It shows on the livescore app that he's in the starting lineup! They're not the most accurate for the starting 11. Any one know anything? The BBC report says Schalke may give a start to Wales defender Matondo. I'm note sure that clears anything up though. Talkshite commentator when announcing the teams: No place in the starting eleven for Liverpool born Rabbi Matondo. Really are a bunch of tw@ts.

According to an entry on the BBC Wales website, since Rabbi Matondo joined them there are daily tweets in Welsh or mentioning Wales on the Schalke 04 twitter account.

Matondo was on the bench against Man City and Mainz wasn't he? Hopefully not too long now before his starting debut!

PS - young Matthew is on next this Friday night at 7pm ...

Level is different gravy to where Smith is playing.
Its brilliant that they are integrating him this season and I expect him to be a regular next season.
Should be in our 23.

Let him settle in and become a starter for Schalke before we think about having him in the 23, it's paid off massively with Wilson.

Has to be with us. His pace alone is a weapon we could need off the bench

Has to be with us. His pace alone is a weapon we could need off the bench A guy that has played so few minutes in his career so far shouldn't be guaranteed a place in the 23. We've moved on from those dark days. However it is no surprise to me that you want him in the squad. You put a lot of emphasis on the club's that people for, even more so than the player and the attributes they offer us. I know let's replace Joe Allen with Matondo based purely on the fact that Schalke are better than Stoke 🙄

Not at all.
The fact that he is playing top flight football is a massive plus.
By no means a guarantee but would be in my 23.
Who would you have instead Marley Watkins, Gwion Edwards and Bradshaw

I disagree on Matondo. I've watched most of his appearances for Schalke where he's probably mustered around 3 touches collectively? He hasn't shown that he's ready for that level, the fact that he hasn't been able to get into games at all suggests the opposite. He's been quite timid, not looking to take any risks. That's all completely understandable for an 18 year old playing in a new country and a completely different lifestyle, but on the evidence of his first few appearances he's clearly not ready. Also, although Schalke paid 10m for him and he's had a fair bit of involvement thus far, that in no way means it's a gimmee that he'll follow a similar trend to Sancho. I think that's what most people are expecting, but he may simply be not be as good. Wait until he shows promise and puts in decent performances for Schalke (even if it's just one or two), and then we can start thinking about him being ready for a squad place.

I see your point but feel he will develop and could be a big player going forward. The alternatives may not.
Woodburn or Matondo would currently be a close call.

I can't see an argument for Woodburn over Matondo at the moment to be honest. Scored the goal against Austria, set up a goal vs Moldova. Not that I think he should get by on just that but I don’t think we should dismiss him until Matondo, Roberts and James make an impact at senior level.

With that being said I'd include all of them in the upcoming squad.

Yeah, no one'a talking about giving Matondo a starting place. But depending on our options going forward, and IF he shows promise, he should at the very least be given a runaround against Trinidad & Tobago. Depending on how that pans out, maybe give him a shot in the dying minutes of the Slovakia game. I am not saying Matondo will pull it out of the bag for us, but Woodburn certainly did when he bagged a goal at home against Austria. So did Ampadu at home against Ireland. There's no reason not to use him off the bench if the opportunity presents itself.

I'd play Matondo and James from the off against T & T - but then I think we should treat this as a B game, with the only big players playing from the off those that need game time, such as Ashley Williams and Gunter. As far as the Slovakia game is concerned - I'd have James as an impact player off the bench ahead of Matondo. He's developed a lot recently - and was the difference against Bolton, getting an assist, and was heavily involved for the first goal too. He almost scored a peach of an individual goal too. His headless chicken tendencies are diminishing with every passing game...

I’d probably say I’d pick Matondo over Woodburn but I do feel there could be an argument for Woodburn too. Take for example the fact he wasn’t playing senior football when he won us those games and isn’t now so nothings changed there. He was also a breath of fresh air taking players on, we tend to get players intimidated and prefer to pass back to the full back instead of running at players.

There wouldn’t be room in the 23 for all of them, but Giggs has been picking squads of 26/27/28 which I think is the correct approach for now. Get them all involved giving them a taste of the senior squad. Going back to when Woodburn came on the scene, you’re right he was a breath of fresh air. However, after watching the Albania game Matondo was the one taking people on, not Woodburn. Matondo looked more like the breath of fresh air you are talking about in that game to me. To be honest I’m just glad we have; Wilson, Brooks, James, Matondo, Woodburn, T. Roberts and Lawrence all coming through. They can’t all flop....surely?

No not at all, law of averages are one of them must make it. One abroad, one championship regular, one playing youth football for a huge club. Whichever’s the right path, if there is one, we should have at least one on it.

I don't think there's an argument over Matondo over Woodburn at the moment. One's been playing for a team in a top flight league, and the other has gone off the radar.
Woodburn has looked awful each time he played for us last year as well.

Let's not overstate Matondo's achievements to date - he's played a handful of minutes for the equivalent of an Everton. Promising, but nothing to get that excited about - yet.
Has anybody been following how Woodburn's been doing for Liverpool U23s?

Hopefully, he will feature in the derby tomorrow night at 7pm as well
