30 league appearances this season vs 0 career league appearances. Tough call for Giggsy. Neco is in a squad behind the best right back in the world. If he was playing for Swansea, it would be nearer Neco 30 league appearances, Roberts 0. But he's not

I'd rather take someone with a bit less experience to a major tournament, there's some decent full backs playing under 16s out there!

Almost dropped a massive clanger That was 110% Gomez's fault. Gomez has had a shocking 5 minutes, massively at fault for the goal as well. "110% Gomez's fault" in the same way driving a car towards a cliff and jumping out before the edge makes the ensuing crash the car's fault. Neco dropped Gomez in it with a poor pass, immediately intercepted by Pedro and narrowly saved by Adrian. Hopefully he learns from it. We couldn't afford that if it was poorly placed pass to Ash, we'd be left for dead. Besides that one incident though, he didn't really put foot wrong.

Gomez should have held his position and waited for Neco to play a simple pass to him. Instead Gomez started inexplicably running towards him - any manager would be tearing his hair out seeing Gomez make that poor decision - 1) because it creates indecision in Neco's mind 2) it makes the pass so much more difficult as it forced Neco to play a gentle pass as Gomez rushed towards him, making the interception more likely. If Gomez hadn't strayed from his position Neco could have played an easy backpass and there would have been no trouble. Football is all cause and effect. But yes agree he had a good game overall.

The kid is class and will get game time in the league toward the end of the season no doubt. It will be daft not to take him to the Euros. Whats the alternative, Taylor?

If he was playing for Swansea, it would be nearer Neco 30 league appearances, Roberts 0. Agree with this. He is a better player than gunter and Roberts it's just a case of whether he is ready. If he plays then I might play Ash with Rodon at centre half If Roberts stays on the bench then he could miss out as Gunter can cover other positions

the friendlies in march will be the obvious barometer... but from the few games he has played he simply has to go to the euros. a country with our size of player pool can not afford to overlook someone with that amount of obvious talent. for me the full backs would be roberts, neco, and davies... and probably gunter.

As I commented on the Euro squad thread, he will be on that plane to Baku. Who get's sacrificed is another question, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was Gunter.

Gunter might make it because of his versatility across the back line.

Morgan Fox having a good season for Sheffield Wednesday, Gunter close to 100 caps and proven to be a good defender over the years, Adam Matthews playing well for Charlton, ok he's not 17 so nobody is going OTT but he's a good option, Jazz tidy player and playing more regularly now for Cardiff.

You are taking a risk if he's in the squad, it could be overwhelming for Neco this summer, Gunter has a CV full of top performances against some of the best countries in the world - people talk about Gunter as if it's a fluke that he's Wales' most capped player of all time.
We will score goals, it's our defending we need to worry about, people are seriously saying don't take Ash, Chester, Gunter, 3 experienced and top defenders, yes let's take as little experience as we can to face the best teams in Europe on the biggest stage!

I like Neco but he needs some positional discipline. Great enthusiasm, energy and a wonderful cross but its a bit like the watching the U10's when the kid that's picked to play full back really thinks he should be playing up front. Wing back in a 5 but I'd shitting myself with him in a back four. In the long run I see him following in Bale's footsteps and being moved forward.

i would not be surprised if Giggs doesn't take Ash, Chester or Gunter... he doesn't seem daunted by making unpopular decisions. I'm not saying its something i'd do by the way.

It's the "and top" part of this that most people are having trouble with. Everyone knows this tournament is just a warm up for the World Cup campaign, anyway. Every decision between youth and experience will be made with the next few years in mind.

He definitely was very far forward most of the game which left the defence exposed on several occasions. However, I'm not sure whether that's due to inexperience, exuberance and poor positional discipline, or by instruction. Judging by the way Liverpool play when TAA is in the side, I'd say it's the latter. So I'm not concerned by that at this point, but it will be interesting to see how he copes in a Welsh setup where there is more of an expectation for greater positional discipline.

That's the position he's being told to play for Liverpool, it's exactly where Alexander-Arnold and Robertson look to play. He does play very high up again for the U19's, but doesn't get challenged defensively at that level.

It's one thing having a long-term vision, but to prioritise future qualification campaigns over a tournament we've already qualified for would be moronic in the extreme for a country that has only qualified for two tournaments in our entire history! I don't think even Giggs and the FAW would be that stupid.

30 league appearances this season vs 0 career league appearances. Tough call for Giggsy. Take the one who can defend or attack, or the one who stops at the halfway line in loads of space, but turns around and passes back? Great servant, but we now have better.

This pretty much sums it up. Gunter had all those caps because there was very little competition for that right back spot. I agree he did not have many bad games but Neco is far, far better already.

Adam Matthews, Jazz Richards, Adam Henley, all probably better in the final third than Gunter, but you're doing Gunts a huge disservice here, he is a top class defender, professional, and team player, which is overlooked too often. Players like Gunter are vital for a team, Neco has potential, but he hasn't done anything compared to Gunter yet.

Football moves on I'm afraid, can we really call Chris Gunter a top class defender nowdays? I'm not sure. Is Bale still a top class forward? I'm not sure.
Yes there is an argument that he is good for squad morale, a players' player, popular, best friends with Ramsey etc. But Giggs has found a way to win and play well without all that camaraderie the Coleman squad had.
Roberts is still first choice RB for me, but if he gets injured, who replaces him? Is it really Gunter who's barely played any competitive football over the last 2 years, or is it the second best RB playing for the best club in the world?
You have to live in the now, not in the past.

We've beaten Hungary and Azerbaijan, and drew with Croatia... let's see how we do this summer, I would love to see Neco do a job like Jazz or Gunter have over the years against the likes of Bosnia, Belgium, Germany etc.
Has Neco played under pressure of the magnitude of a major tournament yet? No, how many first team appearances does he have? 5?
Starting him in the euros would be a huge risk, say what you like about Gunter, he's a good defender, and playing Full back for Wales in a major tournament, without any prior experience, would be a different task than playing a few cup games for a Liverpool side that has most of the possession.
I believe Neco has played against Arsenal, where they conceded 5 goals, Shrewsbury twice, A very weak Everton, and Chelsea, where they lost and conceded 2 goals.
And apparently that CV puts him in a better place than Chris Gunter to start in the Euros, he has a lot of potential, but come on!
I'd also argue that if Adam Matthews or Jazz started for Liverpool against Shrewsbury and a poor Everton, they would look impressive offensively, the fact is, we dont actually know how Neco will do in a different team, against the best international opposition. The friendlies will give us more of an idea though, I suppose.
