Just on the subject of these battery/power packs, I was watching a video on YouTube earlier showing to how use the app at the stadium etc. and it said your battery needs to be at 100%. They said the same thing for the Euros last year IIRC. For those who went, was that actually the case? Quite why the battery needs to be full beats me.

I don't mind having to do a test if we don't have to wear masks out there. Really? I'd happily cover my mouth and nose on a bus if it means I can definitely get in to the country... So would I if I had to, but having not had to wear a mask for months now, it'd be a bit of a pain, especially for someone who wears glasses!

I'll be wearing a mask here at home though the next few weeks just to be as cautious as possible!

Just looked at the Bar prices in our hotel. On today's exchange rate £ 8.15 a pint or £ 6.50 in happy hour ( 3 - 8 pm).Choice very limited though and bottles not much cheaper. Could be worse.

So for anybody who is going to Qatar, where are you drinking? I fly in from Australia on the morning of the USA game and it would be great to put some faces to names from this board. Whats your plans boys?

I think it will be difficult to find a bar serving alcohol that will have space due to the amount of fans in a one city with limited options. This isn’t Dublin 🤣
We’re flying in from Dubai around 1pm on the day of the USA game and contacted a lot of bars and hotel restaurants asking to book a table all have been rejected or not responded.
I’f I’ve read correctly the Al Bidda Fan Park doesn’t serve alcohol till 6pm
Our plan is to see see a few of the sights of Doha, then if possible squeeze into a bar / pub by Al Bidda if not take in the AB fan park then head to the ground where I think there’s a mini fan park serving beer
This is one of the reasons we’re not staying in Doha, trying to fight for an overpriced beer and food each day isn’t my idea of fun. I want my All Inclusive beer served to me by the pool whist I’m in my budgie smugglers 🤣

Alcohol will be served near the ground 3 hrs before the game. I'm pretty certain that's where all our fans will be.
Before that there's the GÔL! prematch party from 11am at the Intercontinental Hotel

Staying on the MSC World Europa so on the day of the Wales vs USA game I'm planning to walk from the cruise terminal along the Corniche to see the sights and soak up atmosphere and end up at the intercontinental Hotel to meet welsh fans for around 3pm just before the England vs Iran game. Didn't buy tickets as I didn't want to be drinking from 11am when kickoff for our game is 11 hours later 😅 if it's full then will probably head to the FIFA fan park and then get to the stadium area nice and early where a beer or two can be had.
Going to be a different experience where it will be more about chance encounters than making plans I think. I do want to meet up with some regular friends out there but will have to just make last minute plans when there I feel.

Bit niche this but may help someone re travel money
HSBC have just launched their global money account service in the UK.
I've signed up and received my global debit card in 2 days. I understand it works as follows. In your banking app you can top up the account with currencies at decent rates (like +0.5% of actual rate). You can then use the card without fees for spend or withdrawals. QAR is not a currency you can buy but in these cases providing you've loaded the card with enough fund (GBP for example) you can use the card without fees and visa daily rate is used. It's all free (you need a HSBC account) and involves no credit check.
You might want to read the detail yourself but it looks useful as far I understand.

Not quiet entry requirements, but I’ve read some conflicting guidance on dress codes etc in Qatar and was wondering if anyone has direct experience having visited the country. I know things like vests are unacceptable and that the shoulders need to be covered, but I was specifically wondering about what’s acceptable in terms of shorts, I‘ve read that they need to be below the knee for men and women. It’s going to be hot out there and I rather not have to wear trousers.

I'm going on the basis of, as it's the world cup and thousands of tourists will be there, shorts will be fine when you're out and about at stadiums and fan parks. If I decide I want to go and have a meal or a drink in a traditional restaurant or cafe then I'll probably opt for trousers.

I know from people who have worked there that standard shorts and tshirts are fine. Going in places with vests is unusual because of the aircon but acceptable out and about. They have well used beaches in Doha so I dont think there's anything to worry about there.

Shorts just above the knee are fine, for men at least. listened to an england fans podcast the other day with an expat who is based there. Dress code will be observed more formally in government buildings, museums and some up marked hotels. But everywhere else will be fine.

I don’t think they’re really going to care to be honest. If you get the chance to speak to someone who’s already been to Qatar or lives there, all of the doom and gloom seems to be overstated.
This is Qatar’s chance to shine on the world stage, they’re not gong to be measuring short length.

Exactly. All the scare mongering is coming from people who have never been to that part of the world before, those that have say its going to be fine. I can't wait now!

Have a look at some of the photos or videos that the bars out there put on their Facebook pages, gives you an idea. Hopefully shorts will be accepted for men, my only concern is the number of people out there. So on that basis will there be any booking involved prior to entry ?

Thanks for this. Handy that it's delivered to your address - no faffing around in the airport trying to collect it.

So how does this work then and does it allow you to still keep existing number? Also as we are there for 10 days we would have to renew every 3 probably use the email version

You take your SIM card out, keep it safe, get on the plane, land in Doha, put this one in. Use messaging apps etc to text and call home etc (others can only contact you this way too, you do have a +974 local mobile number if needed), after three days pay to extended it for 3/7/30 days as required (no contract or Local address required). When you leave take it out and throw away. Pop your SIM back in on 19th Dec when you get home. Some phones allow dual Sims or esim. Some uk contracts you may get a cheap rate (not free) to use Doha

Just had this message back from the Shamrock Tavern in Doha :
Due to the potentially high numbers of fans, we are only accepting pre bookings during the World Cup. We are asking for 200 QR pre payment to reserve you a table with view of our TV’s. This covers the cost of 4 pints of draught beers, or 4 house spirits with a mixer, or a bucket of 5 bottle beers, or a bottle of wine. If this of interest to you, please let us know what games/ time you would like to reserve and we will confirm availability.
Football shirts, shorts are fine. Not vests or flip flops ( no beachwear). Over 21 only

For the hardy Wales away crowd familiar with the marshrutka shared-taxi. The Qatari / UAE equivalent is known as "TAXI SAME-SAME". Just flag any taxi down and ask - often they will be happy to take you for a 1/4 fare.
You'd be unlikely to find an arab using them (or knowing anything at all about them) - but ask any Indian/Nepali foreign worker and they will set you straight
