No chance the new stadium will be ready by June unfortunately. Unfortunately, unless you get into town early on Sunday, you wont even be able to have a closer look at it, as the Visitor's Centre is closed on Mondays...

Been there twice recently. Really nice city and found it very easy to get around on foot, but also there is a underground system, which was fairly simple to use. The city is split in half by the Danube, Buda being the older side with the Castle and palace, but most of the city is on the Eastern Pest side. You’ll be fine anywhere are around the city centre, but I found that most of the good bars, restaurants and clubs are in the Erzsebetvaros and Old Jewish quarter. If you are going out of the city a bit, just make sure its on a underground line. Hope that helps Recommended night life.. where to go... and where not to go (this is where I will end up ) Was out there about 3years ago and we stayed in an apartment in the Old Jewish quarter just behind the synagogue, I think it was called Dohanny. It was a very convenient location about, 10 mins walk from the big square at Deak Ferenc Ter, but it was convenient for buses and Trams. There were lots of bars and restaurants in the area, some were for locals and others were for back packers and tourists. You could also walk down to towards the river where there were lots of big hotels and boulevards. I went with the family so can’t offer a huge a,punt of information re nightlife and in places, but it was busy and looked like a good place for a bunch of youngsters to visit. They also have the big public baths/spas you may want to check out if you have the time. It’s a great place to visit and I would have no hesitation in going back. Do a night cruise on the river boat if you get a chance.

I see wonky sheep have gone with a £ 31 transfer price from Zagreb to Budapest. Don't seem that bad to me.

Leigh James running coaches from Zagreb for £29 per person.
I can also vouch for the Jewish quarter in Budapest. Central with great nightlife and food options. Can’t wait to go back!

I've stayed on both sides of the river and it's much more lively in Pest around Dohany Synagogue for bars, especially ruin bars. Great city and can't wait to get drinking palinka again after really enjoying raki in Albania

Any decent Jewish bakeries for the breakfast bagels? Too much burek is not good for the waistline ;-(

Any decent Jewish bakeries for the breakfast bagels? Too much burek is not good for the waistline ;-( Can’t remember about the bakeries, but plenty of good places and at tidy prices. Lots of kebab shops, but we have them a wide berth. There were a few hostels full of backpacker types places a couple of streets over, they looked tidy and staff were helpful. If I was 30 years younger I would have been in there!

Just clarifying this ;-)
Hungary will play their March fixture v Croatia in Budapest.
Looking at this ... Hungary have not played home fixtures away from Budapest for many years ...
... and finally, looking at Google "Ferencváros Stadion" is the same venue commonly known as "Groupama Arena"

Just to clarify why arena is not referrred to groupama in UEFA fixtures it is your not allowed to use a sponsored name unless there are already official UEFA sponsors so to stop any kind of guerrilla marketing So if Cardiff City Stadium ever had a sponsor in its title its would still be referenced to in UEFA fixtures as the Cardiff City Stadium

I posted a fair few travel options from Cardiff / Bristol to Zagreb on the Croatia thread. For those of you that can't make that match, but can join us in Budapest, there is an excellent Easy Jet option from BRISTOL to VIENNA on Monday for £67. Dept 2pm arrive Vienna 5.30pm. FlixBus, directly from Vienna Airport to Budapest for only €10 Dept 1815 and arrive Budapest at 9pm. Or direct train as well - Trains Dept from the Airport at 1803 and arrive to Budapest at 2119 for €29.
EUROWINGS has a direct flight on SUNDAY at 7pm from BIRMINGHAM to VIENNA arriving at 10.20pm for £62. They also have an earlier flight departing 0825 which arrives to Vienna at 11.40am for £86
If you dont mind a 2-hour connection in Barcelona - Vueling goes on Sunday at 1340 from BHX to BUDAPEST via Barcelona airport for £81. I had a bad experience with them cancelling my Barcelona to Belgrade flight in April (2 months ahead) but otherwise, a decent airline ...

Don't know why but I presumed the ground had a bigger capacity, 22k could be tight for tickets for those in the lower stages.

Nope. Its due to be completed late 2019, which probably means early 2020. Thanks for the reply. One of the guys in work and a bunch of his mates are going and have booked and paid for the trip. He doesn’t think they will have sufficient points to get tickets unless it’s in the new stadium which he believed would be each, so he may be in for a shock. Just wish I was able to go.

If the Welsh FA had gone to the Hungarians early and asked to reverse the fixtures then maybe by November it would have been open. That would have given us a Azerbaijan Hungary double away header. Doable but trickier for sure and cold. To be honest the Croatia / Hungary double header in June is the potentially best trip in years, its just a shame about the stadium in Budapest.

Bit worried about that ticket allocation, as I'm quite a way down the pecking order now.
We're cycling there! Well - from Vienna anyway. Along the Danube - 6 days cycling (will have to miss the Zagreb game) and a modest 50 km-ish a day. Then staying 3 days in Budapest. It's all fallen into place - just worried about getting a ticket now.

If you fail to get tickets in May, then send an email to the FAW explaining your trip - especially if it is charity/sports related.
If it isn't, then I will certainly look into raising money for grass roots / your local club etc.
Knowing the FAW, they might well give you 2 or 3 tickets from their own VIP allocation.

Thanks for the reply and suggestion Manulike. Actually, it's a fairly well-established tourist cycle route with good arrangements for transferring lugagge between destinations, etc. So just a holiday really and not something worthy of any special attention. I'll see what happens in May. Happy (ish) to watch the game in a bar if it comes to it.

Has there been any feedback on the interest levels for all of our away games this year. Its some weeks since the survey and people want to get on with booking. I suspect the numbers for Croatia and Hungary in particular could be very large.

I'm not encouraging the consumption of alcohol ... but there is a locally recommended Élesztő which has 25 Hungarian craft beers on tap! Claims to be the very first craft beer bar in Eastern Europe ...
Its on the same street as the Holocaust Memorial Center - which is said to be an extremely informative and moving experience.
Most beers cost between 350 fl. (small) to 750 fl. (large) - that's £1-£2 ... Its exactly half way between The Great Synagogue and the Stadium - 2km each way... Élesztő, Budapest, Tűzoltó u. 22, 1094 Hungary
OPEN FROM 3PM ONWARDS

With these 2 away games so close I wonder how much time the FAW will allow between Croatia applications and these applications , as Croatia will have to count as 1 qualifying match for Hungary .

I would imagine they will sell them on the same basis, both out of the current 12. To be honest it will make bugger all difference on your entitlement ton get a Hungary ticket. If you get one for Croatia then you'll be entitled to one for Hungary. I hope the WFA to be bullish with their ticket request. If you don't get you don't ask and they can only say no. Both these countries have developed reasonable overseas followings and both will have a number of expats in Britain. We'll give them 3000 if they give us 3000. Got to be worth a try.
