In 22 how many players have scored goals in open play for Wales?
Bale, Johnson, J Williams , Norrington Davies And moore (if there’s other please correct me)
Out of those 5 we didn’t start 4 v USA. Obviously Davies was injured but when you realise that you see what j Williams has brought to the table and it’s why I want mullin called up. We need a bit of audacity

Having his best ever season at club level (yeah I know, it's only League 2). I don't think talent is the issue - he's technically better than most of our squad players, and I would say superior to all others in terms of the way he operates in tight spaces. He's just not been productive enough to justify more game time unfortunately. But I still think he has something to offer going forward. I completely disagree with people who lump him in with Gunter and think we should bin him off going forward. I think he has 3-4 years left in him where he can offer us something.

Yeah totally agree, in terms of his ability he’s more like a Spanish or Croatian player, great on the ball. I think possibly he’s lost a bit of pace / power / prem fitness levels …. And that’s what’s holding him back from starting regularly for Wales or a champ team. He had so many unlucky injuries early on in his career, so you never know, maybe after a good season behind him we can see him playing in the Championship again soon. At 28/29 there’s no way he’s finished for Wales imo! Also, I think the timing of his career has been a bit unlucky, so much emphasis on high pressing atm, 10/15 years ago it was a different style of game… he was 19 when he outshone Modric at the Liberty, ran the show that day in CM!

Hibs are after Jonny, but have had a bid rejected:
Shame, that would be a good move for him. Hopefully they come back with a better offer.

2 bids rejected by Swindon from Hibbs.
On future involvement with Wales…
"I will do my best. If that's enough great, if it's not then it's how it's always been through my career - up and down," he said.
"I have always loved being in the squad. I understand I am playing in League Two now so people might see that as a negative, but it's given me a platform to play a load of games so I see it as a positive in that sense.
"Even though I am playing League Two I have been able to score for Wales and make contributions on the international stage."
Deffo still has a part to play for us, especially given our lack of depth in midfield… he’s a proven player on the intl stage, class on the ball, keeps possession, hope Page makes use of him from the bench at least.

Can't see why he'd be dropped? Injuries are the only reason he's playing at that level. He's only 29. Last meaningful outing for us was away to Poland where he played well and scored an excellent goal. Gunter I can see being dropped but not Williams.

People just lazily drop him in with Gunter when talking about the need to 'move on'.

He's playing well in League Two and has proved his worth at int'l level. He scored against Poland away from home last year ffs.
At the same time as dismissing Johnny Williams others want to cap a 28 year old playing a league below.

For me personally it’s irrelevant the Professional level they play at and in what country. It sounds stupid but what matters more is how good they are. If it’s a striker we’re talking about such as Mullin we should ask will he score goals for us in games and help us qualify for Germany or Will he score score about 2 in 30?
We all know J Williams only plays in league 2 due to being the incredibly unlucky with injuries. At championship level or international vs the likes of Armenia or Latvia he’s a great player to bring off the bench with 20 minutes to go when it’s 0-0, he could easily create something and win us the game. I’d rather see him come on in that situation over t Roberts , M Harris or Matondo. After Germany 2024 maybe J Williams is no longer a great option to impact like that and that’s when he goes.

No problem with us calling up Jonny, it just depends on how the squad is looking
For me Mullin is an easier call up due to our dearth of options at centre forward. There might be enough options ahead of Jonny, especially with the emergence of Cooper, for him not to make it. However regular game time is defo counting in his favour

At least Jonny is playing, too many of ours have not been playing and that's a big worry.

I think any criticism of Jonny’s selection in the squad is due to the division he plays in rather than how well he’s doing or what position he plays.
Whenever anyone wants a player called up, Jonny Williams is the first one they want dropped, irrespective of form or position.
‘This defender who’s had a few games in the Championship should be called up, drop Jonny Williams because he plays in League 2’

Announced international retirement Yeah, just saw that on Twitter. I reckon Page has had a conversation with him (and possibly Gunts) about trying new players from now on to freshen the squad up.

This is all becoming very odd now…..
New players coming in doesnt mean having to retire. Always leave the door open for the future incase of dire situations (like now).

Right, now this is weird, very weird, he's 29.
Nobody retires from international football at 29 unless something has gone very wrong behind closed doors or their "missus is a nutter", to quote The GLC.

Weird timings all these players retiring all at once within a couple of weeks of each other. Something must have been said when Page has been selecting players this week.
Particularly Jonny although struggled with injuries, on his day a very handy player and still could be for us in my opinion.

Really gutted, I don't think the scale of change is going to be conducive to having a good dressing room in these next couple of camps. I think having so many new players will be quite disruptive. It is exactly what many people have been calling out for however, particularly in the aftermath of the WC, so I hope they won't be complaining if we do look disjointed in these next few games

I suppose it doesn’t help that he’s the whipping boy every time a squad gets announced and a flavour of the month player isn’t selected.
‘Why has league 2 Jonny Williams been selected instead of <insert player who’s had a run of a dozen decent games in the championship or league 1>?’
Most didn’t even care that Jonny plays in a different position to the player they’re pushing to get into the squad.
EDIT- Mark Harris, you’re on your own

Find it interesting how players like chester, andy king, vokes, ledley, ashley williams etc never actually retired from international duty, but all of a sudden we’re having a mini exodus, with players announcing retirements.
Page specifially said that seniors ‘wont retire all at once’ after WC. So whats going on? Ive heard rumours that Jonny could be in the SPL next year so he’ll be playing better football.
Between these rwtirements and the number of staff leaving the FAW, I’m feeling theres something amiss here.

If Cooper and Colwill both step up it's fine, we won't need him but that's a huge if.

I felt it was wrong at the time for Rob Page to make bullish statements about squad sticking together because it was impossible to know what happens next and because i) they're such a tight group that one retirement makes it a different prospect to continue and ii) most of the squad made it to the World Cup - the ultimate dream - so that the only way up is going deep into Euros again or making a better show at World Cup 2026, and some of these just wrong age to make it to another World Cup.
I want to say thank you to Jonny for all the good times but honestly I just don't understand this one.
He's still of a good age, he's injury free for first time in his career and he's always loved playing for Cymru/Wales as we have loved having him.
Diolch Jonny - you've been special to us and I hope you've loved every moment.

I agree with dai The players said they wouldn’t all retire at once, only last month Jonny was saying he still wants to be involved, a little before that Joe Allen said that same… it’s a shame they’ve changed their minds. If it was a project they loved and felt a big part of then they wouldn’t have retired. I just think it’s a shame that our older players haven’t been valued much since the Giggs/Page era. Anyway, thanks Joniesta for the memories, a real class act!

Gunter especially was the type of player/person who I thought would have always left the door open...but nope. Jonny at only 29, is still young, and is still a better option than many of our youngsters. Strange times.

Don't forget the scenes after Jonny scored his first goal in Bulgaria or how well he did as part of leadership team, of a much changed side, during Poland away. DS making the point on twitter that players are informed who will be involved about 10-14 days before squad announcement which we know is this Tuesday. The cracking video released by FAW suggests this isn't such a surprise either. I guess someone should make the point that squad has been getting younger recently and that the old guard have become a smaller and smaller group. We had already started transition period, at least outside the 90mins, and now opportunity for younger guys to grab the opportunity.

Shame, I enjoyed watching Joniesta play for us. Always a trier and a tricky customer for the opposition. Way things are going with retirements and injuries we could be struggling come the next games.
