I'm potentially biased, but I thought Colwill was Cardiff's best player tonight in a game they deserved something from. His workrate was fantastic, and he showed his usual quality on the ball and some strong runs. Hardly put a foot wrong - all was missing was a moment of magic, which we know he is capable of. I think he will have gone up in Bulut's estimation after that - it was notable that he made five changes with Etete, Meite, and Grant all coming off, but Colwill stayed on for the 90 and was their main threat to the end. I thought he was quiet from an attacking perspective first half, but he's been asked to improve defensively and he definitely did that. Second half I thought he showed a lot more on the ball, was one of the few players really moving around and getting on the ball to try make something happen. Also some of his better attacking moments came from him closing down and taking the ball. After that performance he surely has to be pushing to start more regularly, especially as Robinson hasn't looked so sharp in quite a few games this year (although still feel he's a very good player).

Improving all the time. Encouraging to see his younger brother Joel on the bench alongside Kieron Evans and keeper Matt Turner

Just feel like he needs a couple of goals/assists and then I can see him picking up a lot of confidence and the sky will be the limit.

He should be in the senior squad imo

He's putting in some decent performances, and getting a little more consistent, although he still needs to work out a way to have a greater influence on games and contribute more goals, assists, and general creativity. There are promising signs - much better defensive work, understanding of his role, and glimpses of real quality (turns, touches, passes), but he's capable of creating more opportunities / scoring more goals. That's the missing piece in his recent performances. If it clicks, he could take his game to a whole new level.
I'd like to see him stick with the u21s for the next camp at least. I think he needs to chip in with more goals / assists before he's reintegrated into the senior squad. It's too much of a risk to use him in the playoffs and there are better options currently, so better to allow him continue having that leadership role with the u21s.

At the centre of everything good for Cardiff - again
Set up the opener, if only he wasn't surrounded by clowns

Watched the game tonight. Colwill was the best player on the pitch for the first hour before getting completely knackered. Some sublime touches, runs, and created one of the best chances of the game. Put in a big shift as well. He's no longer a liability out of possession which is an important step in his development, although it does take a bit out of his attacking game because he does so much tracking back. He's still just missing those decisive moments in the league this season. If he can combine that with his now good all-round game, he's going to be a really good player.

Another start today for Rubin v Andy King. ... I got a little excited when my phone app said JOEL Colwill starting, but a quick look online showed that its RC.

Easily Cardiff's best player.

I said it before the game against Poland. Colwill should have been on the bench. Not saying it would have changed the result but would have offered something a bit different to what we had.

Reports and highlights suggest he was more productive and demanding last night, in an attacking sense at least.
We all know the skill is there but we need to see him making real contributions both in attacking and defensive sense. Hopefully that jumps up another level now.

As much as this season has been a positive step forward, I still hoped that he would have progressed more by now. On the plus side, he seems to have finally overcome those growth pains and has therefore been fit for all but a few weeks of the season. He impressed in Cardiff's second string during the early cup appearances and has had 30+ league appearances including 12 starts. His defensive understanding and workrate has really come on and he can now be trusted much more.
The main negative for me has been his attacking output. His assist last night was only his second direct goal involvement in the league all season. Obviously it's always a mistake to pay too much attention to those headline stats, and from the games I've seen his approach play has often been very good, but playing in his position he needs to be far more productive. I always felt that once he got a run of games, he would really go up a level and start producing the goods, but for whatever reason it didn't quite happen. He'll be 22 in a couple of weeks so no longer what you'd describe as a youth prospect.
Hopefully this season has been more about getting his career back on track and sorting some of the fundamentals that were lacking in his game (particularly on the defensive side), and then next season he can kick on in an attacking sense. Only then do I think he could be a real difference-maker for the national side.

I can understand your concerns and his stats are a bit underwhelming in isolation, but the way Cardiff play and the players he is surrounded by really limit his output. If he played in a more adventurous team I'm sure his numbers would skyrocket. I really hope Bulut doesn't get a new contract and we hire a more attacking manager instead (though I'm not particularly optimistic of it happening). If we do roll with Bulut or another dinosaur next season it would really be best for Colwill's career to move on and find a club that appreciates his skillset and understands how to get the best out of him.

Not convinced that replacing Bulut would be good for Colwill or Wales. Colwill could do with some stability having been managed by 5 different people in his first three seasons as a senior football. Moreover, Bulut has finally started to trust him and as long as he does well, Colwill could be first choice in the 10 position under Bulut going into next season. And as much as Bulut is a pragmatic / conservative type of manager, many would argue that Page is in the same mould so it might be beneficial for us that Colwill has like-minded managers at club and international level. On the broader point, while I do think there is some merit in it, you have players like Ng that have a scored a few more than him, while Grant and Bowler have been more productive too, so he should be doing better. If he were to go to a more adventurous Championship side he may not get the same opportunity to be the creative focal point for them, and would probably need to drop down a level to be first choice.

Taken from the BBC Football website
"Aaron Ramsey, who was back in the starting line-up for Cardiff, was replaced by Colwill who was at the centre of everything positive for the Bluebirds in the second half.
It was Birmingham who looked the most likely to break the deadlock after the break, despite never really testing Horvath.
And they were made to pay for the lack of clinical edge shown in the final third, when Bowler and Colwill exchanged a one-two which put the ball on a plate for the Nottingham Forest loanee to score first time into the bottom corner."
Very good to hear.

Very good to hear. Yes. He was very impressive. I missed the Ramsey show and only saw the 2nd half - Brom had more of the ball until the goal, but every time Colwill had the ball he looked a threat - some beautiful touches and loads of class. Personally, I think he could make a decent PL player. A Brentford / Wolves type player. Too good for the Championship.

I think he's really hampered under Bulut. Although at the same time, over the season he's probably helped him a lot.
Bulut demands him to do more defensively than he's naturally/previously talented at (good in the sense that he's rounding his game more). But I can't help but feel that given how poor we are in an attacking sense, it'd benefit by allowing him a bit more freedom and less responsibility defensively (not entirely, but more focus on the attacking half even in defence).
In the Cardiff side he's one of the few players happy to receive the ball in tighter positions, then has his head up scanning what's around when he gets it. I just feel the defensive demands negate a bit of his potential impact.
That's not to delve into the question of who should manage Cardiff next year. Just that he's progressed a lot this year, overall, but it seems somewhat to the detriment of where he looks like he could really shine.

I can see the argument for stability in theory, but not in practice when that stability is a manager who's preferred style of play is the complete antithesis of the style Colwill's suited to. And I'm not convinced Bulut has started to trust him either. He's playing him because there's no question now that Colwill is by far best option available in that position and Bulut would have to be completely incompetent not to play him, but given half a chance he'll sign some 30+ year old journeyman from Turkey or Greece in the summer to take his position. Bulut is a cowardly manager that sets up every game not to lose, and he'll never truly trust an exciting and expressive attacking player like Colwill because he doesn't fit into his rigid and conservative tactics. The only argument for keeping Bulut in my mind is that it's better the devil you know. I've long since given up any hope that the Cardiff board can make a competent managerial appointment. There's a higher chance of them replacing him with an even more conservative and regressive manager than there is of them hiring a modern and forward-thinking one.

I know you shouldn’t read too much into single performances, but I’m still really disappointed with his performance against Gibraltar. To completely fail to make anything happen against that standard of opposition is concerning. I just don’t feel confident that he’ll manage to capitalise on the very few opportunities he’d get if he moved to a prem club, so I struggle to see him pushing for first team action at that level

Probably style of play. He did well, but still couldn’t get involved in many decisive moments in the final third because Cardiff spend most of their time on the back foot and are more comfortable out of possession. That seems to have been Cardiff’s DNA for a long time and it’s certainly how Bulut prefers to operate, so it doesn’t feel like a good match
