In case the match is again in Osijek as suggested...
I did a little research and the BUDAPEST-PECS-OSIJEK train is still up and running. Depart daily BUD at 09:53 arriving Osijek five hours later at 14:54. Returning, there are two diaily connectons. Dept Osijek at 06:24 arrive BUD 12:05 Dept Osijek at 13:20 arrive BUD 20:05!
Costs €26 on their website Back in 2019 it was only 25 Kuna / £3 at the station between Osijek and Pécs !
Note that there are now DAILY connecting trains! It was only workdays: Monday to Friday back in 2019.
From Pécs there are at least 9 express trains daily to Budapest Kelenföld and Deli stations - taking only 3 hours / 4300 fl / £12.
One Winter departure daily from BUDAPEST to ZAGREB at 15:35. Takes either 5 1/2 hours (if you transfer at Koprivnica - FIVE MINUTES TRANSFER!) arriving Zagreb at 21:03
Takes just over six hours if you stay on the direct train and then you arrive at 21:52 Coming back from ZAG at 16:35 arrive BUD at 22:04
Cost €18 from BUD or €15 from ZAG
BELGRADE TO OSIJAK VIA NOVI SAD
CAN BE DONE BY TRAIN First, train to Novi Sad. Then the 10:00 Novi Sad to Bogojevo (11:26) wait 90 minutes until 13:59 for the short ride train to ERDUT (14:30) to Osijek, arriving at 15:46 - when I did it in 2017 they only accepted CASH 23 Kuna on that last leg (£3)! Novi Sad to Erdut costs 434 RSD (£3.20) so the whole trip is around £6.
THIS IS the latest 2021-22 post CV-19 updated timetable. Novi Sad station ARE ABLE to sell the through ticket up to ERDUT (but she needed to get permission to do that).
If you do this and get off at Bogojevo, there is a lovely lake if you carry on walking for about 15 minutes towards the Croatian border. There are actually a couple of great fish restaurants there (or at least they were open and crowded in the Summer!). Still, worth the hike!
The place to stay in Belgrade it Hotel Slavija - the best breakfast on the planet ;-)))
The bus from Novi Sad to Osijek takes 3 hours and departs daily at 12 noon for €10 - posibly a few more departures?
Loads of departures, about twice hourly between ZAG and OSIJEK 5 to 6 hours with some needing one change - €15-€17 (Youth/Student/Pensioners get 50% off!)
Appears to be only one departure a day to SPLIT Dept ZAG at 15:20 arrive Split at 21:30 for €15 - which is almost as fast as the bus! Dept Split at 08:31 arrive ZAG 14:54
Only two realistic train connections between ZAG and PULA taking a litle short of NINE HOURS for a mere €9. Flixbus takes 4 to 5 hours for €30...

Think I might have to sack this one off unless more appealing options appear soon.
£400 for direct flights is more than I paid to get to the middle east for the World Cup! Madness for a 2 night trip.

Reasonable flights to and from Dubrovnik available over the weekend in question (check out Skyscanner), if you fancy a trip up and down the coastline to/from Split. Could be quite pleasant!

Dubrovnik is definitely worth a visit. There are fairly frequent buses between there and Split. Takes a few hours but they are modern coaches with air-con, etc.

Involves staying until Tuesday but there’s a £25 flight coming back from Split to Gatwick

That's a good deal, especially if you can also find a one-way ticket to Split to get out there in the first place, by whatever route(s). Accommodation prices in Croatia are pretty reasonable, even for a 3-4 nights stay.
The downside is that you'd miss our home game against Latvia on the Tuesday night.

This is worth noting:-
As of 01 January 2023, the currency of Croatia is the euro. Croatian kuna will still be accepted until 15 January, but can be exchanged for euros at Croatian banks until the end of 2023.

For my experience of living through the change in Belgium back in 1999 ... there will be plenty of head-scratching and confused looks ;-(
