Interesting to read Abbandonato's comments in the Western Mail this morning, saying that Toshack has become immune, or apathetic, to players pulling out of Wales games. He even hinted that after 5 years in the job, Toshack may have created a comfort zone for himself.... Erm....most Welsh fans have been saying this for quite some time Abbandonato! He has been a staunch supporter of Toshack, backing him even though his awful man-management skills and dreary tactics have dumbfounded most fans for years! Sunday's friendly against Croatia was pointless in terms of preparing us for the September qualifier in Montenegro, and Abbandonato is at least right when he mentions that the Republic of Ireland had a near-full team out v Paraguay, Luka Modric turned up for Croatia, etc. With the greatest respect, we had a non-league player and a guy who's just been released by Walsall... Ok, so both of our goalies turned up, but we could have done with James Collins, Gareth Bale and Danny Gabbidon. Craig Morgan and Nyatanga might not be as good, but at least they show up for games! In midfield, some absentees were understandable (Ledley, Vaughan, Ramsey, Collison), but we could have done with Simon Davies, Andy King, Cotterill etc. The same goes for Bellamy and Ched up front! Wales have one friendly left, and a poor at that, as I don't see how playing Luxembourg will help us prepare for Montenegro, Bulgaria and Switzerland. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Toshack needs to go as all is not well in the Wales camp. Players are pulling out with considerable ease and don't seem to keen and eager to play for Toshack. We need a new leader, with new ideas, fresh energy and new impetus ahead of the next qualifiers. As it stands, and Abbandonato has slowly come to realise this, we're in for a new group but the same old Tosh...

The blokes had 5 years,We have gone so far backwards in that time that we are now struggling past the likes of luxembourg and san marino,If that isn't cause for him to go then i don't know what is,the players have spoken loud and clear,They don't want to play for wales with him as manager, the amount of retirements under his tenure speaks volumes as does the amount of withdrawls.
Players now know that we don't ourselves any chance of winning with this all out defence negative stone age tactics and anyone with half a brain can see that nothing has changed in his tactics for 5 years, everyone knows how we'll set ourselves out and how we're going to approach the game,So what is the point of keeping him on for another 5 years unless you are happy with the status quo,If you enjoy wales losing without a fight then toshack is your man,If you want the national side to give it a go and at least try and win then toshack has to go,Nothing will change with toshack in charge, the choice is simple.

Dear God, could it really be happening? Abbandonato finally taking a baby step outside his comfort zone of fence-sitting and lauding Toshack for building for the future? About time.
The result against Croatia was not exactly awful, but I do think there are a number of reasons to suspect that Toshack is not the right long-term option, particularly in terms of man-managing. A change for the Euro 2012 qualifiers is still possible - hopefully the FAW are not ruling it out.

Yes they could. The FAW just doesn't want to sack him. Tosh is on £250k p/a, with two years left of his contract. Paying it off fully would cost £500k. The FAW is reputed to have an income of approximately £2m p/a, and no corresponding expense that desperately has to be met.

My source would be some newspaper article. Pretty sure I've read that figure in the WM, although I admit that wouldn't be exactly an oracle of reliability. Hence why I added the qualifier 'reputed'. It seems, though, to me to be a reasonable estimation.

A quick scan of the Football Trust's 2008 accounts show that it made a £276k surplus, which took its net assets to £881k. Given that grants and sponsorship accounts for 56% of the Trust's income, a large proportion of which must come from the FAW, a £500k severance payment to Tosh would presumably have a huge impact on grassroots football in Wales as the Trust income would take a hit
Furthermore, the FAW's old Westgate Street offices are still empty. Now I don't know whether it owns them or not, but it is bound to be incurring increased overheads at Neptune Court; maybe it borrowed money to facilitate the move (although there was some UEFA money covering soem costs IIRC)?
Remember the FAW spending over £2m on stock market investments while giving only £100k to the Trust during Sparky's reign? What are those investments worth now?
All in all I'm not convinced that Tosh could be sacked without some major recalculation of budgets elsewhere

Why is Premiership centre-back Rob Edwards left out of the squas meaning that we are playing 3 championship centre-backs?
Has he done or said something to suggest that he would be bad for the team rather than an asset?

Just found this on the Wrexham forum,it reminds me of John Toshack's arrogant bullying tactics, Seeing as I've been mentioned on here (Ian Beddow, the interviewer, the fool!!) I thought I should respond. Let's get one thing straight, I'm not up Saunders' arse, never have been, never will be. But at the moment I'm not interested in controversy. To be honest I never have been. I always like to think I ask the questions any fan would want to hear an answer to. I don't seek trouble. But there are certain points I would like to put as to why I 'went easy' in the interview. After the H&Y defeat last year I interviewed Brian Carey. I asked if he'd spoken to Saunders as he was with the Wales squad. After my next commentary match (Altrincham at home in the FAT) Saunders chose the post match interview (on tape, and in front of fellow journalists) to say that he wasn't talking to me. I've been a broadcast journalist for 16 years, and this was the first time this had happened to me. It knocked my confidence for six. I had to cover the replay where again he wouldn't speak to me. Following that was the chunk of postponed fixtures over Christmas. I had a rotten time over that Christmas period. I suffered a stomach ulcer, brought on by anxiety/worry/stress. It was at its worst the day before a game, but lingered on as the team didn't play. For the first time in my career I actually cheered when I heard a game was called off. I think I drove to the Racecourse 4 times over that period only to drive home again, but I was happy (despite the fact it was another day, and another 3 hour round trip, without getting paid). It was such a relief to know I didn't have to face him again for a while. Yet the problem returned on the eve of the next game. Imagine how unsettling it can be. You start to question your own ability, you ask whether it's worth health problems and also you worry over your future employment. If he doesn't talk to me, maybe BBC Wales would not use me again, I have a wife, kids and mortgage. Is it worth the hassle?? BBC Wales were good to me, told me they were behind me, and I smoothed things over with officials at the club. However, it all started again when I questioned his tactics in an interview after the home game against Cambridge last season. I thought I was right to ask the question, he called it a 'clever dick question', again making me look stupid in front of fellow journalists and I honestly considered packing the commentating career in. I know I shouldn't let something like that bother me so much but it did. Last night (my first game of the season for BBC Wales) I was given a gentle warning that he wasn't happy with the interviewing again on Saturday. I was asked if I could be careful and I wasn't going to argue. My first question was simply: "What's your reaction". I let him speak, I added a few points myself, and at least I referred to the guys outside, I could have easily ignored it. I'm sorry if you don't agree but I can't let myself get into such a state again. If the club and the BBC are happy with me pointing a microphone at him and letting him speak then that's what I'll do. I don't have any hidden agenda, and certainly don't court controversy. I'm a Wrexham fan. Not by birth, not through choice either, but by the fact I've seen so much of the team over the past decade it's hard not to be. I have my personal opinions, but I'll keep them to myself. All I ever wanted to be was a football commentator. I'm not in the business of the scoop, or trying to catch a manager out when interviewing. There are a lot of journo's who've given us a reputation unfortunately. So there you go, it makes for an easier life for me, for him, for the guys at the club if I do just let him speak and go easy. If that makes me a fool, so be it. www.theargus.co.uk/sport/sportblogs/8348460.Puffing_Dragons_and_injured_bird/

Dean's old man was from Salford and was equally single minded and outspoken. Tosh and Dean's old man never saw eye to eye. Dean is single minded. He had two terrible injuries in his teens and worked very hard indeed to overcome them. He is in his first stint as manager and is finding that non league footballers just don't have the same ability as what he is used to. He is frustrated obviously. His grizzly demeanour is a sign that he is taking no prisoners in trying to turn wrexham around. Is he at the wrong club? Do wrexham lack ambition? The strange thing about football is that everyone is an expert. Imagine asking a lawyer of 20 years experience about his tactics in court. Hey chef do you think the broccolli should have been to the left of the grillet poulet and the sauce just a little less seasoned? The answer would be fuck off you little prick in most cases. Football managers have to put up with a lot of know all journalists. In my opinion i've only read one who seems to understand whats going on....J wilson. Saunders is wrong to let his frustration get the better of him but at least he's no savage.

I'm not a Wrexham fan but as it is Mrs Llannerch's hometown I spend a bit of time there and know a couple of genuine fans. I think Saunders came in and helped stop the rot at the club. His profile and playing record reinvigorated belief at the club and improved morale.
Having halted the decline, he hasn't, however, been able turn it fully around and has had a decent amount of time; he's been backed in the transfer market; and has been allowed to continue in his Wales role. On the latter point I think the club has indulged him, and if Beddow's account is to be belived the club doesn't appear to have told Saunders to buck up, man up and face the press...all of them, not just his chums. Another indulgence?

Iam suprised by Llannerch's comments about dean saunders boosting morale at the club. I'am a Wrexham fan and he is without doubt the worst and most disliked manager we have ever had. On tuesday a poll on who wanted him sacked was 99% in favour of him been sacked. He is single handedly destroying the morale of the club/town and fans with his arrogance and refusal to do the decent thing and resign as there is no way we can afford to sack him. He has now taken us to our lowest ever league position. The general feeling is the only reason he is staying is that he realises if he fails at wrexham, which he has, he will struggle to get a job in the future--- SAUNDERS OUT!! Keep up the good reporting Mr Beddow and get this joker out of our club, we all know his interviews and excuses are an ego booster for him.

I don't doubt for a second that morale among fans is low at the moment. My point is that when he first came in he improved morale. Confidence was soaring during that 8 or so game winning streak early in his reign. As I say, he stopped the rot...but he's not kicked on since
