I’d be happy to stay in Istanbul for a night or two before moving on to a match elsewhere. Turkey away not too desirable. I have just booked myself Heathrow to Istanbul for £120 return with BA and then in a couple of weeks Buta Airways will have Istanbul to Baku for aroun £80 all being well! I am staying in Istanbul for 2 nights to have a nosey and just make sure of no problems with connections. Hotels are about £25-£30 a night in both cities so peanuts! Looking forward to Baku!

What's Baku like then? Can any seasoned travellers provide some pearls of wisdom? I'd like to do at least one away next year. Favourite is Croatia, but dependent on ticket allocation.

Wizzair fly Budapest to Baku and also Gatwick to Budapest.
Flights timings are not workable but airline would change so get between flights if they knew they would sell the seats. Tickets will not be on sale for months as that is Winter schedule
Have emailed Wizzair asking would they do a Bristol - Baku flight for this as they fly from both places but just nowhere connecting. Lose nothing by asking and if they got 4-5 full flights at a fixed price think they would be happy. Lose nothing by asking them.

Flying via Kiev with UIA can be done for just under £200 if you book the individual flights separately, though a long layover and some antisocial take off times.
Flying via Milan with combination of Alitalia and Azerbaijan airlines likely to be an option around the £250 mark, but their flights for next November aren't on sale yet.

That’s the return price from Istanbul. I’m actually flying from Noth Cyprus for that trip. Hop skip and a jump to Istanbul from the North.

Ryanair fly from Stansted and Manchester to Kyiv.
Stansted schedule is not yet available for November but based on existing schedule there is a Friday flight that gets in 2 hrs before UIA to Baku at 9pm. Ryanair might tweak to get people extra hour to transfer in transit if they are aware of it.
Manchester schedule gets you in at midday and have 9 hrs to kill before flight, just enough time to get to Maidan Square and get mugged by 2 Pandas ( - got photo but cost me €20).
Gatwick to Budapest and to Baku via Wizzair, again schedule not out until March and have asked Wizzair will they do a Bristol to Baku on a fans special, they just might if they know they could fill a couple of planes as a set fare. Guys if they do then I expect Ireland flag to be in pride of place in Baku .

If you see the Panda's, kick em in the nuts............ bit like the John West Salmon advert with the bear
Kiev is a nice city to walk around, however given there is a Presidential election in March, a military and police infested with neo Nazi's and protests at different times.
It is a place I would definitely be wary of and find out what is happening as I am travelling.
OTOH hand a nice shopping trip to Paris just before Christmas sounds so great and what could go wrong !!!
Based on some of the stuff I read, the population is officially dropping by 1/2 Million a year. But there are between 1-2 million Ukrainians who have moved to Poland, based on Polish work permits issued and thousands elsewhere. Many openly stating they have no desire to return.

I know a lad and his dad who were attacked in Kiev a few years ago by “ultras” whilst watching Wales play. One of my relatives was out there the same time, he had a good time but said you had to be careful. With elections and the on going issues with their neighbours it’s a place where you need to be careful

I was there for 4 days for the match and even went back two weeks later for another 4 days. Only met wonderfully friendly people. Since then, I have been back twice. Both times nothing but wonderful memories. I do speak a little Russian and indeed they often warn about other "hooligans" - but nothing that I have ever witnessed.

Yes, it was the game in 2016. Maybe they were unlucky, but they were singled out and attacked. Sadly there are nasty people everywhere.

Manulike. You seem to have your fingers on the pulse with travel particularly Wizz air. Do you know what date they provide their schedule for flights into November. Thanks

For those of you that haven't been to Tbilisi (and for those that have and enjoyed it) - I would certainly recommend Getting a DIRT CHEAP ticket to KUTAISI (on Wizz or RA) and then the train to Baku. The train NEVER sells out, as they simply add another wagon to it... An over-night sleeper departs Tbilisi around 8.30pm and arrives into Baku at 9am. A luxurious 2-person cabin is only £25 pp and if you want to rough it in a 4-person cabin, thats about £13 ;-) www.seat61.com/Caucasus.htm#Tbilisi_to_Baku PS - If you have a few days to spare in Georgia, a flight from Kutaisi to MESTIA is a MUST ;-)

we are looking at Heathrow to Baku via Istanbul getting back early on the tuesday to get to Cardiff for the Hungary game. Not booked anything yet as there are so many options. Could anyone who has been to Baku before please let us know what the situation is re visas. I've looked here www.visaforazerbaijan.org.uk/instruction.php where it seems they cost £78!!! not sure I'm looking in the right place though, never had to get a visa before :-)

If anyone is using KIEV as a stop-over, then note there is a brand new "Express Rail" linking Boryspil Int Airport with the main railway station in 40 minutes. The train stops also at Darnytsia (Red Metro line), mid-way - for really swift access to the Metro system. Its 71gv (£2), just to Darnytsia...
Metro trips in Kiev cost only 5 grivni ;-)
An advantage over the slightly dearer bus service is that you can buy the ticket using a credit card. The Skybus is cash only (100gv) and can take from 60 to 90 minutes depending on traffic.
See here - ukraine-kiev-tour.com/2018/kyiv-boryspil-express-train-schedule.html
