Can we have the option the best person for the job regardless of nationality, who has decent and relevant experience! No more learning on the job please and lets please have meritocracy in terms of who we select PS - no Roy Keane please as he failed as a manager and it just would never work! Some of the younger learning on the job ones have been ok. In fact, they all have. Hughes, Speed & Giggs.

Saw Davide Ancelotti mentioned, did his Pro-Licence via FAW. Interesting long-shot perhaps!? I think Bellamy has matured enough to manage people on and off the pitch and I'd love to see him get a crack at the job. He crossed my mind too.

Eric Ramsey is a possibility worth exploring.

Osian would be more that just a manager. I'd get him in and try to get a respected ex-player in as assistant.
Bellamy would also be a fine choice but I feel it's Osian's time. He's proven himself now.

The worrying thing about that article by Chris Wathan is that anybody at the FAW thought that we would have a realistic chance of attracting either Cooper or Edwards. There is no way we could come close offering an acceptable package. I have very little trust in those making the decision. I hope Dave Adams has some say in the matter. He could be the adult in the room.

I highly doubt that's the profile of manager we would go for and, even if we were looking to, thankfully we probably wouldn't be able to afford someone like him.

You're probably right, but given the previous links with Keane can we really trust Mooney to make sensible decisions? If they were seriously thinking that Cooper or Edwards would join us, as implied by Wathan, then it shows really poor judgement. I really don't trust the FAW to make a sensible decision based primarily on footballing considerations.

Qualified for their first World Cup in 12 years, won the group stage and reached the quarter final in 2018. Again qualified for Euro 2020 and topped the group, knocked out in round of 16. Didn’t end well, not qualifying for 2022 WC. I think he’s quite organised and tactical, puts a lot of rules in place and doesn’t give his teams much freedom so could be frustrating for some players and similar to Page but possibly a bit more tactically aware. I mean Page qualified us for our first World Cup in decades. First one to qualify for two straight finals. We got out of the group in the Euros. I had a quick Google and he relegated Sweden to group C in the Nations League. We weren't happy with Page, but if he relegated us to group C he would have been dragged out of the CCS. Giggs took charge and had an influence in large parts for Euro 2020, and the bloke who’s arteta’s assistant now. Sweden got to the quarter final of the WC, where as we were a disaster and not prepared at all when we got there. He’s done quite well at club level in the past too, something we can’t say about Page. I just think he’s someone within the FAW’s budget and would make the team organised and hard to beat. I believe the Irish FA have had a look at him too. He’d be a less risky appointment than someone like Bellamy or Osian Roberts IMO. But I wouldn’t be gutted with either of them

I'm sure this will come back to bite me, but I feel weirdly optimistic that they'll make a good call on this. I look to the two recent appointments for the women's team made under Mooney (pretty sure Grainger was during Mooney's time) and I think they were both very shrewd appointments that us fans were not expecting. I have a feeling that they'll look beyond the usual suspects and go for an unheralded coach with decent pedigree, who will hopefully be tactically very astute and can get the best out of the squad

You have to remember Osh was never a number 2 with Wales. Gary inherited him and brought in Raymond, same with Cookie as he brought in Kit, so he was only ever a number 3 and the fans that think he was pivotal at Euro 2016 need to read the room.
The players didn’t warm to him, so Osh is a massive risk at a time we need a proven manager and have time to do a proper recruitment process.
The problem is the FAW are skint, non qualification has led to budget cuts already, paying off Page would have cost over 1/4 million… so the likes of Cooper and Edwards would have wanted £1m plus … we could barely afford half of that.
So Osh maybe favourite but it will be down to what we can afford not what we want, as after 2 years of wasting money they are now eating into the reserves for the first time ever.

Ireland have been a decent footballing country, but they're so off it at the moment they might look at this guy, maybe even Page has a chance with Ireland. If we appointed him I'd be completely underwhelmed and seriously questioning why. It'd seem to me like sacking Allardyce and bringing in Dyche to replace him. Both had a spell of decent results in international football but for the last few years have completely failed. Bellamy would be young with new ideas, Roberts would be the football godfather coming in to lead it. Hiring someone else's failure though... we had one of them already.

This smacks of a lazy signing based on his name alone. He comes across as a nice person but does he really have the acumen to be a manager? I could be doing him a disservice after all we had no idea how Giggs would fare. However it just seems to be a complete throw of the dice based more on marketing considerations than footballing ones.
His record with Monaco was W4 D5 L11. He had a more successful stint with Montreal Impact albeit for a short time.
I suppose if France were to do well under his leadership in the Olympics then he might then have enough of a track record to be worthy of consideration. Would we wait that long? Would he be interested anyway?

Also got them promoted to league A I believe, on balance over the years it’s a successful and impressive managerial CV, but you’re purely focused on his latter stage with Sweden, fair enough! Not many managers have success all the way through. Personally would see him as a class appointment but I get your point

Osian with Edwards to eventually succeed him would be my dream. Osian can organise and sort us out, provide a solid foundation and Edwards could well improve by the end of Roberts' tenure to be able to take us on and grow working with the limited resources that we have. I'm talking pie in the sky right now but one can dream.

Talk of Cooper or Edwards are not realistic in the least.
Unfortunately, we need to realistically rule out anyone who has a chance of getting a job in the Premier League and (at least) the top half of the championship.
Don’t forget that Coleman, our most successful manager, left us for a team bottom of the championship who were heading for League 1.

Would Thierry Henry be such a bad choice? I’m sure he’d bring in some class acts with the coaching team. On what basis would you give Henry the job? Just because of the excellence of his playing career? There's virtually no correlation between succeeding as a player and succeeding as a manager. To be fair things worked out Okish with Giggs and could also work with Henry. But his record at Monaco was very poor. To be fair he did better in Montreal, but for a short spell in the MLS, which isn't much to boast about. There is also the inside knowledge from when he did his FAW badges. We should only employ a manager on the basis of their coaching and tactical capability. Nothing else. Players will be impressed with big names only up to the point they first open their mouths.

What makes you say that the players didn't warm to Osian? I don't think that I've ever read anything along those lines before. (although I do remember him doing an interview whilst at Palace saying along the lines of 'managers need to maintain distance from players'). Agree with the FAW being skirt and the absolute maximum that they could afford to pay is half a mill a year. I would imagine that if Osian were paid that, it would be below their market rate.

Welsh men's managers of recent times have fallen into one of the following groups: first chances for young managers (ex-players), second chances for young managers who didn't get off to the best start or older managers at end of their career.
I would suggest Henry currently falls into that second group.

He's proven himself now. I think you are right. My gut feeling is we’ll go around the mountains looking for a manager and then it will come down to an interview in a crumby hotel in Birmingham so FAW councillors from North and South can save money on petrol and Osian will get the vote.

This sounds like misogynistic rubbish I'm afraid, why does Women's football have so many male managers? They must've adapted, so it's perfectly possible for a woman to too. God you can't really be this dense. The physical abilities of men vs women leads to different tactics being applicable and viable in each version of the sport. There's a reason there isn't a bunch of crossover in the managers department. Isn’t that the exact point iwlos is making? There is a big crossover, but it’s one-way: men managing women. If those men can adapt, why can’t the women? It’s either me being ‘dense’ and misunderstanding, or you being ‘dense’ and not reading the posts properly (or not fully comprehending what was written)
