That was a bit of a wet fart of a game! Obviously it could have been a lot worse in terms of the result, but that wasn’t nearly as good as you lot can play. I think you’re missing Brooks just like we are atm, imho he’s easily top 3 players you have alongside Bale and Ramsey, who is also missing. There isn’t enough creativity in the centre of the pitch; I think a recently rejuvenated Williams would have been good to start with. Plus you’re clearly desperate for a decent, out and out striker. Anyone coming through the ranks for this atm? Roberts maybe? Have to say from a neutral perspective I think the standard of football has dropped since Giggs took charge. I can’t really see what his plan is in games, or what type of football he’s going for? His team talk before matches must be 'go out there and have a bloody good run around boys'. Absolute joke yet again

Giggs. Just fuck off back to manchester. You are out if your depth and taking us back to the Goulden days. I think he needs to go right now mate

No leaders at the back. We miss peak Ashley Williams massively. No threat in centre midfield with Ramsey missing! We will be a different team with him back. No striker. Those are not giggs' fault. But the lack of teamwork and the reliance on hoping for individual moments is. We are in a good position but morale from the fans is really low, tells you everything I lost count how many times I saw Roberts or Wilson etc give the ball to James, and he was basically left to his own devices on the wing. 'There you go, do something with it'. Where was the overlap from Roberts or the support from the other 3 attackers? It was such schoolboy stuff it was unbelievable. We're turning into the anti-football. Also the fact we played with 4 out and out attacking midfielders/forwards was evidently limiting us throughout the match. On numerous occasions, ampadu and allen were lying deep in midfield, and the top 4 were like 40-50 yards away! Absolutely atrocious. Only when Williams came on, filling that no10 void, we had a proper link between defence and the forwards.

I was impressed with rodon for the most part, but he showed a lot of naivety in the goal we conceded. Sure, Taylor and Hennessey were far more at fault, but he made a bad decision when he shot up at the guy who made the through ball, leaving the scorer (who was ahead of and quicker than taylor) to run in behind him. A more astute defender would have left the guy with the ball and backtracked to ensure he covered the runnners going in behind until he received support. Otherwise though, he was very good on the ball, made a couple of very good interceptions, and mostly good in the air (even if the direction of headed clearances could have been better at times). Good points, but we see things differently for the Azeri goal. I thought Mepham was more to blame - as he should have moved up to play the Azeri forward offside - or at least made sure that he was in a position to get back to get a challenge in. As it was he was in no man's land. You have to give credit to the Azeri midfielder who played a delicious outside of the boot through ball to create the goal. Before Jonny Williams came on Rodon was just about the only source of forward impetus with his dribbles into opposition territory. It gave the team a lift and led to a period of pressure. This is something he's shown for Swansea, and as with the Swans he's careful not to let the blood get to his head and makes sure that he finds a team mate once he's got forward, aware that a misplaced pass could lead to a dangerous counter. Old head on young shoulders.

Look last night was clearky dreadful but lets stop blaming everything on Giggs. I think the team is a bit unbalanced and he has been favouring youth a bit too much but it is clear that there is massive negative bias against Giggs. Toshack was given a free ride for developing youngsters and Coleman had a dreadul start, is clearly not a good manager - look at his record at club level - he had the benefits of Bale and Ramsey at their peak and his defensiveness arguably cost us a shot at getting to the world cup/ Certain players were absolutely dreadful with amateurish mistakes last night. Taylor's two mistake were inexcusable (second being how he stopped running after the first shot!) and I could have done as well as Hennesey! I have no idea how they can make such simple mistakes. Allen was mediocre by all accounts. These are very experienced players! How is that Gigg's fault? How is Bale coming is for criticism? Previously he was a freak of nature - incredibly and uniquely explosive. He is 30 now! What do you expect? He is however more of a team player now and he came up with key moments yesterday yet again! As mentioned the centre back partnership looks very promising Tall, strong and reasonably quick1 In terms of balance Lawrence and/or Wilson need to be on the bench. Lawrence is so frutrating. He is probably as talented as most but is so inconsistent - that is the reason he is not playing in the premier league. Wilson needs to learn to be more consistently involved and influential in a game. On Tailor - obviously Giggs must have indicated to Dummett he prefered Tailor as well as Ben Davies over Dummett - I would have favoured Dummet over Tailor - he seems far more reliable. Hopefully we get Ramsey and Brooks back for Slovakia as we need them! A pleasing aspect was the influence of Johnny Williams. I had completely written him off given his chronic injury problems. I hope he stays injury free as he deserves a career giving his unquestionable commitment. In summary last night was dire - but at least we found a way, albeit with a large slice of fortune! Imagine if Bale had buried that easy chance verus Hungary - things would have looked extremely promising. Slovakia getting hammered last night was presumably a good result for us too! You've clearly seen something in Giggs and the young uns. Your hope and faith reminds me of myself 6/7 years+ ago, I hope you're proven right. At least under Cookie, after Serbia 6-1, we looked like we had a bit of structure about us. Giggs was a risky appointment, and it hasn't been good so far. He was a very lucky man last night, and should take most of the blame for that dire performance. I see very little in Giggs but I agree with that post because it does have the smell, to a certain extent of people wanting to be proved right on the rampant animosity towards Giggs getting the job. For the most part, they are and he hasn’t done a great job, but putting last night in isolation the blame on Giggs has to be mitigated by the fact that our players were mostly well below the skill levels of the level they play their football at. The players should not be coddled just because Giggs is making a horlicks of the campaign as a whole. I don’t think it was a wise move but, purely based on last night, I don’t blame Giggs for bringing up the player’s application in the after match interview. Considering what he achieved in the game he must despair at seeing players like Allen unable to make a simple pass without ballsing it up and thus losing momentum. The late goal not only got Giggs out of jail, it got the players out of it too. Very few come out of it with any credit at all.

You can have the tactical acumen of 1980’s Italy but if you can’t string a pass together you’re going to look like shit from the off. The basics weren’t there, we should actually be really bloody pleased we got a win at all really imo.

Reminded me of my amateur days playing for the stiffs when we were short on players and rallied a few of the pub darts team and the 'two left footers' just to get a team out. The manager used to pull on his boots aswell even though he was 50 odd so we then had no-one on the line.....very similar to last night.
As a collective, we were absolutely dire, all were to blame however, ultimately though, the shoulder of blame must lay squarely on the manager. He doesn't have pub darts players to choose from, he has good quality pros in almost all positions who, from minute 1 to 90, played like a pub team. Their stiffs at that....!
I am always happy to give people the benefit of the doubt and I was happy to support Giggs from the outset and it all looked extremely positive after the Ireland game but my patience has now worn very thin with him.
The only positives were the 3 points and a handful of half-decent individual performances. Other than that, too many negatives to list. A shocking night.

The problem is the apparent lack of tactical knowledge from not only Giggs, but anyone on the coaching staff. We played with the "tactics" of a child playing on Fifa: "just throw as many forward on as possible and the goals will come"
There was nobody linking the midfield to the attack, just 4 wingers playing across a flat front 4. Lawrence clearly isn't a striker, so why did he put him there? When Allen or Ampadu collected the ball from the defence, there was nobody showing for the ball, meaning the ball went back to the full backs, then the centre backs, back to Allen and so on. You can point to the absence of Ramsey, but that isn't an excuse for me, its quite literally Giggs' job to figure out how to play without him, its hardly as if its the first time we've been without Ramsey for a qualifier. Wilson, Bale, James and Lawrence are all direct players, none of them play in the manner of Ramsey, or even Williams (who almost undid all his good work last night with a stupid turn near our own penalty area). Its piss poor.
Wales' showing actually made Cardiff City look like a good team

I don’t watch him play week in week out admittedly but all his positive qualities seem suited to a central role. He looks nothing like a winger, hardly burns defenders for pace before whipping a cross in, plus his shooting is wasted in a wide position. Should be playing at 10 for me and that, imo, was how Giggs lost the plot having Wilson wide with Lawrence up front and Bale in what should be the number 10 role. No idea what to make of the thinking behind that. Possibly due to a lack of centre forward options in which case you need to put Bale up front. He’s not the same player he was so it’s not like playing him up front is the massive loss out wide that it used to be. For me, the Slovakia line up was far more “how it should be” to suit the players available. It was all square pegs in round holes last night.

Clearly we haven't got an out and out centre forward (apart from Vokes) but Bale is / was one of the best footballers in the World. Surely he is clever enough / unskillful enough to make a decent striker. We lack something when Ramsey isn't in the team. Wilson is the nearest like for like player or at least someone who can adapt or the system can be slightly adapted to suit him. Another slight change on the system is potentially Ampudu in front of Allen and working as a 'half Ramsey' so at least having some link up between midfield and the forwards. C'mon Giggs it ain't hard to work these things out.

The way I see it, centre forward/striker is the least important position in a team, so it doesn’t make much sense to put the best player there. Yes, Bale is probably the best forward we have, but he’s still better used elsewhere.
The problem for me last night was four very attacking players, and then two gifted players sitting deep miles behind them with no link. That has to be Giggs’ fault. Either give Allen and Ampadu more freedom, or play a 4-3-3 with someone like Jonny instead of Lawrence/Wilson. It really does look like Giggs is mindlessly throwing young attackers on the field hoping for goals while totally disgregardig the importance of the midfield for cohesion.
Also, attempting the same corner time and time again? Giggs also has to take the blame for that, not Wilson nor Williams (who also tries the same thing)

I agree we missed an on form Aaron Ramsey badly last night, but there have been games since Euro 2016 that he's gone missing himself on the pitch in a Welsh shirt.
Also Giggs would have to utilise him properly and not play him too deep as we've seen recently.

Hennesey 3 Soft goal. Should have gathered the shot that was straight at him. What was he thinking with that pass in the end? Ward needs his chance now. But Ward also needs to show ambition and get a move for a regular game. Roberts 6 Tried and worked hard. No more you say Taylor 4 Couldn't get forward and massive error for goal. Rodon 6 Showed a bit of passion, made some nice forward runs and should have had a shot after one run to the edge of the box. Mepham 6 Another youngster finding his feet but like Rodon was let down by much more experienced players around him Ampadu 7 Already head and shoulders above all his team mates. Tackled everything and was only one you come out with any credit(JW aside) Allen 4 Showed why he plays for Stoke. On this showing alone, he is on the slide. My Euro 16 rose tinted glasses well and truly off Lawrence 4 Not good enough. Full stop. Wilson 3 U tube footballer. 3 corners in a row low to nobody at near post. Produced nothing. Never rated him. This is why James 5 Tried but gave the ball away every time he had it. Another youngster learning his trade but needs to bring his club game to the international stage. Bale 5 Would it be too much to ask him to beat a man like he used to? Face saving goal but that's 3 awful games in a row. Subs Williams 7 I think he is overated on this forum but by fuck, didn't he provide a spark when he came in. Everything Bale should have done. Direct running with pace and trickery. Can he stay fit and forfil his potential? Let's hope so. Vokes 6 When your not creating then the only option from the bench. Davies 5 As bad as Taylor was, a strange sub from Giggs. No time to settle and was okkff the pace Giggs 3 Couldn't argue with his starting line up but we look like a Sunday league team that the manager has just picked his best 11 players and said get out there and win. What were the tactics? Slow build up play, square passing around the back for the sake of it. I know he can't control the awful passing of the players tonight but my fear that he is out of his depth just gets stronger with every game. When you need a bizarre own goal and a late scramble to beat that lot them you know your in the shit. The FAW should at the very least be asking for a press explain. PR mans and wet dream gone wrong. What other nation employs managers with no experience what so ever? This will end in tears. Guaranteed Stopped reading at "U tube footballer"

Hennessy 1 - probably one of the easiest games he’ll ever play and nearly cost us... twice Roberts 6 - steady performance, doesn’t do anything wrong, doesn’t do anything incredible. Decent positioning for the shot late on that went wide. Taylor 3 - glad to see him go off as he is a liability at times. Awful pass for the goal. 5 yard passes are all well and good but eventually you need something more about you playing as a fullback. Mepham and Rodon 6 - did their jobs against a poor team with one striker. Can’t really give anymore than that. Ampadu 6 - gets a rush of blood to the head every now and again but gets the job done. Allen 5 - feel sorry for him. He’s a key player so has to perform but if the people in front of you can’t pass to each other you eventually have to try yourself. Wilson 4 - between running the ball out of play, hitting the first man on every corner I’m really not impressed. Stamping on a player could have ruined our campaign quicker than Giggs can. James 8 - clearly our go to guy at the minute. Sometimes it doesn’t work out but draws fouls, wins free kicks, creates space. Bale 9 - should be a 10 for that goal alone. Not on the same wavelength as the team because he’s far better than the majority of them. Can drift in and out of the game but it proved last night we’re lucky to have him and I was one of his biggest critics lately. Lawrence 4 - holds it up sometimes and that’s about it. Doesn’t impact the game much. I’ve wanted Lawrence as striker and shows you should be careful what you wish for.
Joniesta 8 - changed the game, gave us a bite. Put a stop to the passes side to side and got us turning towards their goal. Vokes 5 - no real time to do much. Davies 4 - saved us from Taylor. Looked shaky at times but hard to get thrown into the thick of things as a defender.
Giggs 1 - chasing the game and quite often there’s no one in the box. Just want to play this tikataka on the edge of the box with no cutting edge. Struggling to get us clicking as units in the squad. Another awful Wales performance against a footballing lower card.

There's a couple of points I agree with here but the first couple of sentences are absolute nonsense. Comparing what giggs has done, with the rebuilding that toshack had to do and the circumstances coleman had to deal with is an absolute nonsense. Giggs has the 2016 generation of bale/ramsey/allen who, although some of them are slightly past their best, they're still some of the best players we've ever had. Complementing that, we have a new generation of talent in brooks/ampadu/james etc. who are all, despite not having reached their peak, very good players. Collectively that makes it one of the best squads we've ever had. I hate it when people say things like this campaign is perhaps one too soon or giggs should have the same few years to rebuild that toshack/coleman got - absolute nonsense! Are people forgetting that if you wait till our current young crop reaxch their prime and give giggs a pass until then, by that point one of our best ever generations of players - notably bale/ramsey/allen, will all be past it? Giggs is wasting our best ever generation and that's what I'm really angry about.

Upon reflection and having looked at re-plays (cannot watch it again in its entirety - too traumatic), my main observation is that I feel there was no link-up between defence, midfield and attack. I felt the ball was being "lumped" to Bale and James at times.
The conceding of possession in dangerous areas was absolutely criminal and could have cost us the game. Imagine what the likes of Germany would do in those circumstances.
The pace was also way-off.
One of the worse home games I have seen in a long time but fortune was on our side.
We really need to get our act together!

Starting Ampadu over Jonny was a bonkers move! Almost everyone on here had Allen/Ampadu in there team line-up for a game at home to Azerbaijan???
You have Allen who is basically a holding midfielder (didn't need two!!!) Jonny Williams on form and a threat around the penalty spot should have started this game with his clever passes into our forward line!

I am always happy to give people the benefit of the doubt and I was happy to support Giggs from the outset and it all looked extremely positive after the Ireland game but my patience has now worn very thin with him. I saw that game as a reaction to us winning in the WC qualifier plus having a management team who had lost it and were clueless in tactics.
Too many Wales fans believed they were world beaters against an inept setup team where management already on the way out the door and players not sure what was managements plan. In truth Ireland couldn't have played worse, even against Denmark at the Aviva we were better despite the 1-5 result.

What other nation employs managers with no experience what so ever? This will end in tears. Guaranteed You gave Bale a 5??

We're crying out for HRK, his movement and chasing down. And, players like Churchy were a huge part in us qualifying last time. Sure we look good on paper with some of our young individuals, but a good team sheet doesn't make a great team. Hal quit Wales to play with his bitcoins. Let it go. that doesn't change the fact that we could do with him

Terrible game. I thought Allen and Rodon were good, Bale looks to be getting some sparkle back too. Goalkeeping is a big worry though.
Still, it's ours to lose at this point. We are only 3 points off the top of the group and we've got the top two sides to come at home. Every team will drop points before this is over so we must capitalise.
It is hard to see us getting over the line with Giggs in charge though.

Perhaps there was a "revenge" factor motivating them (there probably was for us fans 😁). Joking aside, the difference with that performance and more recent displays was the sense of cohesion in the team between the defence, midfield and attack, the fluidity and pace. Even if we had not yielded the same results against other opposition had we deployed the same tactics, the difference between that strategy and recent games is like night and day.
