24 man squad. Imagine Bellamy has gone with a smaller squad as he has a lot of ideas he wants to impart Would be excited to see a lineup like this... GK Neco-Rodon-Davies-Beck JJ-Ampadu Brennan-Wilson-DJ Koumas Just picked same team before seeing this Darlow in goal I reckon. If he gets a move maybe, but if he doesn't then Ward & Davies will have had more game time than him this season, Davies having the most so far. Still up in the air I think

Could argue that he may already be well versed in the Bellamy way so would be a good fit.

Colwill over Cooper, and Joe Taylor over Cullen for me, but good overall. Hopefully both with u21s. Colwill not starting for Cardiff and Cooper starting for Swansea may have swung it He's gone with starters it seems within reason, which is why Cullen and Harris are in but Taylor isn't. Refreshing to see.

Surprisingly small squad.
Midfield is still a worry sadly.
Squad aside, I'm more interested to see how we play.

Colwill, Dasilva, Savage, Stevens, Low all miss out. Most of those likely to be with the U21s Very happy with the inclusion of Ollie Cooper, Koumas and Harris
Dasilva, Savage and Stevens should have featured in a 28-man squad in days gone by - but I respect the thinking that it would be easier to train a 24-man squad.
Matt Smith and Dylan Levitt are another two that could have featured, but probaby not make the 23-man cut.

Surprisingly small squad. Midfield is still a worry sadly. Squad aside, I'm more interested to see how we play. I wonder if Bellamy is seeing Ramsey as a deeper midfielder who can help with build up? Obviously it's been tried many times and hasn't worked. However, maybe Bellamy thinks he can get disciplined performances out of him in that role. Don't think he's got the legs to be a forward in Bellamy's system nowadays

So Bellamy names Ramsey as captain but stresses that there will be a leadership group comprised of a number of captains.
So does this possibly mean overall captain but not necessarily a starter?

Seen the point made that the U21s only have 1 game in this window, it's likely that the likes of Colwill, Savage, Crewe, Low, Harris etc.. will be involved in training with the seniors
So whilst it seems that it's a smaller squad, in practise it probably isn't. Those young players will also get some exposure to Bellamy's ideas
It's more a case of recognising that they are unlikely to get on the pitch anyway, so will benefit from playing with the U21s

GK Rodon-Davies-Beck Neco-Ampadu Wilson-Ramsey-DJ Brennan-Koumas The shape will undoubtedly be different when we're in possession and when we're out of possession

Like the look of the squad overall. Don't agree with every decision, which is entirely natural obviously.
I think Beck has a lot of potential, but I don't think he's had much (if any) gametime with Liverpool in preseason and he's currently bedding in at Blackburn having only joined yesterday, so I'm not sure if this is the best time to bring him in - I probably would have left him with the u21s until October.
I personally don't think Cooper and Cullen are good enough. Cooper fits the profile given his high work-rate and effective press so it sort of makes sense, but I just don't think he offers enough. Cullen just doesn't offer anywhere near enough for me.
Much as I like him as a player, I think it's the right call to leave Colwill with the u21s for now. Although he's definitely shown signs of improvement in his all-round game over the last 12 month, it always feels like he's on the cusp of a breakthrough season / period but never quite gets there. He's not contributing enough in the final third at the moment imo, and I'm still very annoyed with his performance against Gibraltar. I personally want to wait until he starts getting some goals / assists before he gets another call up.
Great to see Koumas in the squad and agree with the recalls for Mark Harris and Sorba Thomas.
As an aside, I wonder whether the fact we've only gone for three out and out CBs (although accept that Ampadu and Davies can play there) basically confirms that we're going with a back 4.

This was the quote: "I like a leadership group, I like a number of captains, I like a group. I like a lot of senior players who have a lot of input and I like to be able to communicate with them as well" Where are all of those people who were up in arms when Page spoke about having a committee of senior players that he discussed his decisions with? I bet they're furious! Still makes me laugh that people twisted that or somehow genuinely believed that it was a sign of Page being too loyal / matey with certain individuals, when it's just standard good practice in football management.

Don't think he's got the legs to be a forward in Bellamy's system nowadays It was tried successfully in his time at Nice where he was played in a quarterback type role and did it really well, but crucially had a young midfielder each side of him who did all the running. We have Jordan James to do it, but it isn't Ampadu's game who obviously prefers to sit back too. If we do get another player come through suited to that role (someone like Joel Colwill perhaps) then I could see it working, with Ampadu dropping back to partner Rodon.

Always remember Ray Wilkins very much fulfilling that role for QPR in the early 90s and it was a joy to watch. You'd think Ramsey would have enough nous and experience to adapt his game given the right support. As for the other willing runner, could Neco fill that role at present?

You don't need to be captain to be a major influence on the squad on and off the pitch - which I'm sure Ramsey is. He is a Wales legend but needs to be used more sparingly now - especially in the Nations League as that is a good opportunity to plan for the future/ experiment before qualifiers The nations league are effectively qualifiers, though. I hope we don't treat this campaign as a bunch of friendlies. Grab the campaign by the bollocks...try and win the group and get ourselves a play off spot. It gives us a free hit at Qualifiers next year then. I really like the Nations League so didn't mean to sound dismissive of it. They're much better than friendlies and I like the squash ladder kind of approach but it is,I think, an opportunity to try things out that you might not risk in a qualifier. Still pick a strong team and try to win but it's not the be all and end all.

Win the group and we've got a good chance of a playoff spot for the World Cup, before we've even played a single qualifier. I think we've realised how invaluable that is now. I agree that you might lean towards a bit more experimental in these games over a genuine qualifier but I hope we take them as seriously as possible. Having the unseeded playoff secured for 2022 definitely took the pressure off in the games against Belarus and Belgium which allowed us to go on and secure our place in the seeded pot.

Bellamy is liked more by that type of person for being "no nonsense" so they will use mental gymnastics to say they don't mind it now. In reality it's just good practise that was used as a stick to beat Page with

Ramsey was more prominent but dreadful in possession and hopelessly slow. I suppose Cullen got a goal, so did what strikers are supposed to do, but his overall play is well below international standard. Cabango will never be quick enough and some of his distribtion was dire on the weekend. The only Welsh player on display who looked like he might make be good enough to be included in a Welsh squad was Colwill - and yet he is the only one to miss out (leaving Joe Allen to one side as he is officially retired from international football). Obviously, the squad was picked before Sunday's game, but I am left scratching my head at some of Bellamy's selections.

This for me too we are a player light in CM But it all comes down to how we set up, tempo and a clear style and I am hoping we get to see that from the outset looking forward to it even though Turkey are a good team and going to be a tough start but if we get a good performance and result then it sets us up to kick on

It’s never a good idea to read too much into a single game, particularly a derby and one of the first games of the season. That said, I’ve seen enough from Cooper and Cullen to form an opinion and the’ve never shown they’re good enough imo. Cabango is a limited player, but will be a decent squad option for a good few years. I don’t think Ramsey’s finished at all. He’s shown throughout his career that he can go through dodgy spells where he’s a bit all over the place, but when he finds his rhythm things just click. He’s shown moments of magic in the first few games, but not great overall. Most people put that down to his age - ‘legs gone’ - but I just think it’s been a feature through his career. If he can keep himself fit for another few games, I’m confident he’ll come good.

If all 16 league A teams qualify directly then our chances look quite good. It might be tougher than 2022 though as the teams in league A do look weaker, I'd be surprised if all of them qualified.
