Read on net/forum that smith is out until the new year, no reason given fo his prolonged absence. It was reported he missed the last international fixture window with a tooth abcess, all a bit strange!

Smith not in the qpr squad tonight, that euros squad place might be slipping out of his reach... Hopefully his loan will be cancelled (why stay, it's not good for any of the parties) and Swansea can bring him in for the second part of the season. If he was to perform to the level he showed against Slovakia he'd be hell of an asset for Swansea, and he'd be in with a shout of making the Cymru squad.

Hopefully they terminate the loan and he goes back to Twente in January

Not long ago people wanted him ahead of Ampadu 🙈. He is now behind Morrell as well and his place in the 23 is very much in doubt.
Another that needs a good second half of the season and a return to Twente would be a good move.

He'll be competing with Ampadu though for that DM spot.

Maybe, contrary to accepted wisdom on here perceptions of performance in the Dutch second division aren't actually an effective way to gauge a player's readiness for senior competitive international football. Who'd have thought it?

Who'd have thought it? Cheap shot and quite simply bollocks, people were judging him on his performances in a Wales shirt!

There's plenty of hype on this thread from people getting overexcited over Smith looking moderately good in at a very low grade of football, probably from people who didn't actually see him play. It may have helped his game develop playing senior football for the first time but its no way to measure how far he is going to get in the game. Lower championship bench level is where he is and perhaps that is good enough for our international squad but its a lot less easy to imagine things and write narratives than when you are playing in the remote obscurity of what is basically the Dutch reserve league.

Can the next post on Matty Smith be about him being in top form and scoring a hattrick! Every time I click on this thread, I fear the worse ;-(
We really need him for the Euros!

Matthew finally off the bench (where he has been sat last five games) ... after 90' ...
He is wasted there.
Oh, the memories of those days at FC Twente ;-)

Came on for the last 25' v Gunter's Reading. He looked very good and brimming with confidence. Always making himself available and had plenty of the ball (22 touches!). I only saw those 25' of the game, but Gunts had two amazing interventions, to help his team win 1-0, in the dying stages.
WELCOME BACK ;-)

Would have been perfect for Swansea. Then again he didn't play for England U17s.

Would have been perfect for Swansea. Then again he didn't play for England U17s. Conor Gallagher's a level above Matt Smith. As much as it's good that the Swans have developed a lot of Welsh players in recent years, that isn't going to be clubs priority.

If Matt Smith goes back to Twente then makes it into the friendly squads then Cian Harries at Fortuna who are one place beneath them would deserve to be called up

Liam has been doing well at Fortuna and is still young. If we gave James Lawrence a chance Liam probably deserves it.... maybe not now but one day. Playing in a big league in Europe gaining some experience. He will earn his first cap for us by 26 at the latest.

If Matt Smith goes back to Twente then makes it into the friendly squads then Cian Harries at Fortuna who are one place beneath them would deserve to be called up I think the major difference between Matt Smith and Cian Harries is that, before being sent out on loan, one signed a new contract at Man City whilst the other is likely to be released by Swansea at the end of the season. Wouldn’t rule out Harries getting a new club and making the squad in the future though.

Wouldn’t rule out Harries getting a new club and making the squad in the future though. Realistically I can't see Smith breaking through to the Man City setup though. That's not a knock to him, it's just that no-one seems to make the cut no matter how talented. Foden is the only one you could say has broken through there, so it's likely that they re-signed Smith as they recognise they will get a fee for him eventually, probably after a few successful loans. It worked out at Twente but hasn't worked out at QPR, I always thought he'd have been better off playing in the Eredivisie first before playing in the Championship tbh, and it may be that he requires another couple of years to really hit his stride. Short term though as long as he is playing that's good for Cymru.

Would have been perfect for Swansea. Then again he didn't play for England U17s. Conor Gallagher's a level above Matt Smith. As much as it's good that the Swans have developed a lot of Welsh players in recent years, that isn't going to be clubs priority. You're comparing apples and oranges. Gallagher is a better player offensively, but is relatively weak when it comes to the defensive side of things (statistically weak on whoscored at both tackling and passing). His attributes and weaknesses were so evident in yesterday's opening goals. A poor attempt at closing down started off Wigan's move for the opening goal, and yet Gallagher's superb pass created the equaliser. Smith, who some seem to forget was every bit as good as Allen in the Slovakia home match, is a proper defensive mid, a ratter with a good range of passing. It wasn't even as if Swansea needed to choose between Gallagher and Smith. The real choice was between Guehi and Smith. Swansea have decent Welsh academy cover at centre-back, but have a glaring weakness (and still have) at the base of the midfield. Frustrating, as I'm confident that Smith will progress, given a proper appreciation of his talents. Whether or not Smith makes the grade at Man City is a moot point. But the fact that he has a contract with them for another 3 and a half seasons says a lot about the regard in which he's held, even if he ends up as just a tradeable commodity: www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/47713111
