A great player no doubt but did not like his attitude towards referees. Fair enough. But I see that kind of will to win (evidenced by stacks of trophies) as being essential in any sport. I don't think that's the reason most people who claim to not like him would give though. Agree 100%. I am a former member of the Referee Fraternity so declare that interest

Quite good article. Take issue with a couple of things though. 1) at 5'11" he's taller than Puyol or Cannavaro, two of the best centre backs of the past 15 years or so. Saying he lacks the height to play that position is typical backwards British/English thinking. 2) claimimg Luke Shaw is better attacking wise just because he puts in more crosses seems a bit of a stretch. Davies got more goals/assists last season. www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2014/jul/24/ben-davies-tottenham-swansea-defender

To be fair neither of those players you mentioned played in the Premier league which is far more more physical and height is a bigger asset. I have been saying for a long time Ben Davies will play CL football in his career and this is another step close, great player.

I remember reading somewhere that Davies is very susceptible to runs in behind. With spurs' high line and Davies' lack of pace it'll be interesting to see if he can overcome this weakness. Only last night against Toronto he got caught out but got lucky with the player being offside. I think Pochettino is a good manager to help him improve on these kind of deficiencies. Not sure Gary Monk is in a position to teach players about how to defend

There was a stat that Ben Davies was beaten by his opposite man more times than any other left back last season.
Shows how taking a single stat can often not tell the whole story (ie defending is actually one of Davies' strengths)

Whatever else you think about the move, you've got to be happy about it from a national side point of view. It's win-win: Davies doesnt just go to a bigger club and potentially higher level of football, but Taylor gets to resume his premiership career too.

I fear for his premier league starting prospects. Rose has been impressive apparently and he's certainly more of a Pochettino full back than Davies is.

BBC Sport running a story linking Dawson with a move to Hull. Might Pochettino see Davies more as a centre back?

Maybe, either way Davies will have to work very hard to further improve and get a place in the starting 11

He'll play in the Europa league at least. Which, from a Welsh point of view, is good news I think. I mean, he now has experience of playing in Cyprus for example.

Is Luke Shaw a better player than Ben Davies? Not especially bothered, but it's an interesting thought. Spurs buying him is highly interesting on the basis that they buy players with a view to selling them for massive profits. Bodes well for us. If they play him.

Just wondering if Davies had a full pre season / is carrying a knock?

Managed to catch the last 25 minutes of Spurs v Besiktas last night.
Davies looked very good in defence and marauding forward on numerous occasions at the right time but just needs to improve on his final ball. Would be a definite starter at 3 for me.

Any idea why Ben Davies didn't come on against Cyprus? We needed all our quality defensive players on the field once King got sent off.

Probably invite more pressure by bringing on a defender rather than a midfielder, considering we only had 10 men in the second half. I think Coleman did the right thing personally.

I called the Edwards for Williams substitution immediately after the red card and for the reasons richierich333 says. We needed more control in midfield to cut off the supply. Incidentally if I have a criticism of Coleman the otehr night it wa staking too long to get Edwards on.

Ledley was our only recognised midfielder on the pitch.

I'm not a fan of subbing on defenders for midfielders/attackers when holding on to such a small lead, even for the last 10 minutes, especially in this scenario (if they scored it would have been vital for us to get a winner and we'd have had one less forward player to get it)
If you mean Davies for Taylor I think that's a useless substitution.

Davies should take corners for Wales

I was shocked to see him take set pieces because 95% of the time it feels like he never gets it past the first man on crosses. The couple of set-pieces I saw him take tonight it was much of the same. He shouldn't take corners.

Disagree, I think he takes good corner kicks, from what I've seen in the other games
Although it's probably sometimes better to play it short and keep possession than kicking it into the box...

Ben Davies not even in the Spurs squad again while they continue to be awful and leak goals - they are losing 2-0 to Stoke at home!
There is no way Ben is this awful. He should get away from there ASAP. Danny Rose is no defender and never will be. If Spurs were in the top 4 and flying then fine. They are not and I have never seen a situation where a club buys a player for 10mn+ and does not even put him in the squad, even if they were going through a challenging time. He is young and what is that supposed to do to a young player's confidence? Everytime I have seen Ben playing in the Europa Cup, etc, in a winning team I may add, he is looking solid. What the hell is going on? I can only assume the manager did not want him in the first place or is incompetent!

Watched the europa match on thursday for the sole reason to watch Ben.
To be honest i was impressed with Davies he didn't do a lot wrong and his willingness to go forward was lost on this fellow players especially overrated Townsend . He saved a certain goal when he very discretely blocked off an opponent who would have had a clear header on goal.
Get out of there Ben ASAP you can do better than there!
Spurs have never recovered from loosing a certain GB!!!!

The only positive thing is that Pochettino does not seem to like Belgians either. I have no idea how Spurs can afford to have players like Vertonghen and Dembele warming the bench. I have hardly watched Spurs in Premier league this year given the absence of Welshmen, but do not believe these two have also become poor over night.

Good point raised in Podcast Peldroed, Pochettino signed Davies (assuming it wasn't the board) yet he plays Danny Rose who most Spurs fans think is garbage.
