Or you could just stand up for yourselves and not be so precious? As for the board dying, I thought there were more new members posting more often (even if it was about a Welsh cricket team ) iv'e never seen you start a thread that was ridiculed, try it though its annoying

We don't want another Collison-esque saga over this lad's future. Get him in the squad v Switzerland, give him 30 seconds at the end. Boom, future sorted, minimal risk. If he turns out to be mediocre, we've lost nothing, but if he becomes a world-beater and defects to England, we'll be absolutely kicking ourselves.

He's been with them since he was 8 hasn't he? So I hope they get some cash for him and that he plays for Welsh. Hopefully he'll have been called a sheep shagger by the racist inglish his whole life and has his heart set on playing for the greater fatherland.

Greater Fatherland sounds a bit like Nazi Germany. How about Land of His Fathers? Actually that belief stems from English anti-Nazi propaganda from WW2. Don't let them divide us, it's only a short step to conquest after that. In fact many countries refer to their homeland as their fatherland. I stand by my initial comment of "Greater Fatherland" when referring to Wales.

I couldn't give a hoot about the English (or Welsh) cricket teams (hence the rolly eye face) and that's not the point here. The point here is the accusation that the board is dying...which is bollocks I reckon...because people might get offended by a few sarcastic comments.

Post by stu on Sept 16, 2011 11:52:52 GMT
No the two comments are completely unrelated. The English took the term vaterland which means fatherland or homeland and used it in their propaganda. The term fatherland should not be allowed to be twisted into a bad context. The list of countries that use that term is huge, just because the English don't use it doesn't mean we shouldn't. If anything it should make us want to use it more. So this Joniesta then...

Rest is rubbish. The anti-Nazi propaganda was not 'English', it was found widely throughout all countries in the allied coalition and France. And rightly so, because the Nazis were doing the same about us (when they weren't producing anti-semitic propaganda that is).

The point here is the accusation that the board is dying...which is bollocks I reckon...because people might get offended by a few sarcastic comments. Well since I didn't start that thread then I don't see why you were implying otherwise. And for someone that doesn't care about it you were quite vocal in your pro English cricket posts. Actually that belief stems from English anti-Nazi propaganda from WW2. Don't let them divide us, it's only a short step to conquest after that. In fact many countries refer to their homeland as their fatherland.I stand by my initial comment of "Greater Fatherland" when referring to Wales. Bolded bit is the only bit I agree with. And rightly so, because the Nazis were doing the same about us (when they weren't producing anti-semitic propaganda that is). Bolding doesn't work in quotes but I can guess what you are referring to. The reason I mentioned the English is because as a direct translation vaterland (homeland) was translated to fatherland, hence the negative connotations and links with the nazis. I'm sure that had the English had a history of referring to England as their fatherland (as many countries do, including us) then they wouldn't have made such a fuss about it. The comparisons are there if you want to see them, or not in my case. I don't care about the world wars as they happened a long time before I was born and I'd much rather my children be taught history from a Welsh perspective in school rather than the anglo centric bullshit that was forced upon me. I just hope Joniesta plays for the greater fatherland.

Does the lad himself get any say in who he plays for?! Instead of fast tracking him into squads at a ridiculous age why dont we wait and see who he chooses. If he chooses England because he feels English then fair enough.
He should have the choice at the end of the day rather than be coerced into making a decision using an early first team cap as bait.

Maybe its not an 'early first team cap as bait' though? Maybe he deserves to be in the squad on merit? I think so. They've just put one of the championships top teams out the league cup tonight and it was Wigan in the last round. Virtually every time he plays for Palace they win and he makes a telling contribution. In the not too distant past a player that good would have had 10 Welsh caps by now!! Remember the likes of Paul Evans and Marcus Browning getting called up?!
Who needs Rhys Williams when we've got Johnny Williams?

We are getting ourselves all worked up again (as usual) over a 17 year old when we dont even know who he wants to play for.

Still think we should be approaching him now, if we haven't already. Make it known we're interested. I'm sure Flynn has alerted Speed to his ability.
He would be silly to declare for England, their players are built up and then vilified by their press and unless you are consistently excellent and lucky with injuries it is hard to stay in their squad. With Wales although the chances of playing at a finals are much lower it will probably be better for his career and much less stressful.
Of course, as storm says, what matters is where his feelings lie. If he feels 100% English and not one bit Welsh, then he should play for England. But if he has some national feeling for us he should commit to us. It will be much better for him, in my view. And if not then why is he playing for our under-21s?

Well, its not a surprise he's pulled out of the U19s now he's part of the first team picture at Palace.
And considering he's played for Welsh youth international teams since he was 14 I very much presume he wants to play for us. It just a question of whether he merits a place in the squad at this point. I say yes.
