minutes tonight. Didn't watch it, as was in Newport, but had a quiet one by all accounts.
Saving himself for his super-sub role on Thursday ;-)

Matt had another decent game playing 81 minutes (again ... it must be in his contract). Had a decent shot on target as well as an "assist" for Dordrecht's OG.
Playing almost as a number 10, and often taking part in a very high press.

Only saw the second half of the match. Matt played 85 minutes today. Full of running, as a box to box number 10.
Very good late runs, and had three decent attempts on goal (in the 2nd half alone...)
