Any one still out there, either Qatar or the UAE
We had booked to leave this evening but had a Plan B to stay on if we got to the last 16.
We are staying in Abu Dhabi but as we’re having a great time we’ve pressed the Plan B button and coming back on Sunday. The weather looks sh1t back home so we thought bollux to it and let’s tie a few more days on …..looks like the grandchildren will only be some FIFA souvenir fridge magnets for Christmas though

I was at the intercontinental and it was a great day. No problems getting a drink and the curry was great. I don't know where all the negativity is coming from. It's probably from people like me who couldn't get in. Paid £110 for the premium package but, as the hive and curry house were full, we had to stay in the French restaurant where there was no draught beer. So we paid £110 for five bottles of heineken. Tbh, have been ripped off before and since so have relaxed since then but it wasnt the best introduction to qatar. I also thought it was very poor value. I paid over £100 for 2 packages in one of the hotel function rooms, one was an alcohol package which consisted of 5 bottles of Heineken and a meal (2 tiny mini burgers and wedges in a small box) and the second was a non alcohol package which was 5 x tins of Pepsi and said box of wedges.

Was always a failsafe option. Either, (a) Wales get out of group and I'm on hand to shuttle into Doha, or (b) Wales eliminated and I get some winter sun and relaxation with the missus. Would obviously have preferred option (a) but option (b) is a nice consolation prize which is helping to temper the pain of our early exit.

I thought £80 was ok value for 5 pints and a decent meal tbh, we knew it was an expensive country. That said, we actually ended up getting 8 pints as the staff weren't the most alert shall we say....

Have had quite a few meals in the Souq Service and menu choices slightly shambolic, but with an atmosphere, lots of fans from other countries interacting, paid around £10-£15 a head for a huge meat curry, bread rice and soft drink. Just make an effort and eat where the locals eat, forget fancy hotels or rip off fan zones. the difference in prices between the souq and the temporary stalls in the square behind the TV studios was eye watering. The service, or lack of it, was hilarious.

Football aside, we had a great trip.
Doha exceeded all expectations for me - ok I'm aware of the controversies surrounding it but it has been brilliant. I doubt there will be another world cup like it with all the fans in one place. That Souk is crazy! Despite the shit in the press, I thought the Fanzones were good especially the one with the FIFA museum.
Held our nerve on accommodation and ended up lucky with a really decent apartment in a good area. (Admittedly it was only made affordable by the fact a few of us teamed up and shared).
Metro was brilliantly efficient. And you were never left in any doubt where the stops were after games and around the attractions.
Food was cheap if you went local. Found some absolutely brilliant curry places. Wasn't particularly expensive in some hotel bars.
We found a few good drinking establishments early on where they were relatively cheap but you could see the prices rise in some places as the tournament is going on.
The workers everywhere have been amazing and friendly. Let's just hope they're being treated fairly as my god they deserve it.
Would have loved a few more days there for the knockouts, but hey ho - it wasn't to be.
On to the qualifiers!

Got to mention mobile phone charges.
As soon as we landed in Doha we took up the offer of a free Ooredoo SIM card and deal. 2022 minutes 2022 texts 2022 mb of data. All valid for 3 days. AND FREE!
On day 3 we received a text offering a recharge. After scrolling through their offers I plumped for unlimited mins/texts and 8GB of data all for the princely sum of £13.50
All in all fantastic value.

.... Ten months later ... Qatar Accommodation Agency, official digs in Qatar, finally email me to respond to my polite nudge in March ... and thanked me for my patience and refunded the promised 80% value for three nights of unused accommodation - £155 ;-)
Pleasant surprise!

You can only imagine the combined interest this thieving organisation has sat on for all this time. I curse the fact that this was our only World Cup.
